Steve Earle - Dixieland Lyrics

I am Kilrain and I'm a fightin' man and I come from County Clare
And the Brits would hang me for a Fenian so I took me leave of there
And I crossed the ocean in the "Arrianne" the vilest tub afloat
And the captain's brother was a railroad man and he met us the boat
So I joined up with the 20th Maine like I said my friend I'm a fighting man
And we're marchin' south in the pouring rain and we're all goin' down to Dixieland

I am Kilrain of the 20th Maine and we fight for Chamberlain
'Cause he stood right with us when the Johnnies came like a banshee on the wind
When the smoke cleared out of Gettysburg many a mother wept
For many a good boy died there, sure, and the air smelted just like death

I am Kilrain of the 20th Maine and I'd march to hell and back again
For Colonel Joshua Chamberlain - we're all goin' down to Dixieland

I am Kilrain of the 20th Maine and I damn all gentlemen
Whose only worth is their father's name and the sweat of a workin' man
Well we come from the farms and the city streets and a hundred foreign lands
And we spilled our blood in the battle's heat
Now we're all Americans

I am Kilrain of the 20th Maine and did I tell you friend I'm a fightin' man
And I'll not be back this way again, 'cause we're all goin' down to Dixieland

That is one of the most patriotic damn verses ever written. Thank you, Steve Earle, for writing it. What a great song.

Go ahead and abandon your Southern roots.

Steve has always supported the down trodden and oppressed, he’s not going to sing songs glorifying slavers and the poor whites who drank up their snake oil.

    g.... g....

Hayes Hartman It wasn't about slavery,it was about the north trying to force the south to belp pay the norths debt to the bankers

@Hayes Hartman - need to learn true history.
Name any other country that ended slavery by means of war?
Abraham Lincoln was a tyrant and racist.

During his famous debates with Sen. Stephen Douglas, Lincoln explained to the crowd: “I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races … I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races from living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be a position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.”

Steve looks so much better here in 2004 than he did in 1997 at farm aid. Good to see. Love his music.

He always looks great "in between wives"

I thought you were exaggerating, kilkee526, so I clicked over. It's probably been five years since somebody reminded me of "Sister Golden Hair." What'd I ever do to you?

yeah, Steve Earle knows of what he sings.

This song is brilliant. The version with Del McCoury on "The Mountain" is more spirited, but at least as good. The Irish had to fight their way into being accepted into British and American societies. Part of me wants to punch those people in the face, but ultimately it's really about accepting things you can't change. Great song.

It's so crazy to see how much Steve and his son, Justin Townes Earle, share the same body language and carry themselves in the same way on stage.

    I've never noticed it before.

    T.... ....

Justine has a good voice, but he can't touch his father's.
