Steppenwolf - Jupiter Child Lyrics

The one who reads the stars has told me
Why you're not like everyone
Your father is a fiery wizard
He travels all around the sun
No one ever knew just where you came from
Orphan girl, you grew up wild
Your father left you on the way home
Yes, girl, you're a Jupiter's child

Wish I knew the way back
Back to where you came
Gladly I would leave here
Take another name
I can tell by you, it must be true
It's up on Jupiter's face
They don't embrace our own disgrace
Somebody, help me off this place

You never really quite belonged
Like a pearl among the swine
You tried to live the way we do
Hoping you would learn in time
But, mankind, with all it's virtue
Will soon make you lose your smile
On this earth, with all it's madness
Heaven help a Jupiter's child

Wish I knew the way back
Back to where you came
Gladly I would leave here
Take another name
I can tell by you, it must be true
It's up on Jupiter's face
They don't embrace our own disgrace
Somebody, get me off this place

The radios always been like that. Just burns me up. According to the radio Mississippi Queen is the only song mountain did, where in American band is the only song Grand Funk did. I can promise you you will never hear the ostrich on the radio is too heavy for them

  8. D.... S....

Steppinwolf came from a time when bands had their own individual style. Thats what makes the music great.

  18. R.... D....

Most critics trashed this album, but I always love it. Even John Kay said he didn't care for it. I find it to be a strange and wonderful album.

  19. G.... B....

At your birthday party!!! Killer LP

  20. A.... ....

If institutions like the rock n roll hall of fame were really an honor of true greatness in a bands contributions to the music world, why are these guys not inducted? Along with Foghat, Blue Oyster Cult, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Humble Pie, Uriah Heep, Robin Trower, Pat Travers on and on yet people like Madonna are? I guess I don't get it.....🤔

  21. F.... Q....

Another great Steppenwolf classic. Talented musicians.

  22. J.... Z....

    Love me some Jupiter Child!

  23. K.... K....

  26. J.... S....

    Oh, yeah!

  27. T.... T....

John Kay's unmistakable gravelly growl. Often copied but never equalled!

  28. B.... T....

I loved this whole album along with the Second and had some great hash and great acid. I like hash more that pot at that time. Now that it's legal in Canada I don't what pot is like now, but then I can't smoke any more because of asthma and emphysema from smoking hash and cigarettes for fifty years

  29. J.... C....

    yeah like screaming night hog

  30. j.... m....

    Best album of 1969!!!!!

  31. M.... S....

No one has ever sounded like them, before or after. John Kay's voice, biting political and moral issue lyrics. Grungy bluesy sound with that dirty B3. But largely forgotten. To me they are one of the top ten bands in the history of rock music. So many great great songs!

  32. D.... S....

I AM GLAD THAT I CAN SAY I SAW JOHN KAY AND STEPPENWOLF!!!!!!

    D.... S....

I saw them in a barn with a bunch of bikers when I was 16.... needless to say... frickin awesome and 3 dog night was there too... I brought 3 pounds of weed, 200 hits of acid and nothing was left when I left!

  33. S.... L....

I've been listening to this song since I was 15 and I still am not bored with it!

  34. J.... W....

So if we're looking at the photo the guy at left is mr killer bassist Nick St Nicholas. Best bass player ever. Ok, just remember that.

    J.... W....

Hey Jeff, I so agree!! He inspired me to pick up the bass back in '70 back when I was a wee lad at 13 when I got my first Steppenwolf album "Live". Been playing along ever since then.

  35. J.... C....

  44. D.... G....

Why didn't these guys make it into the Rock N Roll Hall of fame yet???????? Politics as usual I'm guessing within the board- So rap crap makes it before this band???

  45. D.... H....

Funky shit right here brother. love the old music did when it first came out and still like it today..
    ✌😎👍

    D.... H....

This has become my favorite SW song. Easy to play with a classic rock backbone. Rather hear this than what's on the radio which you all know. Anyway, the band I'm in is taking this one on along with Lawdy Mama and Rock Me. When the guys get the feel for SW it's on to Monster. I bought SW Live in the sixth grade....1973 ish. Love it all more now. Now I can play some of it. Great stuff and totally underrated.

