Stephen Stills - Wooden Ships Lyrics

If you smile at me, I will understand
'Cause that is something everybody everywhere does
in the same language.

I can see by your coat, my friend,
you're from the other side,
There's just one thing I got to know,
Can you tell me please, who won?

Say, can I have some of your purple berries?

Yes, I've been eating them for six or seven weeks now,
haven't got sick once.

Probably keep us both alive.

Wooden ships on the water, very free and easy,
Easy, you know the way it's supposed to be,
Silver people on the shoreline, let us be,
Talkin' 'bout very free and easy...
Horror grips us as we watch you die,
All we can do is echo your anguished cries,
Stare as all human feelings die,
We are leaving - you don't need us.

Go, take your sister then, by the hand,
lead her away from this foreign land,
Far away, where we might laugh again,
We are leaving - you don't need us.

And it's a fair wind, blowin' warm,
Out of the south over my shoulder,
Guess I'll set a course and go...

Absolutely brilliant Stephen Stills will always be in my top 5 artist, I've got every one of his vinyls and all of CRNY, this version of "Wooden Ships" is a legends song, this has always been my favourite version (ever since it was released in 1975) and is an absolute enigma of what rock southern riff style should be and Stephen Stills has and always will be right up there with the legends of all time! Can't get enough of this song and this “Stephen Stills Live double album” recorded at the “Auditorium Theatre, Chicago” in 1975 with the Electric side and the Acoustic side on that good old Atlantic legend label of green white and red! WOW it brings back some great memories!!!

These are all the people that have contributed to these 2 great and legend albums:

    • Acoustic Guitar – Stephen Stills (tracks: B1 to B5)

    • Bass, Vocals – Kenny Passarelli (tracks: A1 to A4)

    • Design [Cover] – Michael John Bowen

    • Drums – Russ Kunkel (tracks: A1 to A4)

    • Electric Guitar – Stephen Stills (tracks: A1 to A4)

    • Electric Guitar, Vocals – Donnie Dacus (tracks: A1 to A4)

    • Keyboards – Jerry Aiello (tracks: A1 to A4)

    • Lead Vocals – Stephen Stills

    • Mastered By [Runout Etch] – GP*

    • Mixed By – Don Gehman, Michael John Bowen, Tom Dowd

    • Percussion – Joe Lala (tracks: A1 to A4)

    • Photography By – Stephen Sanders (3)

    • Recorded By – Bill Halverson

TR4 from LBI to see this live in 1974 at Atlantic City racetrack was one of my top 3 musical moments. Santana opened - then some rain - then magic happened. Hey Mike from Quakertown, you out there?

  6. C.... R....

The best version of a stunning song

  7. F.... G....

The absolute BEST version of this song ever recorded. Period. This album is nearly impossible to find now days.

  8. T.... O....

One of the best live versions of any song by any artist. IMHO of course.

  9. E.... ....

When I graduated from high school, this was the song that transitioned me from pop to meaningful music. I am so grateful!

What a great discovery!! God I love this man

  13. g.... s....

He only used a Vox Crybaby. Same as Jimi Hendrix and Randy California. Stills played Keyboard, B3, Bass, Piano,He overdubbed so many iconic riffs on CSNY, many of those tunes were hits because of him.

    Right on Garry!

  14. B.... ....

Russ Kunkel - Drums and Joe Lala - Percussions

    B.... ....

    Simply brilliant!

    B.... ....

+BruceisJACK thanks, i was wondering, +Mario MarioMario should add that to the credits. Drums have that slippery groove, making it move. Never heard of Jerry Aiello before - good at comping Still's original organ parts. He makes it move, too. There's another guitar on this, and it aint no pedal steel, really comes in strong at 5:14 so I wonder who that is.

  15. r.... g....

    My favourite change of record

  22. H.... *....

The best version. The more you listen to Stephen Stills the more you hear how much he influenced the CS&N sound. The voice and the guitar.

    H.... *....

Nash did as well. my favorite but love Stills too, always have.

    H.... *....

Yes. There is no CS&N(and whoever) without Steven Stills.

  23. l.... ....

Sounds like this group is having a fight. A heavyweight fight. Unbelievable. Everybody getting their punch,s in .The winner is ,,everyone who hears this song

  24. R.... ....

    Magnificent!

  25. K.... S....

Steve, Stephen has never thought He was under-rated, nor do I. Also what Baci302 cites

    K.... S....

Nope he has always been acclaimed as being a superb guitar man!

    K.... S....

    Karen Saaristo
Well genius, I believe Steve was speaking in reference to his rating with respect to other guitarists who may have been more "popular" overall. Also, if Stephen were to indicate in any manner that he considered himself underrated he would be viewed as a whiny narcissist! So yes, being overshadowed by the CSN legacy, Steve is correct in stating that he is greatly underrated!

  26. S.... L....

One of the MOST underrated guitarists EVER !!

    S.... L....

+Steve Labuski I believe Stephen is the only rock artist to have both Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix both guest on his/her debut album.

    S.... L....

Underrated guitarist? Hardly. Everyone with ears knows Stills is a master. Where do you get off writing such nonsense?

    S.... L....

Dewey Martin was a friend of mine, and he unbelievably said that Stephen and Neil were bad guitarists.

    S.... L....

    Baci302
    His/her? You are an idiot!
Also, Hendrix and Clapton DID both appear on HIS eponymous 1970 album, make no mistake!
