Steve Earle - Waitin' On The Sky Lyrics

I grew up in a military town
Waitin’ on the sky to fall
Everybody I knew hanqin' around wonderin’
What they’d do when the Draft Board called
Lookin’ back it musta been a miracle
How I ever grew up at all
To sing about livin' in a military town
Waitin' on the sky to fall
Waitin' on the sky to fall, boys
Waitin' on the sky to fall
Chicken Little wasn't makin' nothin' but noise
Waitin' on the sky to fall

Spent a lonely lifetime rollin’ down the line
Searchin’ for the Holy Grail
Never once crossed my solitary mind
That any such consecrated quest’d fail
Came upon an ocean and much to my chagrin
They told me that ship had sailed
Walkin’ on the water cause I never learned
To swin searchin’ for the Holy Grail
Searchin’ for the Holy Grail, friends
Searchin’ for the Holy Grail
Been across the oceans and now I’m back again
Searchin’ for the Holy Grail

Been around enough to know a little bit now
And I’m sitting on tip of the world
Wangin’ on a guitar while the sun goes down
And singin a song about a redheaded girl
Was a time I would have said those days were gone
But I’m givin’ it another whirl
Didn’t know that I was gonna live this long
Now I’m sitting’ on top of the world
Sittin’ on top of the world, y’all
Sittin’ on top of the world
Eyes wide open until the Messenger calls
Sittin’ on top of the world

It is a bouzouki, similar to an octave mandolin. Steve says you call it an octave mandolin at airport security.

It makes me sad and happy at the same time that this guy is honored for being the greatest songwriter since his friend Townes Van Zandt. Sad because he truely is GREAT and happy because it's a secret treasure that only a few with a gifted ear to know what their listening to really know this.

@paskoxbox really? you need to really listen to Steve Earle, his music, passion and work for the betterman so many goes back many years..probably before you were even born. This is real music that needs to be heard with an open heart. God bless Steve Earle.

    @MrGraemeKirkwood
My understanding is that the terms (octave mandolin and bouzouki) are somewhat fluid, but I do know that Steve refers to this as an Irish bouzouki on the album and in concerts. He jokes that you call it an octave mandolin if you are going through airport security.

  18. J.... M....

I believe it's an Irish Bouzouki.

  19. 9.... ....

Not a guitar. It's a bouzouki and tuned up like a mandolin. Usually bouzouki's are tuned to "G"

  20. D.... ....

@mgriffin777 Looks like an octave mandolin aka a mandola.

  21. M.... G....

I don't know what kind of guitar that is...but I want it.

  22. G.... S....

Thank you Peter Gammons for sending me here. Good stuff.
