Stephen Stills - Thoroughfare Gap Lyrics
Sometimes I consider my pace, I'm reminded of a train
Gathering speed for the climb to the pass in whose shadow
It already lies, a small metal dragon approaching
The ever present ascending rise to the Seventh Mountain
That it wants to come loose from it's path cast in iron
But you can't slow down now as the earth has presented
A new crest to reach without barely a rest from the last one
Can you wonder what lies beyond? Though you've been
There before and forget about the effort and the strain
Always ascending, each yard as a mile to the never ending pull
Of the steepening grade that's before you
It's no matter, no distance, it's the ride
A valley, a forest, a desert, a stream and an over sized bridge
For the trickle beneath, you remember the torrent
It turned to last spring from the snow melting fast
And the river it became in the summer
Perhaps it is ruin from a fire that has scorched it
So badly that nothing will grow without rain to wash away
The blackened soil, now useless until called upon again
In a future as distant and far away as the next range of mountains
Then take it as far as you see and beyond
With eyes you don't use enough to gather up strength
As thoroughfare gap, what awaits is whatever you see
When you get there of even before
It's no matter, no distance, it's the ride

Stephen Stills Thoroughfare Gap Comments
His best lyrics.
jamjax no doubt
A friend just texted me about this song.......Beautiful
Makes me think of the Civil War....
This is one of the prettiest songs I've ever heard. It's one of those tunes that makes you feel like you're being lifted from the earth that binds us all.
"...so take it as far as you see and beyond, with eyes you don't use enough, gather up strength ..."
The strings are beautiful.
One of his best songs
And so little known!
Thoroughfare Gap is in Virginia.
This song makes me think of a darker time in our history.
"....perhaps it is ruined, for the fire that has scorched it..."
In 1864, the Union army laid waste to the Shenandoah Valley. Burning houses, farms, & fields.
Not blaming anyone alive today.
Just saying what the song makes me feel.....sad. That line damn-near puts me in tears every time I hear it. But I really don't know why I feel this way.
It's a beautiful song. Well-written & performed.
I play it often, yet every time I hear it, that's where my mind goes.
....meant to add...
...this is Appalachian Music!!! The violin parts reach into the deepest part of my soul.
I get a similar feeling, especially knowing how often he made references and allusions to Civil War lore. This song is like a tribute to every great piece of music Stills has written. It's so pretty, it's just heartbreaking! If it makes you feel any better, the Confederates actually won the Battle of Thoroughfare Gap quite handily. I realize that's not much comfort to the folks out in the Shenandoah (which is way far from Thoroughfare). Cheers
Hi Bluematter where is this scenery is it the train to Durango ?
