Steve Earle - Mr. Mudd And Mr. Gold Lyrics
Well the wicked king of clubs awoke
And it was to his queen turned
His lips were laughing as they spoke
His eyes like bullets burned
His queen smiled low and blissfully
Let's make some wretched fool to play
Plain it was she did agree
He send his deuce down into diamond
His four to hart, and his trey to spade
Three kings with their legions come
Preparations soon where made
They voted club the days commander
All but the outlaw jack of diamonds
And the aces in the sky
Well, he gave his sevens first instructions
Spirit me a game of stud
Stakes unscarred by limitation
Between a man named Gold and man named Mud
Club filled Gold with greedy vapors
Till his long, green eyes did glow
And Mudd was left with the sighs and trembles
Watching his hard earned money go
Flushes fell on Gold like water
Tens they paired and paired again
But the aces only flew through heaven
And the diamond jack called no man friend
Now, the Diamond Queen saw Muds ordeal
Began to think of her long lost son
Fell to her knees with a mother's mercy
And prayed to the angels every one
Now, the Diamond Queen, she prayed and prayed
And the Diamond Angel filled Muds hole
The wicked King of Clubs himself
Fell in face down in front of Gold
Now, three kings come to Clubs command
But the angels from the sky did ride
Three kings up on the streets of Gold
Three fireballs on the muddy side
The club queen heard her husband's call
But Lord, that Queen of Diamond's joy
When the outlaw in the heavenly hall
Turned out to be a wandering boy
Now, Mudd he checked and Gold bet all
And Mudd he raised and Gold did call
And the smile just melted on his face
When Mudd turned over that diamond ace
Now, here's what this story's told
If you feel like Mudd you'll end up Gold
If you feel like lost, you'll end up found
So amigo, lay them raises down

Steve Earle Mr. Mudd And Mr. Gold Comments
Nobody could possibly top Townes' original version but they did a damn fine version here.
listen to Steve Earles performance on Austin City Limits, and you will see how well he can cover this tune! Just Steve and his 6, quite impressive
Yeah, I'm one of those that much prefer the Townes original of this to the cover, and I think I've pinpointed why. For my tastes anyway, it's WAY too rushed. Such a tale can't effectively be told in 2:18. If anything even TVZ's pacing could be slowed down a little, I could imagine a great, comfortable version of this song lasting 5 or 6 minutes. I do really dig the dual storytelling approach though. Still a great track.
Seven Psychopaths.
Horrible vocals!

Responding to an old comment here - but to answer your question Justin and Justin Townes Earle are the same - Steve's oldest son. His second son is not a musician (Ian) and too early to tell for his youngest John Henry (with Allison Moorer) who is only 1 1/2... though I expect he will have some talent.
i love his voice; i don't even know what it is. quality x.
nobody knows what justin or earle or towne would/would've done. its only how the cards fall
Justin will always play this before he'll play one of his dad's songs in concert
@spicezz
A damn good son too. He's a fantastic artist in his own right.
SUPERDUPER ... nobody cares to hear your negativity. Townes was awesome, and even if the original was better its still really awesome to hear people covering his music. Great Job guys, I liked the new edge you put on it and the dual storytellers was kinda cool too. Ya did it justice =)
Nice try Steve- too bad you fucking suck.
Amigo, lay them raises down.
Steves new album is fantastic...this duet with JTE is no exception
