Steve Earle - John Walker's Blues Lyrics

I'm just an American boy raised on MTV
And I've seen all those kids in the soda pop ads
But none of 'em looked like me
So I started lookin' around for a light out of the dim
And the first thing I heard that made sense was the word
Of Mohammed, peace be upon him

[Chorus:]
A shadu la ilaha illa Allah
There is no God but God

If my daddy could see me now - chains around my feet
He don't understand that sometimes a man
Has got to fight for what he believes
And I believe God is great, all praise due to him
And if I should die, I'll rise up to the sky
Just like Jesus, peace be upon him

[Chorus]

We came to fight the Jihad and our hearts were pure and strong
As death filled the air, we all offered up prayers
And prepared for our martyrdom
But Allah had some other plan, some secret not revealed
Now they're draggin' me back with my head in a sack
To the land of the infidel

A shadu la ilaha illa Allah
A shadu la ilaha illa Allah

Steve Earle John Walker's Blues Comments
  1. R.... ....

I'm still a fan of Steve Earle, but this is fucked up. I get where he was coming from at the time - Bush doctrine basically made Muslims lawless.

But glorifying assholes like this who join terrorist organisations is just not ok.

  2. T.... M....

Based on the comments, I think the Jihadis are the getting the wrong fucking picture about this song. :-/

  3. J.... W....

    Well shit

  4. P.... V....

    great song.

  5. R.... T....

I would like to amend my last comment because he thinks Isis is doing a good job so they should have kept him in prison the rest of his life.

  6. R.... T....

John left prison today 5/23/2019 and I still think that he was wrong but after serving 18 years he should get another chance because he so young when this occurred.

    R.... T....

Age doesn't really matter...We have a system, he was put into it, served his time. Though John may not agree with it and went to extreme's to destroy it, it still worked for him and that's what America is all about

  7. a.... ....

the only good thing i've ever heard him sing - though there haven't been so many

    a.... ....

You need to clean out your ears and listen to more

  8. b.... h....

Well i think abdul hamid is role model for those European fighters who are fighting with isis.

  9. b.... ....

Steve Earle the great traitor, well your Taliban sweetheart will be released in may. You write a song to pretty much honor this piece of shit. Nevermind the thousands that died during 911 at the hands of the group that he was a member of, Go ahead and write your songs you anti-American fuck, maybe your next one will honor Hitler or Bin Laden. Fuck you Steve , Walker, yalls jihad and whatever else y'all are for. You both should be taking a dirt nap.

    b.... ....

THis is not honoring Walker, and if you think that you need to listen more carefully. It is trying to understand why a teenager would be drawn to radical Islam, and Steve has said it is mostly written because Walker looked like his own son. Also, for the record, we were not at war with the Taliban when Walker went over there, which was before 9/11, so calling him a traitor is a stretch. (In fact the US supported the Taliban in the early-90s because they were rebelling against the Soviets, though in 2000 we were supporting the Northern Alliance against the Taliban, we were not directly at war.)

  10. D.... C....

Great songwriting. Slow, steady crescendo throughout. Steve Earle's empathy and ability to see things through John Walker Lindh's perspective really illuminates what it might be to see the world through another human being's eyes. This song is really something.

  11. .... ....

if felt sorry for this young man.he made a stupid mistake, but he went to jail for 25 yrs.i think this is harsh.he was 20 yrs old,at such age you are not allowed to drink alcohol in some states.

  12. Y.... P....

Boo hoo, Steve. I live in a world of disillusionment too, but you don't see me going around blowing up buildings. We are not the same. Islam teaches that it is the final religion and to bring death to those who insult the prophet. This is antithetical to and incompatible with a society that values free expression of opinion. "I'm just an American boy who thinks women are inherently subservient and who's willing to kill civilians for my own sun-induced God hallucinations."

  13. D.... W....

Love this guy true hero ! Cia traitors

  14. S.... ....

    Brave, insightful, necessary.....Truly great song-writing.

  15. p.... b....

this dude sucks and so does Steve Earle.

  16. J.... C....

why write a song about a radio 2 ageing dj

  17. M.... ....

This young man has long gone out of the public consciousness. I shudder to think of his life now.

    M.... ....