  46. S.... F....

Steppenwolf Best Band From the City of Angels.Saw them in 1968 in Sacramento Ca.

  47. A.... B....

whos the mad stick man here? great song but the drums tho

    A.... B....

    Jerry Edmonton on drums!

    A.... B....

Jerry Edmonton as many other drummers of this time of this time and era was a big influence on me as a very very young drummer! And have had John Kay sign the first and second album for me, my favorite albums by Steppenwolf

  48. S.... F....

An L.A. Band with integrity and talent. Saw them in 1968 and Three Dog Night another L.A. band opened for them. Great Concert by both bands.

  49. S.... B....

These guys should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Madonna is in the hall and she doesn't even play an instrument and is not even rock and roll as far as I'm concerned.

  50. I.... E....

just saw Steppenwolf two days ago in la and they were great....as bad ass as always!

  51. U.... ....

Yeah Mark, idiots all. So many other great songs.

  52. J.... N....

This song marked the time in my life that I realised that the B side of a 45 was where it was at.

  53. S.... B....

My favorite Steppenwolf song. Why are these guys not in the Hall of Fame? Madonna is in and they are not! They play rock and roll. I don't consider Madonna rock and roll.

  54. M.... W....

there was solo album John Kay put out in the early 80s....Unsung Heroes...Untold Stories....all I need is a guitar and keyboards and I get to play in the band....

    M.... W....

actually it was called, 'forgotten songs and and unsung heroes."

  55. P.... S....

    Yes girl, you're a Jupiter's child.

  56. s.... r....

Have to wonder if some of the inspiration for the plot in the movie Jupiter Rising came from this great 'wolf song.

  57. D.... M....

Mark I'm in total agreement with you man This happens to be my favorite Wolf song trying to get my band to have a listen man' O and I don't listen to the radio man. they beat you over head with the same stuff day in and day out.

  58. t.... ....

Rock me .. Jupiters child.. Move over .. If I did that to you.. Hey lawdy Mama ... Ride with me ... So many other really good songs that never got air play, shame on these Radio DJs thinking only of .. Magic Carpit Ride or Born to be Wild.. You go John Kay I'd wish I was your manager .. I put you where you really should be..a great recognise Rock STAR ! See Nick Jagger can fill them up!

  59. t.... ....

STEPPENWOLF.... Right on Fantastic Rock!! Just listen to how their rock is very Organic and funky, great style! Love The STEPPENWOLF .. What a great name and it fit the attitude and their musical expression... I'm a big STEPPENWOLF fan since their first album back in 1968 .. I was 13 but has a great ear for music.

  60. C.... S....

I KNOW THEY NEED ONE RADIO HERE ON THE EAST COAST TOO …….BUT, I THINK THESE SONGS ARE JUST A LITTLE TOO WILD FOR TODAY'S STANDARDS ! LIKE "LINK WRAY'S RUMBLE" IT WAS BANNED ON ALOT OF RADIO STATIONS BACK IN THE DAY. THAT'S ALRIGHT. THERE ON YOUTUBE 24-7, BUT PUT AIR A RADIO STATION ON THE WEEKENDS IN THE EVENINGS WOULD BE GREAT TOO ! THINK ABOUT IT? SCOBIEAKALINKWRAYBAND Laurel, Md.

  68. L.... S....

STEPPENWOLF, one of the most rockingest bands to ever grace the face of planet Earth! "They don't embrace our own disgrace, somebody get me off of this place." Had a chance to see Kay play in Reno, but didn't take it, what a damn fool am I!!! 50s, 60s, and '70s Rock forever!

Saw Steppenwolf in 1968 at the Sacramento Auditorium and another new band called

    S.... F....

Saw them front Jefferson Airplane in Atlanta 1970

  77. z.... l....

I had this album so many years ago and I lost it during a move...! shame on me!

  78. A.... Y....

One of my favorite Steppenwolf songs.

    A.... Y....

    Mine too!

  79. B.... F....

This one is so fantastic because the music does actually sound sort of awful, odd, and cosmic...especially at 1:15 with the organ bit that sounds like a horror movie.

    B.... F....

