Steve Hackett - The Court Of The Crimson King Lyrics

The rusted chains of prison moons
Are shattered by the sun
I walk a road, horizons change
The tournament's begun
The purple piper plays his tune
The choir softly sing
Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
For the court of the crimson king

The keeper of the city keys
Put shutters on the dreams
I wait outside the pilgrims' door
With insufficient schemes
The black queen chants the funeral march
The cracked brass bells will ring
To summon back the fire witch
To the court of the crimson king

The gardener plants an evergreen
Whilst trampling on a flower
I chase the wind of a prism ship
To taste the sweet and sour
The pattern juggler lifts his hand
The orchestra begin
As slowly turns the grinding wheel
In the court of the crimson king

On soft grey mornings widows cry
The wise men share a joke
I run to grasp divining signs
To satisfy the hoax
The yellow jester does not play
But gently pulls the strings
And smiles as the puppets dance
In the court of the crimson king

The original King Crimson is a funny thing because although they were so great and iconic, the personalities involved were definitely not sustainably compatible, hence the split I guess. It seems like there were at least two visions of the band, with Ian McDonald on one side pushing towards I Talk To The Wind and Epitaph and Fripp on the other going for Schizoid Man and Moonchild. I know those are all band compositions, but plainly McDonald and Giles wanted to play “nice” music and Fripp wanted to go full on Hendrix does modern classical. In hindsight it seems like Fripp needed people like Wetton all along and clearly Ian McDonald and Steve Hackett should have formed a band. What was Ian McDonald up to in 1977 anyway?

  6. H.... t....

    Hi John, R.I.P.

  7. M.... H....

What tour would this have been with Chester and Steve Hackett? I didn't think there was any King Crimson event that Fripp was not part of, maybe this was a solo act. Ian McDonald and Wetton still wonderful on this one, Hackett Too!!

  8. n.... s....

the song reminds uriah heep, but can't remember what song

  9. M.... G....

Who is playing keys on this?

  10. B.... G....

Is this the recording used for Hackett's Tokyo Tapes album? It sounds very similiar, although that might be because it appears to have the same lineup.

  11. n.... b....

    Wow!!! Just Wow!!! Incredible.

  12. D.... M....

If only Ian MacDonald could team up with Ian Anderson for a masterpiece or two.

  21. M.... Y....

Kill the drummer...Michael GILES forever !!!!

    M.... Y....

This isn't supposed to be a version of King Crimson - it's a Steve Jackett-helmed "prog supergroup", playing songs from the members' careers. I think Chester sounds great/does justice here - are you of the opinion that Giles is supposed to be the only person allowed to play drums on any version of "Court" ever performed?

  22. V.... S....

This track resurrected on the European tour that ended in Paris in december last year. It´s most sad that Fripp and Wetton
    aren´t on speaking terms nowadays.

    M.... S....

Magnus Sturesson - yes they are. I don't know where you got that info, as a matter of fact RF has visited JW several times at his house while he was still recovering from cancer.

JW even posted a couple of photos of him and RF on his twitter account from this past Christmas.

    Cheers.

    @Ram4
The Boz lineup was different ! It included saxophone and flute !
Actually I like all KC lineups. My first experience of seeing them live was on two occasions in 81. I never had the chance to see the 69-74 KC bands. But I saw Robert Fripp on two previous to 81 occasions. The first was in 75 with Brian Eno and the Second with the League of Gentlemen ! Unforgettable experiences !

    I.... ....

theo9952 I saw the Boz lineup !!!!!! Remarkable, and I'll never be the same. It made my standards so impossibly high!!! It was their last gig ever with that bunch. He sang this song and so many.. from all four albums. Cadence and Cascade was a favorite. And Formentera Lady, Cirkus, Ladies of the Road, etc. 💚

    I.... ....

    Iconoclast444 ,

    This is Great!

  96. P.... ....

    Who is the drummer?

    P.... ....

+Psyfrox Chester Thompson... played with Genesis live for years, before that was with Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention and before that Weather Report... I believe he was also the house drummer for a musical version of the Wizard of Oz sometime in the early 70s...

    P.... ....

    +nickwf1commdept2 thanks!!

  97. W.... E....

Magnificent. Beautifully played. Thank you for posting, and for identifying the band members.