MrDrewlips he will be released May 2019

    M.... ....

MrDrewlips how about the American soldier that guy killed capturing this spoiled brat? He had it kinda tough too, bleeding heart

  18. H.... R....

    steven earle so cool

  19. O.... D....

Literal translation is, there is no god but allah. Not the same as there is no god but god.

    O.... D....

"Allah" means God in Arabic, even when they're talking about the Christian's God or the polytheists religions' Gods (singular : Allah, plural : Ilaliha)

    O.... D....

And the Christian god is the god of the Qur'an, even if they do not believe Jesus is god., it is understood to be the same god.

  20. D.... C....

What great storytelling . Steve Earle is a master.

  21. o.... ....

As essential today as it was a decade and a half ago.

  22. W.... H....

Some 14 or 15 years later and people still don't realise this isn't a sympathy or sided song.

    W.... H....

people are dumb...your suppose to listen to this like your a journalist. Neutral

    W.... H....

He certainly is not taking a side in the conflict.  Yet I don't think he wants us to be distanced and objective like a journalist, but to come from a humanist perspective that acknowledges good and bad in all of us.  He is trying to show  JWL as a young man, seeking after truth,  who was attracted by the wrong message of Islamic extremism.  From what Earle has said, his motivation in writing it was sympathy with the parents, more than JWL.  What he saw on the news was a tall, skinny kid, bound to a board, and it reminded him of his own son, Justin, who was struggling with addiction.  That is anything but a journalistic view.

  23. V.... P....

I went out with someone I went to school with after some persistent asking in spite of the fact that he was a fox news obsessed junkie of conservatism. At the stop light before we reached my apartment complex this song came on on the mix CD he'd put in back at the restaurant. I was totally shocked, having never heard this before but correctly discerning what it was about, that he had put that on there. I said "This sounds like John Walker Lindh" and he said "No, it's just a song about him." That was cute. I was never sure if he was joking when he said that or not. Of course, come to find out later he's just an extremist who identifies with hyperconservative ideology in any of its forms, especially when espoused by a privileged white male such as himself. He died of a drug overdose a couple of years ago.

    V.... P....

Nice of you to shit on his grave.  Hope you feel good about yourself for it.

    V.... P....

at least he went out without a bang. unless he was banging drugs.. shit.. I feel like it was funnier before I started typing.

    V.... P....

He tried to smother me with a pillow. He thought he did because he didn't understand the difference between the person your trying to kill passing out and the person you're trying to kill dying. I hope you feel good about yourself.

    V.... P....

Also, Mark, you like how I love this song but want to make it clear your liking of how much I love this song is directed at someone else? That's weird.

    V.... P....

he sounds like a very conflicted and unhappy person. I didn't find anything you wrote disrespectful, just honest.

    Wow great.hands up

  25. w.... ....

go fuck yourself hick. mpallouez your just another closed minded uneducated dumb shit, but... in the words of my namesake " I know not as for other men but as for me  give me liberty or give me death".  and to quote another great patriot and founding father I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it. You sir are un-American. learn your history before you spout of about being a traitor we are a nation of traitors founded by people who gave up their country for your dumb ass to criticize FREE THOUGHT and FREEDOM  of religion, or better yet freedom from religion.

    w.... ....

+wcarloswilliams wow this song went over your head lol

  26. m.... ....

they should have shot the fuck in the head, the fucking traitor. earl is a stupid lib fuck for writing a song about this piece of shit. oh he poor kid. hat a crock of shit.

    m.... ....

+mpallouez Obviously you didnt understand the songs message, but hey, critical thinking isnt for everyone

  27. Y.... H....

Humanity is one and shouldn't be torn up by religion, nationality, language or other forms of identity. Can we accept this as a basic principle and pursue our different faiths with the common goal of preserving humanity as a praise to the one whose name can't be spoken? This song saddens me great deal. JWL is the victim not to his belief but to the belief that faiths are seperated from humanity.

    Y.... H....

Steven, you can't use reason to argue with bigotry...bigotry is not based on reason.

    Y.... H....

