Stewart, Al - Constantinople Lyrics

Across the western world
The fights are going down
The gypsy armies of the evening
Have lit their fires across
The nether side of town
They will not pass this way again
So here in the night
Leave your home it's time for running
Out of the light

I see the hosts of Mohammed coming
The Holy Sister bars her doors against the East
Her house has stood too long divided
The uninvited guests are breaking up the feast
She may not bid them leave again
So here in the night
Leave your home it's time for running
Out of the light

I see the hosts of Mohammed coming
I dreamed I stood like this before
And I'm sure the words that I heard then
Were much the same
It's just an old Greek tragedy they're acting here
Held over by popular acclaim
So here in the night
Leave your home it's time for running
Out of the light
I see the hosts of Mohammed coming

  5. H.... S....

A most appropriate song for the times in which we live. The very first sentence in the song says it all.

    H.... S....

    History my friend is repeatable
We must learn from history not to make same mistakes
But humanity never learns, so we make the same mistakes again and again
Constantinople tried to hold west in its time. Fell
Hope west won't fall this time
Ways now are different than 1453 (not exactly war I would say)
    Sign of the times
I don't know if Al would like to compare him as a Greek living this Greek drama, but I think his lyrics ensure that
Greece is a state of mind
    A western state of mind

The 'Across the western world/The lights are going down', is, I think, a reference to WW1 and Gray's comment, for which this song is a parallel, confirmed by the 'I dreamed I stood like this before'.

    F.... G....

I don't think it's a reference to WW1 as it talks about certain fall
The fall of Constantinople in 1453
Byzantium was the frontier of western world that time

    F.... G....

It would seem to me it is a reference to both events melded together poetically .

An overlooked Al Stewart album. I know the big three were a tough act to follow but 24 Carrots was Al experimenting with more rocking sounds like this track and "Paint by Numbers" which sees him go almost hard rock. "Mondo Sinistro" was his New Wave track. "Midnight Rocks" and "Optical Illusion" were his traditional pop standards. Scottish born, English raised, kick ass songwriter/singer!

I play this album for a pre school class there the only ones who get it.

Read Al's whole interview by googling with these words: "Does Al Stewart think we’re too stupid for historical folk rock?

(YouTube doesn't accept links or urls...).

    c.... ....

All I got was an article on Prog and a bunch of completely irrelevant fluff.

Beautiful and emotional comment. Thank you.
I'm a son of a daughter of prosfigas tis Nicomedias. Still in Greece.

Al said: " “I’ve written a song about the fall of Constantinople” and their eyes glaze over.
If I made a movie about the fall of Constantinople and put stupid Brad Pitt in it, it would be a hit".

  18. G.... T....

Reminds me of Orlando in '80. That is where and when I bought this album. But more than some typical pop song, Al does it again. He captures a history far past "what were you doing the first time you heard this." The cat is just a clas act.

    G.... T....

Reminds me of Orlando, June 12th, 2016 and western Europe 2018.
