This one sounds like "Postcard" from Grace For Drowning in some parts. It's still great regardless. I've been so hung up on Hand.Cannot.Erase still that I totally forgot this existed!

Obviously left off a full-length studio album as it's more of an outtake than anything, i.e. "Shallow" and most probably "Postcard" grew out of it. Still an effing brilliant song though.

Yeah this is nice. Reminds me of Stupid Dream/ambulance chasers era PT. Short, punchy and sweet. The production isnt really up to par though imho. That choir should be beefier. It's barely audible here.

Love this ...such a beautiful catchy song .. but with the dark edge and lyrics I love I wouldn't have it any other way These songs should have been on HCE to make it an even more incredible album.. Shallow is a good song, but I can't deny it. This is Wilson's evolution as an artist, and, ergo, a better song.

Yeah, Deadwing is better overall, but Shallow is by far the weakest track on the album.

Shallow was kind of an experimental song, as Steven has noted from time to time.

Michael Edwards I genuinely expected shallow to pop out amazingly well in the 5.1 DTS release of Deadwing. But it's the least impressive in that too.

Why do people hate fade-outs? There's no better way to end a catchy song than with fade-out, it feels like it goes on forever. Giving it an ending would kill the thing altogether.

Depending on the end you choose to give it (time flies ending for example)

+sonicadv27 This is a pointless thing to add but hey. I was listening to this song on headphones via phone while I browsed youtube on the PC and read your comment as the song played.

By mere coincidence the track faded out as the vid was at 2:35...basically I heard 4:29 and 2:35 at the same time and all I could hear was the track fade out and the chorus continued in the backround. Basically it echoed what you said about the song feeling like it goes on forever. Great point! Cheers!

+sonicadv27 I don't hate fade outs, sometimes I think they're the best way to end a song. In this case, I think he even said most of this was pulled from an old demo, so he probably didn't want to rebuilt the song from scratch just to create an ending. So it just feels like it's a little bit half-baked.

+Ramón Martínez I noticed that too...the versus of the two songs tend to get mixed together in my head. And yeah, I noticed that one section in My Book of Regrets sounds a little like Time Flies, and also there's a section in Sentimental that sounds a bit like Trains. :) I think in some cases he's deliberately making reference. Like how in "Pure Narcotic", he uses a line directly from "Wake As a Gun" from Signify. Oh, and one more thing...if you hum the opening verse to "Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth Before it is Recycled" and the first verse of "Our House" by Madness, they're very similar. ;)
