Steve Hackett - Shadow Of The Hierophant Lyrics

Veiling the nightshade bride stalks a flower revealed
Nearing the hour make haste to their threshold concealed

Lost in thought in search of vision
As the moon eclipsed the sun

Casting the same steps glimpsing his own fate to come
Melt in the dream void from which he never can run

Lost in thought in search of vision
As the moon eclipsed the sun

Tears fill the fountains failing their promise to heal
Rippling the waters mirror an ended ideal

Deep in thought but robbed of vision
As the moon eclipsed the sun

Steve Hackett Shadow Of The Hierophant Comments
  1. g.... p....

Highly ironic that a stoopid ad about a stoopid mechanical stoopid chord progression software stoopidly pops in right in the climax of this truly incredible and emotional truly human chord progression.

  2. E.... R....

    Wow! Great

  3. B.... R....

    carefully crafted masterpiece ...

    B.... R....

I was going to listen (only) to this, but ended up WATCHING it ... ...

  4. D.... G....

    Glorious!

  5. M.... J....

    Bravo Maestro!!

  6. B.... P....

Reminds me again of why Hackett was so instrumental to the success of Genesis after he joined them. This is the best Genesis album that Genesis never made. :-). I loved this tune and the album as a whole when I first hear it in 1976. It is prog at it's best. Steve and his crew are in top form in this performance.

  7. V.... 5....

STANDING OVATION FOR ONE OF THE GREAT SONGS EVER!!!!!

  8. V.... 5....

    MASTERPIECE.... I'M IN TEARS. 😪😪

  9. R.... L....

    W-O-W...!!

  10. C.... M....

Steve Hackett doesn't age. He looks just like he did in '76.

  11. I.... C....

If Steve put a preposterous Puritan hat on he’d look almost identical to Ritchie Blackmore in that stage lighting. Unfortunately for Ritchie the similarity ends there because older age hasn’t been as kind to his playing capability as it has to Steve’s.

  12. D.... C....

    I’m in Heaven !!

  13. D.... F....

Gary O'Toole's drum work can be judged either as an exhibition that puts Phil Collins' to shame or else one that helps us to further appreciate the prowess and talent of the afore-mentioned Genesis/Brand X drummer.

  14. A.... S....

So, could someone tell me where this comes from...I'd love to buy (yes buy) the whole DVD.

  15. D.... P....

    Amanda Lehmann,,, 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍!!!

  16. l.... t....

why the fuck is the drummer wearing a suit for?

  17. M.... v....

im not really into rock (anymore) but genesis and their (ex)members i keep following. goosebumps and so now a then a tear this is real music as music should be played.

  18. f.... ....

    I am awestruck. perfection.

  19. C.... W....

I must admit I missed the original version when it came out. Notwithstanding Hackett's genius in writing it I got to know the song through a truly oustanding cover from Brazil's Fleesh. Please give that one a whirl - it is most impressive. They are the only cover band I have ever come across where the cover really is at least as good as the original.

  20. g.... h....

I bought Voyage of the Acolyte after Spectral Mornings had been introduced to me by housemates (and we had seen SH in concert at Plymouth Poly). They also introduced me to mushrooms and I vividly remember listening to this at full volume with an increasing sense of dread....a very Neil moment.

  21. R.... M....

Hackett was made a member of Genesis for his most original musical contributions, as here solo.

  22. G.... D....

    WOW !!!

  23. G.... C....

Steve Hackett... Great Musician and Performer...!

  24. R.... J....

    pompous tripe

  25. N.... R....

    Just fabulous

  26. H.... I....

What is Nick doing there, sitting on the floor and hiting some buttons? Can someone explain to me?

    H.... I....

Playing bass pedals by hand (instead of by foot).

    H.... I....

@Churgn3Words Ok, thank you and sorry for my minor knowledge. But i always thougt a bassplayer plays the bass with his bass-guitar and the pedals are for some effects. So he can play the bass also without the guitar just with the pedals? I´m just curious and don´t know how it works.

  27. P.... ....

Thank you for uploading Prog Master II ....and thank you to Steve & Band for these great moments !

  28. E.... l....

    Maravilloso ♡

  29. f.... ....

B.4. the Hierophant came marching.... I heard some Camel Sounds, wonderful !
I came back and listen also to the studio LP version, who emphasis the Hierophant marching in and burning.
3 Weeks going, still in shock !

  30. P.... Y....

Shout out to the drummer. That ‘mad’ drumming across a legato groove is very hard to execute as well as he is doing. It is a very effective expression of musical mania. I have used that in my compositions and just write YOU on the drummer’s chart for learning purposes.

  31. P.... Y....

    Fantastic guitar playing! Just perfect.

  32. J.... B....

Hair in my neck still standing up minutes after this performance. What a wonderfully weird and powerful song. (I think Phil Collins did the drums back then, but Gary just totally rocks it). Co-written with Rutherford and bass also performed by him.

  33. f.... ....

Listened 20th time this week.....Still chasing my heart !

  34. r.... k....

  36. R.... M....

Hallo i hear this decades,, and now?? Incredible🤗👍🤣

  37. S.... O....

estoy loco o tiene un aire a claro de luna de beethoven?

  38. B.... M....

    Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuerrrrrr !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  39. M.... G....

