Stevie Wonder - I Ain't Gonna Stand For It Lyrics

Don't wanna believe what they're telling me
Somebody's been pickin in my cherry tree
Don't wanna mistrust nobody by mistake
But I hear tell someone's been diggin round in my cake

And I ain't gonna stand for it baby
And I ain't gonna stand for it baby
And I ain't gonna stand for it baby
nah-ah (nah-ah)
And I ain't gonna stand for it baby
And I ain't gonna stand for it baby
I ain't gonna stand for it baby
nah-ah (nah-ah nah-ah) nah-ah (nah-ah nah-ah)

Don't wanna believe what somebody said
But somebody said somebody's shoes was under my bed
Don't wanna cause nobody no bodily harm
But somebody's been rubbin' on my good luck charm

And I ain't gonna stand for it baby
And I ain't gonna stand for it baby
I ain't gonna stand for it baby
nah-ah (nah-ah)
And I ain't gonna stand for it baby
And I ain't gonna stand for it baby
I ain't gonna stand for it baby
nah-ah (nah-ah nah-ah) nah-ah (nah-ah nah-ah)

Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh, my, my, my, my, my, my,
Oh, Oh, my, my, my, my, my, my,
Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh, my, my, my, my, my, my,
Oh, Oh, my, my, my, my, my, my,

No, I ain't gonna stand for it baby
And I ain't gonna stand for it baby
And I ain't gonna stand for it baby, nah-ah (nah-ah)
I ain't gonna stand for it baby
And I ain't gonna stand for it baby, no
And I ain't gonna stand for it baby, oh, oh,
no, no, no, no, no (nah-ah)
I ain't gonna stand for it baby
And I ain't gonna stand for it baby
And I ain't gonna stand for it baby, nah-ah (nah-ah) oh, oh, oh
(I ain't gonna stand for it baby,
I ain't gonna stand for it baby,
I ain't gonna stand for it baby)
no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
stand for it baby, nah-ah (nah-ah) baby, ah, ah

@Jhamel Wade Ive always been a Stevie fan. When I was in the USMC (73-77) I wore out Stevie's cassettes. Marines wonder why a white boy from the hills of Charleston, West Virginia played Stevie's music all the time? I told them, my mom and dad taught me to respect all people no matter what color their skin was. Im still a fan of Stevie's music. ✌🇺🇸👍

I love this song. Im a big Stevie fan. Had a lot of albums (cassettes) back in the 70s when I was in the United States Marine Corps 73-77. A lot of Marines could not under why a white boy from the hills of Charleston, West Virginia, loved his music. I told them, I grew up with a lot black kids, and proud of it.

  11. M.... D....

    Feeling you for real Stevie!!

    M.... D....

I love this song. Im a big Stevie fan. When I was in the United States Marine Corps (73-77) I played a lot of Stevie's music in the squad bay. A lot of Marines were confused, and asked why a white boy from the hills of Charleston West Virginia played Stevie's music so much? I told them my mom and dad taught me to respect all people, no matter what color their skin was. Again I have always loved Stevie's music ♥️✌

This was my favorite Stevie song when I was a kid!!

    p.... ....

Im older...64 yrs old. Ive always loved Stevie's music. When I was in the United States Marine Corps 73-77. I played Stevie's music all the time on my cassette tape player in the Squad Bay (barracks). Marines would ask me me, "Why does a white kid from the Hills of Charleston West Virginia play Stevie's music all the time" "I told them I was raised to respect all Men no matter what color they were and Stevie is one of my favorite singers". This song played in 1980, I still love it, and is one of favorite songs from Stevie. ✌

    Why all the dislikes..

  40. D.... M....

Steve's last fully genius album. He made more great tunes, but this was the last every cut is bad vinyl.

  41. E.... W....

It's not full-on George Jones or anything, but I do remember an interview at the time where Stevie said he really dug Ronnie Milsap. You can hear that pretty clearly here...
(And, hey, if Ray Charles could master country music, why not Stevie Wonder?:))

    E.... W....

Ronnie Milsap, coincidentally, is also blind and a hell of a talent.

  42. T.... N....

Fell in love with this song from the moment I first heard it way back when we used to tune in to Radio Five beaming from South Africa.

  43. E.... W....

Leave it to Stevie to start a new genre: funk-a-billy. Love this song, with him channelling some Lionel Richie style twang.

    E.... W....

    Funk a Billy 🤣🤣🤣👍🏾

  44. P.... ....

It's 2018... Let her ass go.

  45. r.... ....

I've always thought that this song has a quick ending. As if the song was incomplete. When I bought the album I had to look up information about this song because I thought the CD was defective.