You can thank Goldy McJohn who played a Lowery outfitted with a Leslie speaker. Many used to think he was using a modified Vox or a Moog Syth. But in reality he created his own method of of key reverb smashing of keys to get different inflections. Not only did he play his organ – he played at it creating all kinds of musical effects that inspired and defined a generation of rock organists

    B.... F....

    Thanks for that. Interesting.

    B.... F....

Yeah, I am a Big John Kay and Steppenwolf fan. I was 15 when this onecame out, so telling on myself. LOL You know he was also in a group called The Sparrow, before he transformed it into Steppenwolf. Some of their music was really bluesy rock. Check it. https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox/15818336f14b722b

    B.... F....

    Thanks.

    B.... F....

Actrually most people think he played a Hammond organ thru a leslie

  80. M.... B....

Why can't "classic" rock stations play something like this other than Born To Be Wild or Magic Carpet Ride over and over and over again?? Great songs but come on Steppenwolf recorded more than just 2 songs!!!

    M.... B....

Classic Rock stations have been a bane to great music. This is just one example of overlooked great songs.. They just don't get it.....TJ STRUSKA

    M.... B....

no !more songs i im french i know steppenwolf since 68

    M.... B....

many many more intelligent group but no recognisance

    M.... B....

  81. L.... ....

Steppenwolf; often imitated, but never duplicated.

    L.... ....

  82. m.... m....

  83. l.... ....

I remember those psychedelic lights just like in this video back in high school. We had a dance every Saturday night. I'm from the class of 1970.

  84. K.... J....

Is that...JOHNNY MATHIS...singing 'lead'? (L-O-L)! Great band. Great song.

  85. J.... M....

This is just so frickin' .. organic ! A punchy, swirling, churning work of rock art ! :)

    J.... M....

Hey John, you might like a tune I put up here called Love Me Like a Locust. Hell, just give it a listen. The track is me singing and playing all instruments. All the best, man.

    J.... M....

..... "Love Me Like a Locust" . a damn great entitlement for a song ;-)

    J.... M....

Thanks Johnny. Glad you see some value in it. When you get a chance, visit my website joemystery.com You may like some other stuff I have up there. Best to you and yours and thanks much for the shout out.

    J.... M....

I love this song and the Steppenwolf Style and music Sound, very original! yes Organic!

    J.... M....

  86. j.... m....

    great biker band! steppenwolf rocked!!!!!

  87. J.... M....

they defined their time even with numerous lineup changes ✌..

  88. p.... c....

Another solid tune by a great band virtually forgotten today. This was, believe it or not a B-side of one of their hits.

    p.... c....

    Rock me

  89. r.... m....

Jerry was an unsung hero of this band. Most people don't pay attention to the drums because of lyrics. The man had some chops. Steppenwolf, my 2nd favorite band of all time depending on my mood.

    r.... m....

I heard or read years ago that Born to be Wild was actually about a kid graduating high school and riding in a Ford Falcon. Anyone else heard that? Heavy Metal Thunder?

    r.... m....

No, according to Bonfire in one of his interviews on YT, when his band The Sparrow landed in LA, he got a car and headed for the hills. Whilst driving, a thunder storm came up, thus the thunder in the lyric. Heavy Metal, he says, just came from a category in the periodic table. So there are no hidden meanings. 'Head out on the highway' is just him out in the car.... The song was only referred to as a biker tune after the movie 'Easy Rider', in which it featured, after which all sorts of crazy meanings were assigned to it. I remember when it first came out; it, along with the Amboy Dukes 'Journey to the Center of the Mind' (w/a young Ted Nugent on guitar) was the coolest thing on the radio. And it's still as cool as ever almost 50 years later.

    r.... m....

Wayne. Why would you even mention that no talent Ted NOgent in a Steppenwolf song post that features the one and only Michael Monarch on guitar? Shame on you..LOL!!!

    r.... m....

Yes, I understand what you're saying. The unfortunate thing is that Nugent was very cool and a wicked player back in his Amboy Dukes days. Their 'Journey to the Centre of the Mind' and Steppenwolf's 'Born to be Wild' were hits around the same time (late '68), and the album that followed (minus the single but with new singer Rusty Day, later with Cactus), 'Migration', was great. Ditto the one that followed, 'Rock Bottom - Marriage on the Rocks', though things were getting a bit odd in the musical sense. The irony is that Nugent was the 'straight' one...didn't partake in the drink or drugs, yet he turned out to be such a weird one.

    r.... m....