@Claudia He it's not about bigotry- it's about the reality of the HATE FILLED suddith, sura and koran documents. i've read them. you should too.

i have no desire to support a "religion" that demands the installation of a SEPARATE LEGAL SYSTEM that is based on islam............ in whatever countries muslims live in. that means EVERYONE should abide by sharia law that makes a woman's word 1/5 of a man's- a woman rape victim needs to find FOUR witnesses who will testify that she was raped OR that woman will be sentenced to THE SENTENCE OF A RAPIST.

all of the documents of islam that codify pedophilia, corporal punishment, rape, beating women, female genital mutilation, etc.......

so in summation, it's not bigoted to dislike a CULT that is functionally a complete political and military SYSTEM that is in and of itself a rolling humanitarian disaster. opposing such a system is what's called "the right thing to do"

you lymies have a wonderful time with all your existing and new non-assimilating muslims and i hear they're getting a lot of white trash junkies to "convert" while in jail- that's a nice final touch on the doom of western civilization in europe. enjoy!

    Y.... H....

postaltraining There you go again....Talking complete bollocks. You tell lie after lie and when challenged, rather than prove your point with tangible evidence (as you've been repeatedly asked to), you instead, change the subject and talk more bollocks.
I'll prove it. Are you focused and ready? Can you put your money where your mouth is? Are you capable of rational debate? Here goes (one more time!). Please prove from the Quran and hadith that a woman who is raped need produce four witnesses as you allege above?

I swear to God you cannot and never will be able to. Rather you're simply a bigot willing to lie against those you hate. Not interested in truth, justice and fairness yet hypocritically harping on about the lack of values of others.

    Y.... H....

Claudia He Thanks Claudia, you're right. I've been through this lots of times with lots of people. It's the age of the internet troll, where people hiding behind computer screens can abuse whoever they like.
Having said that, I'm just having a little fun. Thanks again

    Y.... H....

postaltraining just as I thought....you were unable to answer my question again

  28. W.... R....

Mmmmmm to far out for me. I love steve, but I cant allow this ..... I understand, but I cant do it......sorry.

  29. a.... m....

I am a Muslim born with it, but I have not been able to provide the best for Islam

  30. a.... m....

I cry to hear a song about jhon walker Lindh

  31. B.... R....

This song is awesome! The guitar is absolutely amazing

  32. e.... ....

I keep coming back to this song again and again. Steve Earles history with drugs and addiction doesn't surprise me at all, his level of empathy is mind blowing and that must hurt him like hell, how many artists can do this? This is the pinnacle of singer songwriting talent, the story telling, the sensitivity, the empathy, the hidden nuances. What made him even think to do this? His managed to pull a story out of all the biase and fear and make it personal to his subject not just a load of white noise about preconceived notions.

    e.... ....

@Peter Gerstenzang A little late responding here - but when JWL was captured we were not at war. It was a month after 9/11, and we had CIA advisers there, but were not at war and he was in no way defecting. It was an internal Afghan war in which we took a side. I think you are right that his parents were ineffective, but he went to the Middle East because he was attracted to a religious tradition. No reason to keep your child from exploring other religions. He was then radicalized by very persuasive propaganda. I certainly don't think he is a hero or symbol, but this song does not make him a hero or symbol, either. It does use this particular case to make a protest about the way jingoistic media reporting used him as a symbol. That picture was plastered all over the place to give Americans a feeling that we were in some sense getting satisfaction for 9/11.

    e.... ....

oustanding, sir. you captured feelings of mine that I never have to try to put into words. thank you.

    e.... ....

try having kids that disagree with you before you start taking shots.

    e.... ....

same as the process of writing any other song i guess

    e.... ....

    Very well put. Bravo Sir!

  33. l.... ....

this song explain better than anything why, today, many young kids join IS in Iraq and Syria. Thanks, Steve.

    l.... ....

I think some Americans and British men are tired of having the gay shit pushed on them and political correctness

    l.... ....

Nobody is forcing the gay lifestyle on you, you fat turd. They are pushing for fear-free existence. The fact that you think that justifies violence makes you just as rotten as the terrorists. Nobody is coming to put a dick in your ass. Throwing gays off buildings is unacceptable and those who disagree should be bombed to bits. We don't need people like that. SEE WHAT I DID THERE? I'm acting just as irrational and retarded as you. See yourself yet, douche?

    l.... ....

