Steely Dan - Time Out Of Mind Lyrics

Son you better be ready for love
On this glory day
This is your chance to believe
What I've got to say
Keep your eyes on the sky
Put a dollar in the kitty
Don't the moon look pretty

Tonight when I chase the dragon
The water may change to cherry wine
And the silver will turn to gold
Time out of mind

I am holding the mystical sphere
It's direct from Lhasa
Where people are rolling in the snow
Far from the world we know

Children we have it right here
It's the light in my eyes
It's perfection and grace
It's the smile on my face

Tonight when I chase the dragon
The water may change to cherry wine
And the silver will turn to gold
Time out of mind

Children we have it right here
It's the light in my eyes
It's perfection and grace
It's the smile on my face

Tonight when I chase the dragon
The water may change to cherry wine
And the silver will turn to gold
Time out of mind

The Mark Knopfler debacle in full effect on what should have been an absolute classic. A good song of a botched creative affair. It's like their waiting for the real soloist to show up. Opinions will vary and fanboys will rally and beat me down, but I call 'em like I hear 'em.

@Edward Sholar It's in my top five for sure, and maybe if I had was forced a gunpoint to choose just one, this may just be it! It is one of those rare moments when everything, the players, the tune, the words, the sound, the production come together in utter perfection. If you were wondering about the rest of my top five its Bodhisattva, Any Major Due, Caves of Altamira and Hey Nineteen. Third World Man is lovely too, so that's three of Gaucho! An underrated track I really love is Chain Lightning. How about your top five Edward?

    LABELLED WITHOUT LOVE.

    Written By: Kelli GemNeye Elaine

We can neither deny nor change the truth! It's easier to speak about the crimes committed by a person with am undiagnosed or ignored mental illness than to acknowledge and get help for the mentally ill individual.

Because of the fear of embarrassment and stigma, we don't seek treatment or even say the word mental illness aloud.

We can't acknowledge what we won't accept. Mental illness doesn't make an otherwise good person bad. Mental illness is a disease just as cancer, diabetes, leukemia, or heart disease. We call an ambulance when our loved ones suffer from a heart attack or is having complications due to diabetes but call the police on someone that is suffering with mental illness.  Funds are being raised for cancer patients and research, diabetes patients and research but when it comes to mental illness, nobody wants to acknowledge that it's a disease with no cure but is and can be managed with the right combination of medication.

We would rather point fingers than look at the reflection in the mirror. It's easier to institutionalize than confront and acknowledge, we rationalize hiding our loved one's mental illness to avoid the thought that as parents or family members we will face blame and ridicule. Family members must be included in the conversations of early diagnosed mental illness. Sadly, mental illness is so stigmatized that most often it goes untreated or undiagnosed.

It's not until mental illness captured our attention due to horrific crimes committed by the individual that has been afflicted with mental illness and heard a voice that instructed them to carry out such heinous atrocities . If we would just stop and take an honest  look at the family member that is ill we

can get the diagnosis and treatment that may prevent a catastrophic event. If we do not address mental illness, the voices will just get louder and be declared the reigning champion of the war going on inside the head of the person afflicted.

We have a choice to either ignore or engage. We see all too well what happens when we deny the irrefutable truth. Mental illness is by no means a character flaw. Really taking a look at someone with mental illness will cause us to take self inventory. We can't change what we don't acknowledge. So many times it's thought to be someone else's problem, until it isn't.

Low income housing and subsidized programs are being cut so that the rich can get richer. A person can't receive public assistance without a mailing address. So while we finger point and blame, maybe reality will hit when we're on the red, blue or green line el train and see the increasing number of homeless individuals that find themselves calling the cars of the train home (or at the very least their bedroom).

With this outlook, those with mental illness don't and won't trust those in authority.

Politicians don't address it until or unless it hits home either because a loved one is diagnosed or murdered by someone that is undiagnosed and ignored. When I was growing up, people didn't use the word mental illness, they said stuff like....."oh, don't mind Johnny, he's special." "Oh, those children in that classroom aren't well behaved and need corporal punishment because they're special." "Billy hurry up because the short yellow bus is here to pick you up, don't forget to put your helmet on because you know you're special."

Mental illness is a dirty word until we or a loved one becomes the poster child for it! There is something innately noble about someone fighting for their life by fighting the noise going on in their head. Until we fully and honestly participate in ALL aspects of humanity we are ALL guilty and accountable.

