Stevie Wonder - Can I Get A Witness Lyrics

Ah ah listen everybody, specially you girls
Is it right to be left alone when the one you love is never home
I love too hard my friends sometimes say
But I believe I believe that a woman should be loved that way
But it hurts me so inside to see you treat me so unkind
Somebody somewhere tell her it ain't fair
Can I get a witness
I want a witness
Somebody
I want a witness
Is it right to be treated so bad when you give her everything you had
Keep on talking in my sleep 'cause I haven't seen my baby all week
Now you kids you all agree is that the way it's supposed to be
Let me hear you, let me hear you say yeah, yeah, yeah
Up early in the morning with her on my mind
Took to find it out all night I been cryin'
But I believe a woman's a man's best friend
I'm gonna stick by hr till the very end
Well she causes so much misery how's a gal supposed to be
Somebody somewhere tell her it ain't right
Can I get a witness, can I get a witness
I want a witness
Somebody
Can I get a witness
Everybody knows especially you girls
That a love can be sad but my beloved's twice as bad
Now you kids do all agree that ain't the way it's supposed to be
Let me hear you, let me hear you say yeah, yeah, yeah
I want a witness
I want a witness
Yeah, I want a witness
Somebody
Is it right to be treated so bad when you give her everything you had
Keep on talking in my sleep 'cause I haven't seen my baby all week
Now you kids you all agree is that the way it's supposed to be
Let me hear you, let me hear you say yeah, yeah, yeah
I want a witness...

This is just one instance of Motown releasing singles by different artists of the same songs. So yes it WAS done in some instances. This version by Stevie would have been a good single, but I think some politics were involved seeing Gaye was married to Anna at the time also. They wouldn't have wanted this version to eclipse his iconic definitive version. That's just my guess..... maybe not. Who knows. I'm just glad we have access to this good music. :-)

I Heard It Through the Grapevine is a song written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong for Motown Records in 1966, and made famous by Marvin Gaye in a ***single*** released in October 1968 on Motown's Tamla label.
Whitfield produced a version with Gladys Knight & the Pips, which Gordy agreed to release as a ***single*** in September 1967, and which went to number two in the Billboard chart. The Marvin Gaye version was placed on his 1968 album In the Groove, where it gained the attention of radio disc jockeys, and Gordy finally agreed to its release as a ***single*** in October 1968, when it went to the top of the Billboard Pop Singles chart for seven weeks from December 1968 to January 1969 and became for a time the biggest hit single on the Motown label.

@betterdayz86 What are you talking about? I think you meant to type that Motown has never released the same single twice. Well, there are two examples that prove you're wrong and have no clue as to what you are talking about. "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" were both singles by different artists, at different times. Come on.

*sigh* I was saying that Motown should have released Stevie's version as a single. You know Motown had a history of releasing the same songs by different artists, right? Also, what are you even talking about in your comment anyway?

This should've been released as a single for Stevie.
