Steve Earle - Nowhere Road Lyrics

There's a road, in Oklahoma
Straighter than a preacher
Longer than a memory
And it goes, forever onward
Been a good teacher
For a lot of country boys like me
I push that load from here to someday
I'll push as long as I'm alive, but I don't know how long I'll last
'Cause it's just a road, it ain't no highway
I'm blowin' by the double five
I know I'm going way too fast

I been down this road just searching' for the end
It don't go nowhere, it just brings you back again
Leaves you lonely and cold, standin' on the shoulder
But you've come too far to go back home
So you're walkin' on a nowhere road

Some folks say, if you keep rollin'
And keep it on the yellow line
It'll take you on the big highway
But there's a toll to pay, if you're going
The keeper of the gate is blind
So you better be prepared to pay

Steve Earle should have been as big as Springsteen, his life style probably kept getting in the way.

    Steve Earle is great

  18. Debra Soiseth

This was during a hot period for him. He's a great songwriter, he's gotten a lot more political and off the popular music.

Before Steve's politics ruined his songwriting. Will always love him regardless.

    duane colbert

Yeah he's a true Rebel, that's why not everyone is satisfied with him all the way.all a rebel really wants is just to live and let live with out anyone governing them too much 🙂

    Wow that is on

  47. miguel sanchez

I was surprised to find out in 1996 while working in the Empty Quarter in Oman and near Saudi Arabia how popular Steve Earle was in Ireland. Evenings at our camp pub singing Earle songs to a guitar player by my Irish buddies made those 5 weeks by 14 hour days pass a lot easier. Earle has never done it the easy or lucrative way but songwriting talent, dedication, and individualism put him up there with Bob Dylan and Van Morrison. Genre busting talent.

    Kyle Bookout

Damn straight my friend! Well said.

    G Man

    The Pogues

    Joanna Backman

Oh they adore Steve in Ireland...like a lot of us here in the US OF A do...

  60. rowdy collins

Royston Stiver, you really don't know much about music do you, your about as lame as your first name!

  61. 666Almighty

Steve Earle and Dwight Yoakam both sing with that twang

  62. J. Michael Eisenhaur

No artist could do more with 3 chords (except maybe Cash).

    Shane

    J. Michael Eisenhaur no kidding! It's amazing how many old forgotten Steve Earle songs you stumble across fiddling around with G, C, and D chords. These are the very first chords you learn to play, and he took them and made all kinds of amazing music that still resonates with people even decades later. Whatever he might lack in fancy guitar playing he makes up in pure heart.

    Joshua Kozee

This is a weyland jennings song

    Ray Rowsell

JayDog steve earl wrote it . 👍👍

    Joshua Kozee

i was not able to confirm this, so i will not deny it

    Bradley Olson

@Joshua Kozee Steve wrote it and recorded it first in 1987 on his Exit-O album. Waylon and Willie covered it in 1996 for a remastered reissue of the Wanted! The Outlaws compilation.

  63. Royston Stiver

waylon and willie did it better

    Royston Stiver

Alright I just don't like steve's voice and the way he sings it.

    Kelton King

@Royston Stiver It's his song he can sing it anyway he wants lol.

    amcreb

True, but the guy doesn't need to like it if he doesn't want lol

    Thomas McGowan

they didn't have a good tempo.

    Bob Berry

Steve produced their version. Got a hell of a sound on it too

  76. ddak32

Yeah! sitting outside exibit hall in my truck back in the 80's!!!

  77. Brian Johnston

I grew up wearing out a copy of Exit 0 my dad made for me.  This is still one of the greatest songs ever.  Brings back memories every time I hear it.

    Yvette Moore

+Brian Johnston Love that whole album :)

  78. steve stockner

Is that drummer the same one that plays om the Marty Stuart show

    fancifulfilly

Most likely so! I haven't seen Marty's show in ages, but I do know that the drummer for Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives is Harry Stinson, who was at one time the drummer for Steve Earle and the Dukes. And also, he looks like the same guy I see in Marty's band at his concerts.

  79. Trev Mac

because of this song and video i *still* wear a bandanna around my wrist like Steve

  80. Huawei is a criminal organization.

Wow, the contrast of this with the Outlaws version is stark.  It is amazing what a giant baritone like Jennings can do for this song!

    Bruce Macpherson

Sorry, partner, I disagree. Even Waylon can't touch Steve and the Dukes on this one.

    Huawei is a criminal organization.

    +Bruce Macpherson

Bruce, with all due respect, not even Steve would not agree with you. I think that Steve probably never realized what a bigger voice could do with the song. It is, either way, a great song.

  81. Yqueque David from London.

THE YQUEQUE has travelled the Nowhere Road !!

  82. redher

  83. Carmen L. Blair

Yes,"there is a toll to pay"-GOOD lyrics, loveable vocals and the distinctive melody that is Steve Earl's.He performed some of his best songs yet with the Dukes.

  84. Eric Simon

I wish this song was longer...I love it and always end up playing twice in a row while I'm trucking.

    dickthedalek

driving this afternoon, this song came on - over too soon - played it again..

    Jeffrey Sykes

I been listening to it like 10 times in a row the last week or so.

  87. Fretless99

Answer to Copperhead Road?..or vice versa? The similarities, musically, are striking.............

    Bradley Olson

This came out before Copperhead Road. This song came out in 1987, Copperhead Road came out in 1988.

  88. TEXASGUNFIGHTER

    Awesome song!!

  89. yamini chauhan

    Love Steve Earle!!!

  90. Chuckie In Montana

We got to see Steve at Tulsa City Limits back in the mid-80's, about when this was made - WHAT A SHOWMAN!!!  Then again about a year ago in Montana, when we could see the toll that life on the road takes.  Bless you, Steve Earle & keep safe -

    Steve Perreira

It's not the road, it's the drugs, smoking, and other screwed up ways he lives his life.  How about those 7 wives?  Good music though!

    Chuckie In Montana

I have not risen to a place where I can pass judgement on Mr. Earle...

    nilradem

@Steve Perreira It is only six wives, since he married one of them twice twice... but who is counting. :)

    Steve Perreira

@nilradem 7 is a lucky number, so best wishes on the actual #7. Thanks for the correction Me Darlin'

    nilradem

No problem - I am probably a little too obsessed with Steve Earle.  I have heard has already has a girlfriend, so maybe 7 is lucky. He has said this divorce was the hardest, since it was his longest marriage and his only sober, and he tried harder to keep it together.

  91. Alejandro Soria

clasico clasico me ase acordar viejos amigos para bailar un buen country

  92. Jonah McFarlane