We can't reach the finish line if we never enter the race and fully engage, empathize and understand mental illness.

Those with mental illness are a reflection of what's broken in this world. What if the problems of the world, caused by "sane" individuals could be solved by the "insane?"

Got you thinking,  don't I? 😁 Being diagnosed with a mental disease should not be a death sentence. We are evolving and devolving at the same time.

Stolen minds, stolen lives. Ignorance is bliss until it isn't. Sanity is relative. Reality is only realized when we're bucked from the "proverbial  horse."  Our minds won't conceive what our heads, hearts and eyes won't believe. Those with mental illness sometimes refuse medication due to lack of understanding and feel as though if the meds take their devil's away, their angels will too flee.

So the "reality" check will continue to be declined until we educate, medicate and dedicate ourselves to seek knowledge of what mental illness truly is and how it effects those with it.  The greatest disservice is NOT being of service. Mental illness is not contagious.

Caring is the cure for what ails us as a people. As a society we are accessories to the crimes committed by those with unaddressed mental illness. It's more than a punch line or a dirty little family secret. It's easier to institutionalize and incarcerate than to diagnose and treat, that mistake sometimes costs the lives of others. That is truly a high price to pay for willful ignorance. No news coverage for a misunderstood individual with mental illness that commits suicide but it's breaking news when they commit a homicide and were forced to take responsibility, although  short lived.

Those with mental illness often times become drug addicts and that becomes the pacifier of a beautiful mind. If discussing mental illness and it's effects cause us to be uncomfortable multiply that feeling by 100 and that's what those suffering from and with it feel on a daily basis. We don't know what we don't know and that becomes, in essence, the bandaid to cover the irresponsible act of desiring to remain ignorant. Knowledge requires action. What good is it to be full of knowledge but only use it to insult another? Wisdom is the passing on of knowledge.

Suicide is the permanent solution. To a temporary problem.  Unfortunately, those with mental disease often take this way out. We attempt to justify the fact that we deny the truth by continuing to live the lie. We have become a microwave society. We don't want to invest the time, effort, energy and money for what is not beneficial to self. We don't do the work that a true human connection would require of us!

Those with mental illness aren't "acting out" because their behavior isn't rehearsed, it's their reality. We as a society refuse to be proactive but find cold comfort in being reactive. Maybe prisons wouldn't be filled to capacity if only we seek treatment and understanding for mental illness. If we don't or won't understand the cause and effect, how can we cure? Treatment is discovery and home should be recovery not a cell in the penetintary.

So, we must engage and do what we can from where we are with what we have to truly make this world a better place. People won't take medication if they won't or don't know they're ill.  How can and why would an individual trust a clinician or support group which they consider outsiders when those closest to them (friends and family) shun and fail to love unconditionally?

It's not our indifference that immobilizes us but our silence.

    Thank you. 💋

  33. V.... M....

It's a shame that the guys and Mark Knopfler didn't see eye-to-eye on this track. He's there, if you listen closely, he's buried behind brass and keys, but he's there.

Slick sophisticated. How did they manage that while smoking opium & washing cocaine down their throats with tequila ? They even smoke pot with mostly seeds. Very poor tastes in self medication.

I've been listening to this on repeat. Whoever gave this a thumbs down has horrible taste. Probably one of the people that made Old Town Road the longest running number one song ever.

  50. G.... D....

Everyone over here making disco records in the late 70's. Steely Dan over there just minding their own business making Fusion Rock records. 1980 rolls around. Steely Dan *flexes their considerable music muscles* "alright alright everyone, let us show you how it's done"

    G.... D....

This is more than genre music. This will be something that people will be able to listen to five hundred years in the future.

  51. G.... B....

This album is utterly sublime! It’s their best album, their ultimate expression. What all the rest of their incredible output was leading up to.

  52. R.... S....

This song is so uplifting !

  53. D.... ....

Perfect combination of sophisticated songwriting, talented lyricists and instrumentalists -not to mention the (quite frankly understated) presence of Mark Knopfler on guitar.

So, he teaching the children to use heroin?