@Shit House Rat At least you acknowledge the strong correlation between the belief systems of Radical Islam Extremists and the Conservatism.

  34. H.... M....

    This song is awesome lol

  35. e.... ....

John Walker Lynd was a fool of a kid, from a very dysfunctional family who allowed their minor child to travel alone to an Arab country...just because he wanted to, to study Arabic. He pretended to be an African-American on the internet, he could not did not want to accept who he was and so created a false personna which he did his best to translate into the real world.
He knew nothing about anything and got himself into a heap of a mess and legal trouble, and there he sits now in jail, probably just as confused and dysfunctional as he ever was. Shame on his parents for allowing their own dysfunction to ruin their son's life.

    e.... ....

glad its so clear to you.

  36. E.... C....

La Mejor Cancion de Steve Earle..VIVAAA!!!!

  37. m.... s....

    really strong piece, mr. earle

  38. B.... ....

Muslims have no more propensity to violence than anyone else. Theyve had colonialism, neo colonialism - and theyre cursed with The Strategic Resource that everyone wants. Oil. Theyve taken a load of shit from us since 1915. there are people here who care nothing for music, they just want to express racism and bigotry. Shame on them

    B.... ....

@Andreas Iversen when are you changing your surname to breivik?

    B.... ....

+Boviss1 Thank You for elucidating the truth.

    B.... ....

We sow chaos, then howl about terror and refugees.

    B.... ....

What's their land doing over our oil !

  39. a.... ....

Haha, to think that I once liked Steve Earle's music. Should have called this song "Michael Spann's Blues." This American Talib should never see the light of day.

  40. S.... ....

+darlincommitme - Hitler was a *Christian*, not an atheist. Nazi Germany was a *Christian* nation. The Nazis wore belt buckles that declared "Gott Mitt Uns" (God Is With Us). Hitler was also a creationist who rejected hard scientific facts like evolution. Like most religious zealots, he used the science he liked to further his own goals and rejected that which contradicted his worldview. That doesn't make science evil - it is a tool just like a gun or a hammer. The Nazis' hatred and persecution of the Jews (and ultimately, the holocaust) was rooted in over a thousand years of Christian anti-semitism in Germany and Europe.

    S.... ....

@Syrinx69  You couldn't be further from the truth, Hitler was a hardcore atheist with a penchant for dabbling in the occult who idolized Nietzsche. "Crack open a history book" and find out for yourself.

    S.... ....

LOL Hitler wasn't an atheist, fool. Atheists don't wear "God With Us" on their belt buckles or claim they are doing the work of THE LORD. He was a Christian, and nothing you or any of your little Bible buddies say will change reality.

BTW I *HAVE* cracked open a history book - MANY in fact, and REAL ONES. History was one of my majors.

    S.... ....

LOL.. sorry kid, but the pathetic revisionists are in your camp. Again, atheists do not go to church, have the support of the church, and claim to be doing the work of the Lord. NOr do they burn books (especially ones on evolution) Nor do they hate Jews. That is a distinctly CHRISTIAN attribute that has historical proof backing it up.

“Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord.”  -ADOLPH HITLER (Mein Kampf)

""My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter.  It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and summoned men to fight against them" -ADOLPH HITLER

" In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and adders.  How terrific was His fight for the world against the Jewish poison.  To-day, after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before the fact that it was for this that He had to shed His blood upon the Cross.  "  - ADOLPH HITLER

(Just a few examples. YES these truly are the words of an atheist. ROFL!)

    S.... ....

Then how do you explain an atheist like Hitler? You're just going to have to come to terms with the indisputable fact that he WAS an atheist that dabbled in the occult. Any claim at all of being a Christian is the same thing as modern  right-wingers claiming to be Christians when they are in fact atheists as well, Christploitationism.
The sooner you accept the fact that Hitler was an atheist, the happier you'll be.

No Christian, I repeat NO Christian has EVER burned books or hated Jews, those people are called Christploitationists, atheists who claim to be Christian in order to attempt to justify their evil world view to people. You KNOW what I say to be true.

