For a long time, I thought this song was about learning to settle down with the person you know instead of the person you pine for.

I have started to wonder if myself and most people took this advice for opposing the noblest ideals you believe in for the sake of a 'comfortable' situation that doesn't serve you or your partner at all - and that deep down you know what you've done and resent yourself for it?

After properly listening to the song, I wonder if he was merely talking about moving on after someone you loved has passed away?

I am not sure about the meaning, as in I haven't researched itor heard Stills comment, etc. A good rule of thumb is that pretty much one needs consider 60's music as being focused on drugs and sex - free love and turning "on". No judgement here, this is what was happening in society. Also, lyrics were less explicit than today, meaning was conveyed in a way so as not to incur the ire of "squares" and censors. Thus, when singing about sex and drugs, artists would be less direct. All this is to say, that I have always interpreted the song to mean love the one you're with as looving the partner you are having "free love" with. This is to distinguish "free love" from todays "hook ups". Free love had "meaning" according to the hippies. I would say hook ups do not.