    *KELLI CHRONICLES*
As a society, until we acknowledge, diagnose, treat and manage mental illness of ourselves, loved ones and/or friends, we are accessories to the crimes committed by these individuals that suffer from undiagnosed and untreated mental illness. We have to STOP..🛑 avoiding the obvious and seek a prognosis diagnosis. Ignorance does not apply here. We must move away from the stigma that mental illness is contagious. As a society, we don't want or desire to assist those with mental illness, assuming that others will step in and step up. We don't want to acknowledge mental disease or defects until we're effected by it.....
Mental illness leads to crimes against others and self. We can observe and not absorb, we can comprehend, accept, diagnose, and treat someone with mental illness without becoming mentally compromised. It's not contagious. Sanity is relative. Reality is only realized when we're bucked from our proverbial "high horse."

  59. D.... E....

I am holding a mystical sphere. The 'Dan' did the best fade-outs. this is one. The simple counter-melody in the interlude (2.02) [which I think fits a IV-III-II-I progression] is genius. thanks for post

  60. N.... A....

    One of my favorite singers!

  61. M.... ....

Steely Dan was the hippest band in the '70's ---i don't care they appropriated Black jazz; they introduced it to pop culture

  62. K.... E....

    Classic Steely Dan......
    Live it........
Tonight when I chase the dragon......
    Time out of mind......

  63. G.... J....

    Yeah, boy!

  64. B.... ....

I'm no expert, but I can't shake that it sounds like Michael Jackson may have sampled the kick, snare, and high hats from this @ 0:02 - 0:04 (SLIGHTLY slowed it down, and turned the volume up on the high-hat channel) to make "Billie Jean". It COULD be coincidence, but the very same dynamics (pitch, echo & decay) are present in the "Billie Jean" drum loop, just at a higher volume with more bass in the kick. SOMEONE'S "estate" MAY owe some money here. Not to mention ALL of the other artists that have sampled the drums from "Billie Jean".

  65. R.... J....

Good musicians will always shine though and if they all can get along you have excellence

  66. S.... H....

    Absolutely! Perfection and grace.

The best music in the world in those days. I have been listening since I was kid. When I got old enough to buy my own music. I bought a lot of music by Steely Dan and when I played it they said mom you are weird. I don't care I'm African American and I love Steely Dan's music. R.I.P Walter Becker.

Mark Knopfler on guitar. He said that working with Becker & Fagen was like jumping into a swimming pool with lead weights on. They would do 75 takes of a track to get it right. Thank goodness! NICE tune.

  84. B.... S....

I loved this song when Gaucho came out and played it over and over ad nauseam. Michael McDonald's backing vocals were perfection and grace. I was a young adult at the time, but I must have been hanging with the "wrong" crowd because I hadn't a clue what the lyrics were about. I'm 61 and only recently figured it out. I had been listening to this song all this time and never knew that it was drug related. How's that for being totally clueless!

  85. T.... D....

EVERY TIME I HEAR THIS GEM I FEEL LIKE GOING ON A KNIGHT QUEST!!!!😎😎😎

  90. A.... S....

This song always reminds me of my good friend Richard, he was the one who described this song to my young adult years, he'll play this song after shooting the needle and will tell me if I fall asleep I'll be chasing the dragon.

Great show in Birmingham last Saturday ...WB was high in The Custerdome 🥰

Perfection. Silver will turn to gold

  93. M.... K....

This is the song I would play when I got home from work in the early 80s.

13 year old in 2019: Steely Dan is the best

Everyone else: Who and stop talking to yourself

  95. A.... H....

I've known this great song for a few years now. And yet I only found out a month or so ago that Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler does lead guitar on this track. The more you know!

  96. R.... R....

I read Mark Knopfler recorded 10 hrs for this song and Becker and Fagan only used 15 secs at the start of the song. These guys were and always will be perfectionists.

  97. J.... D....

Fagen and Becker are "THE DYNAMIC DUO!"

  98. N.... B....

just like the lyric says, Perfection and Grace

@mac stacks It catches the vibe of feeling young and having life ahead of you, of "live perfection" - at any age.

    @Go-go Akins

Chasing the dragon means smoking opium. The smoker inhales the swirling smoke (the dragon) through a straw (chasing it)

@Brian Love This album is basically a musical speedball. Deadly perfection.

    N.... B....

@Vinny M Well, what ever way you want to dice it, it was nothing short of a brilliant album.