    S.... ....

your using the belt buckle as an underpinning for your assertions seems a bit simplistic. the GMU belt buckle was worn in WW1 as well, and that was the war AH actually participated in.allegedly(wiki), GMU was used as a password in the thirty years war by protestants. which was why the prussian army, perhaps, chose to display it. as for the bavarian army, dont know what they had on their kit, but that was the army AH enlisted in.generally, the nazis were anti-intellectual, read rosenburg, or better yet, LTI. although nazis benefitted tecnologically from wissenschaft, they didnt exactly embrace it. using calipers and lombrosian typing to identify human "sub" types, is, at best, typical of nineteenth ethnic, racial, and moral investigation. as far as racial (if jews are a race) persecution goes many leaders have throughout history used antipathy for xenoi as a rallying issue. perhaps some of the nazis had some attachment to "racial" solutions, but the reason for that would be likely fond in those individuals raising and early history. in a time of upheaval and change attention must be given to what benefits policies and their implementation confer.indeed, in any investigation of human society.

  41. A.... ....

A true hero.George Bush should be tied up like that...

  42. E.... T....

    cezakallahu hayran ceza

  43. F.... B....

So this is the great country of America, I think they've lost their way.

  44. d.... ....

As Bob says - secular ideologies and appeal to reason are just as likely to result in violence. Besides those Bob mentioned, Hitler was an athiest and his regime relied heavily on science to promote ethnic cleansing. (They did use the state church, but that was not the heart of the philosophy.) Mao and Stalin, some forms of nationalism, or, going further back, the French Revolution, were rationalist justifications for war and violence aagainst particular groups.

  45. c.... ....

    IDIOT !!

  46. l.... ....

    Agreed!

  47. H.... ....

just that, religious beliefs, that's how. usually the most easily-adopted and lasting justification a country uses to bend their own laws and ideals to win a conflict. you kinda have to worship something to be that irrational.

  48. l.... ....

This is a very touching and sad song.......How can a supposed God loving country do this to any young man....torture is against the law; or once was! After Bush #2's reign, the Geneva Convention rules no longer applied to our country. This kid's beliefs were "not American! OMG!

  49. M.... ....

Walker was fighting in the civil war between the Northern Alliance and Taliban. The Taliban who incidentally were originally helped and financed by the USA during the Russian occupation. He was made a scapegoat as he was American.

  50. m.... ....

"John Phillip Walker Lindh is a United States citizen who was captured as an enemy combatant during the United States' 2001 invasion of Afghanistan in November 2001."

  51. C.... J....

I think you miss the point of the song. He is arrested and tortured in the Land of the Free because of his appearance and beliefs. It is a message for reform, not a rebel yell.

  52. G.... ....

Rebels and outlaws are who built this great nation we so dearly love.

  53. b.... h....

i am not talking about steve i am talking about john

  54. n.... ....

Steve Earle is not a Muslim, nor would he agree that people should die for Islam. He is a pacifist and a universalist. This song is critiquing the way the US government handled the Walker case and trying to understand what led Walker to the decisions he made, which Earle would not support.

  55. B.... ....

Bush was affiliated with bin Laden, and had received his personal fortune from bin Laden associates. In fact he locked down aviation for all but potential Saudi witnesses & informants, who he FORCED to flee so they couldn't be interrogated. The Tora Bora exit also seems fishy, y'think? The right loves Bush 'cause he hates Americans & loves our enemies. The right hates Obama because he had bin Laden killed & got a lot of Americans out of harm's way in Iraq.

  56. b.... h....

this is the miracle of our beloved prophet Muhammad saws that in this age of so called enlightenment many many people want to die for Islam ,no matter from where they belong. ISLAM IS NOT JUST FOR ARABS BUT FOR EVERY HUMAN BEING.

    b.... h....

Muhammad was an illiterate desert dweller with delusions. Allah is imagery and made up (just like the Easter bunny) and isn't great at all. Never was either.

  57. n.... ....

You do understand that this song is NOT casting Walker as a hero, right? Earle sees him as a confused young man. He has empathy, but doesn't agree with him.

  58. e.... ....

Now, I get the Idea ... thanks

  59. d.... ....