Maxoman427 Uh, yeah, no. Nugent was one of the world's great guitarists when he was in his prime. Monarch is underrated today, to be sure, but he's still not on Nugent's level.

  90. L.... D....

It's a wonder i made it out alive, my head never forgot the truth. just listen folks it's still there.
Bob De 72 yrs. and still, will never forget.

    L.... D....

72 and listening to Steppenwolf on youtube. You are the coolest chick ever!

orange sunshine, purple micro-dot, 4 way red pyramid, or chocolate mescaline.

    R.... H....

you have a point, but the red pyramid i mentioned was actually window pane, four small triangles shaped like a pyramid that could sit on the tip of your little finger!  Best trip I ever took.

  92. J.... C....

Edmonton's chops are fantastic on this song. This shows how elite a rock drummer this guy was. There are not many better.

    J.... C....

Yes, he was in the studio so they put him to work! Just awesome timing, like a machine, never sped up or slowed down, just right on time all the time.

    J.... C....

Jennetta Keizer where was this at? Kay always approached things as a pro, I'm not doubting you but hard to believe he would have gone on stage in that condition seeing how he was working hard to restore the bands name?

    J.... C....

Fantastic drummer! I really mean fantastic.. The Brother is passed, but can see drumming in the videos and see His nice Style and supurb timing... And His lead vocals on the song "If I did that to you"... I'm a Big Steppenwolf fan .. I was 13 in 1968 and much understood Sound and lyric .. ..THE STEPPENWOLF! Love it!

    J.... C....

You might be interested in a bit of their history. Jerry and Dennis McCrohan came from my hometown, Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, where their father Owen owned the local dance hall, the Jubilee Pavilion. The group got its start with another lead singer, who used the stage name "Jack London." They released a few 45's as Jack London & the Sparrows, charting locally in the mid-60's, and eventually an album of British-sounding rock on Canadian Capitol. (Capitol Records had a series of catalog numbers in the 60's for Canadian-only releases.) "Jack" left (to become an investment advisor, I was once told), and John Kay (from Scarborough, Toronto's east-most suburb) stepped in. They recorded a few sides for Columbia with that line up as The Sparrows, but went nowhere with those releases. (Columbia would cobble together an album of this material some years later when Steppenwolf became a big band, but none was issued at the time.) Their move to California - something many Canadian bands of the time needed to do to take that "next step" - was their break. Dennis (aka Mars Bonfire) wrote "Born to be Wild," and the rest of the history you already know.

    J.... C....

absolutely! Jerry is ,was and always will be one the greats of rock drumming. A big reason why Steppenwolf were as great as they were.

  93. M.... ....

Although not everyones fave Steppenwolf album, it is absolutely mine. IMHO there is not a bad song on it, and of course Jupiter Child (NO "S" IN JUPITER PLEASE) is a standout piece of work. I was cutting my teeth on rock as a young British teenager when this came out, loved it from first play, but got some funny looks from my then girlfriend and her sister,,,, they were totally pop mainstream,,,,needless to say, it didnt last!! Another band I loved back then was Spooky Tooth, their Spooky Two album is a tour de force. Still play both albums regularly today. JUST FANTASTIC.

    M.... ....

'Where'...are you getting the information that it's JUPITER CHILD (vs) JUPITER'S CHILD? I can (distinctly) 'hear' John Kay saying JUPITER'S.

    M.... ....

Kodi. I bought the original album when it came out in 1969, the song is
listed on the album as "Jupiter Child". I also have a couple of
Steppenwolf compilation albums, and agian the song title appears with no "s " in Jupiter on both of them. There is also a John Kay tv documentary I have seen where he clearly talks about the song "Jupiter Child", simple as that!

    M.... ....

@MrSamFerguson Then 'WHY' is he saying JUPITER'S instead of JUPITER (in the SONG)?

    M.... ....

He`s not, you are mis-hearing the lyric.

    M.... ....

    +MrSamFerguson You're 'RIGHT'!!!