    Amanda's singing was absolutely delightful.

  40. O.... A....

Нетленка с альбома 1975 года!!! Это великолепно!!!

  41. D.... A....

I've seen most of Steve's gigs in Birmingham and this was one of the best. He is still going strong and the current Selling England tour is amazing. Cannot wait for Seconds Out next year.

  42. E.... L....

This is absolutely beautiful. I'm kicking myself for not have followed his career after he left Genesis.

  43. D.... L....

Have the privilege of attending 3 concerts during the years. Steve & the band have one constant. They just grow better with time. Amazing.

  44. M.... M....

I remember how this track thrilled me, the first time I played "Voyage" on my LP deck, back in 1984 or 1985, I'd say... the first solo album by Steve that I bought. I really enjoyed the voice of Sally Oldfield and of course, this fantastic, epic, apocalyptic finale, with the bells and this soaring guitar... Great version, very powerful but I regret the bells, and I could really do without this saxophone... that's totally out of place for me. I really don't get why Steve adds sax to his arrangements instead of flute or oboe, maybe... Let the electric guitar/violin sing ! Gary O'Toole went really over-the-top on this, I love it !! Epic !!! a real pity he stopped working with Steve. I saw this performed live in 2011, if I remember well, and it was definitely uplifting.

  45. V.... B....

    Sensacional.

  46. J.... v....

    Chickenskinn

  47. M.... R....

    Fucking staggering!!!!!

  48. P.... B....

Très belle mélodie de Steve Hackett . Le batteur Gary O'Toole est excellent ! !

  49. J.... ....

Should have been part of Trick of The Tail or Wind & Wuthering (smacks Tony in the head)

  50. U.... ....

The main theme of this puts pictures in my mind, of a giant iron ship breaking slowly away from a planetary orbitting dock heading off into a maelstrom of a technicolor intergalactic storm then..the unknown....:)

  51. S.... S....

Maybe progressive rock isn't for me.

  52. t.... ....

    Gary O’Toole. Weapons grade drummer.

  53. R.... ....

Holy Shit !! that is all I can say. WOW

  54. S.... ....

It Only Gets Better. Progressive Rock at it's Finest.

  55. R.... V....

    THAT'S what I call music !

  56. J.... ....

    Masterpeace!

  57. A.... w....

Ok, I'll say it: If Amanda Lehmann turned her head and smiled at me, I would proceed to utter utter gibberish.

    A.... w....

And your utterances would be worthy.....

    A.... w....

@Bruce Moeller That's very kind of you, sir, but "gabble garble dribble beedeebeedee bobble" is not my idea of worthy utterances.

  58. s.... ....

    Awesome

  59. I.... W....

Who the fuck plays drums in a suit & tie?

  60. Z.... K....

this is beautiful song...from a good times...

  61. T.... s....

Saw this guy in concert two weeks ago... simply stunning!

  62. k.... ....

Gary O'Toole is occasionally (for reasons I fail to understand) taken to task for his ability in some of these Hackett videos. The guy's a brill drummer as this track so clearly reveals. QED. Cheers!

    k.... ....

Right you are.  Gary O'Toole played this STRONG!  Best version of SOTH I've ever heard (wasn't there in person to see it live--shame).  Best SOTH drumming too.  Kudos to Gary.Saw Steve Hackett at the Orpheum Theatre (Los Angeles) in October 2019.  Fifth row centerish.  See him every time he comes to town.  If you're a Genesis/Prog fan, how can you not go see one of the last best players?  New drummer (Craig Blundell) is definitely wicked good as well.As Bill Bruford once said, these prog bands can be tough.  They're always looking to upgrade to the best musician.  So if you can't play drums like Bill, you're out and Bill is in.  If you can't play guitar like Steve Howe (or Steve Hackett), you're out and Steve is in.  Brutal.  But leaves us with transcendental music that endures.  Musical Darwinism.

  63. M.... ....

Such a talented ensemble. These productions just get better and better.

Wow ... this Performance is absolutely premium stuff. Gives me the creeps. Thanks for sharing!

  76. W.... ....

All due respect to Sally Oldfield who sang on the original version but Amanda Lehmann has such a lovely voice and sings this so beautifully like a christmas carol plus she is an amazing guitar player too. She's the whole package and not bad on the eyes either.

  77. D.... W....

    Brilliant

  78. R.... ....

  83. T.... N....

Shiver , the voice of that female singer is absolute misplaced ( Heavy german accent ) , no chance to reach the highs of Sally Oldfield ! ( orig. female singer )

  84. R.... B....

When you hear Steve's solo work you realize how much he contributed to Genesis.

the prog side of Genesis: Steve and Peter forever!

  89. T.... B....

Happy for those who enjoy this. It's boring as all get out to me. Ponderous. Prog rock jack off.

    T.... B....

So.........We would all love to hear some of your "non-boring as all get out stuff".......feel free to post it !!!!

  90. R.... ....

It seems like most of the song is in a twelve beat signature, and some of the musicians are stressing the three beats and some the four, within, which explains why the length. I didn't understand this forty five? years ago when I first listened to it. Clever and rich.

  91. P.... P....

    Absolute bliss!

  92. D.... G....

    Just...Amazing !!! Absolutly Great !!! Salud y Vida Pa'lante !!! Cheers and Life On !!!