I understand the tradition of recitation of the Qur'an... I think we just disagree on the definition of chant. The "devout voice" is a sing-song voice, which I would call chanting. There does not have to be a melody to call it a chant. There is a similar tradition of reciting Psalms in some Christian devotion, which is referred to as chanting.

  60. T.... ....

    Right-wing idiots suck.

  61. T.... ....

I bet when Johnny Cash heard this, he smiled.

It takes courage to defend invented right-wing bogeymen. Johnny did it, and Steve does it. There aren't many more with that kind of courage anymore. If that isn't an indication our country is in trouble, I don't know what is.

  62. e.... ....

there is no music or singing
it's just READING the Holly Quran using a devouted voice
    But thanks any way

  63. d.... ....

Chanting is rhythmic singing of sacred words or phrases, so the imam is chanting the verses from the Qur'an.

  64. e.... ....

    it is not a chanting
it is verses of the Holly Quran (words of ALLAh)
although you can't understand Arabic, but it touched your heart
    Peace

  65. C.... C....

why do people think this mocks jesus?

  66. J.... W....

    Gives me the chills.

  67. l.... ....

His role was not to take arms against his own countrymen. He was merely assisting The Taliban against The Northern Alliance... y'know the way the Soviet Union assisted the Viet Cong/North Vietnamese. His cell is well deserved.

  68. r.... ....

@Bluenose2 I feel exactly the same. And I like knowing that there are others like me

  69. b.... ....

Walker had a better idea why he was fighting then the Americans in the US military; the only Americans who knew why we invaded Iraq and continue to prop up a corrupt regime in Afgan are there the ones that were against it then and now; as for Spann, like the rest of the spooks he was part merc, part psycho

  70. g.... ....

    god and country,in that order.

  71. y.... a....

john is exatcly wht steve pictures him n his song, thnks steve, u r brave

  72. T.... ....

@pjandy77 He was taking up arms against Afghans, then was put on the front line when USA came in and he was threatened with death if he left the front. Not defending him or agreeing with his actions, just saying i dont believe he went over there just to fight his own countrymen,

  73. b.... I....

    This is hero

  74. J.... V....

John Walker and I may not see eye to eye, but goddamn if he doesn't have every right to his own opinion and to stand up and fight for it if he believes it is right.

  75. j.... d....

yeah go fuck yourself jtmoore, you moron.

  76. s.... ....

@jtmoore292007 Are the Iraqi people on their way to a free Democratic society!!!?? What planet are you from?
You mean like the "free" American society with the two party system, were the one with most of the money gets to become "king" By the way, everybody knows that the US have financed the war with Chinese money. Why not put forces into North Korea ey?!!

  77. F.... D....

    @klepetar He is no traitor.

  78. k.... ....

this dude is a traitor.. point to line!

  79. a.... ....

    John, you are hero!

  80. T.... ....

  86. G.... G....

    Steve Earle writes amazing songs

  87. P.... J....

John Walker Lindh proved what William Carlos Williams once wrote: "The pure products of America go crazy." Steve Earle only reminded us of that truth.

Just had fun reading all the comments. So many ignorant angry people!
    Sad but amusing too.
The evil and poison of one is the lifeblood of the other. And vice versa.
And there arose from the earth a race of armed men and they began exterminating each other. Then it was quiet again.

  89. B.... ....

Great Man. Top Song. God Bless Him

  90. H.... P....

Oh my god sone of these comments are unable to put into words, seriously people I mean just because you don't think the same way doesn't mean you have seniority over any other race or religion. And it's not was Steve is trying to say in this song. If you'd get past your ignorance I think you'd understand.

  91. d.... ....

    GOD BLESS HIM

  92. B.... W....

I'm not gonna take either side, but I will say this is a good, well written song that makes one think. And man, that chanting at the end gives me chills!

  93. j.... c....

There's all kind of fucked up violent shit and all kinds of beautiful, peaceful messages in the bible and Quran. Which you choose to believe in and live by is wholly up to you.

  94. y.... a....

Your father comes out of the closet when you're a teenage boy and that's not going to f***k you up??? He was obviously searching for *something.* Prove he attacked US soldies (as opposed to Northern Alliance fighters.)

  97. R.... ....

if there were just more like him
if we would all stand together and fight for the freedom of our bothers and sisters