I honestly can't hear any Country in this except for the tiny bit of slide guitar which I didn't notice till I was looking for it.

    l.... ....

lewisner but at the beginning of the song, his singing style even has a little country twang to it.

    l.... ....

    lewisner https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Ain%27t_Gonna_Stand_for_It

    l.... ....

lewisner I agree. A lot of Soul stations would NOT play it because it sounded county. SHAME ON THEM

    l.... ....

    l.... ....

    R.... W....

Renny Wilson, try listening to Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and the like. Those recordings may change your mind.

    R.... W....

    Lmao stop lying 😂😂 😂

  80. T.... M....

Great song, reminds me of being in the Air Force in 1981. However, this particular Stevie Wonder song got very little airplay during that time to NO airplay today. And I have a theory on this subject. It had a country edge to it which is why black radio stations across the country didn't touch it. And if that were true, then shame on those black radio stations for being BIGOTS!!!!
It seems black radio stations have not given other black artists any airplay nowadays like:
    The Pointer Sisters
    Lionel Richie
    Kool and the Gang
    Lou Rawls
    etc
Why, you ask? It's because those recording artist have crossed over and heard on white oriented radio stations. Which is smart on their part, because they have now achieved greater fame and fortune. What better way to market yourself than not limiting yourself to only black radio stations.
As a black person I am ashamed of those radio stations that holds those views.
Have a nice day. And a blessed one.
    :-)

    T.... M....

your theory is wrong and makes no sense.
    this was a HUGE hit.
the reason it didn't get more airplay was because there were several bigger hits off that album.
and the oldies artists you mention are heard on the radio every day, along with a lot of other crossover artists.
so you have no need to be ashamed, regardless of what color you are, since there are no radio stations that hold the views you imagine.

    T.... M....

    Tony Mul https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Ain%27t_Gonna_Stand_for_It

    T.... M....

Tony Mul I agree 100%, and Im white. Im 62 and I have loved all music. When I was in the Marine Corps 73-77, I watched Soul Train all the time. My Marine buddies called me "The Blackest White Guy in the Marine Corps. Yes Soul stations should have played this several times per day. No know what? "I ain"t gonna stay for this" I will play it every day.

    T.... M....

Tony Mul A station caters to the music fans want to hear, if someone regardless of color tunes into R&B station, they expect to hear that, That's not racist, When you tune into Alt Rock station, you don't expect to get R&B, many black artists who have done alternative soul and rock have never even gotten played on the radio, and all of those artist you mentioned, many of there songs were commercialised, very boring, dry, plus many black people bought this album and enjoyed this song, so stop using irrelevant situations to cry "racist"

    T.... M....

I heard it a lot on the radio

  81. F.... N....

Love this, music was real back then..

  82. M.... B....

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY STEVIE <3

Tony Berry I love it too. I remember NO stations played this, I was around 23 yrs old when this was a hit. Also, Im not a country fan, and Im from West Virginian. Im 62 now I grew up on Stevie's music. He took us Baby Boomers through the late 60s and on into 70s. GREAT MAN.

    E.... M....

Eu achava que essa música era do Eric Clapton!
Foi mal Stevie Wonder, não sabia que era composição sua!
    Adoro essa música!

I thinkin' was from Eric Clapton!
Sorry Stevie Wonder, i do not know than was his songwriter!
    I love that song!

    E.... M....

Thank you, Elizabeth Muniz, for posting the lyrics. I'd not even heard this song before NOW!!!! Never equated Stevie with country music. And I'm not a huge or even "big" country music listener anyway. But the song and (of course) the music are STELLAR!!!!

    E.... M....

Elizabeth Muniz with Uncle Charlie and older brother Ronnie Wilson of The Gap Band with exception of Robert background

    E.... M....

nasty country folks raping kids and their own daughters lmao..Stevie might be sight impaired but hes not stupid

  84. J.... C....

l aint gonna stand for it

    J.... C....

Joyce726 C yes I agree. Great song, should have been played more, and Im a white guy.

  85. J.... C....

I gonna stand for it! Stevie went a little country but I love this song!

    J.... C....

Joyce726 C going country just shows you how talented Stevie is.

    J.... C....

Joyce726 C Stevie always had a silly side to him. He was always a big kid!

    J.... C....

It just goes to show how Stevie can be experimental and push the boundaries of music. It paid off because this song went to the Billboard Top 20.

    J.... C....

Country is hardly exclusive.... Charley Pride, Aaron Neville, Freddy Fender.... Some of the greatest musicians ever...

  86. C.... S....

    entered Billboard Dec 13, 1980 ..reached #11
