Steely Dan - Razor Boy Lyrics

I hear you are singing a song of the past
I see no tears
I know that you know it may be the last
For many years
You'd gamble or give anything
To be in with the better half
But how many friends must I have
To begin with to make you laugh

[Chorus:]
Will you still have a song to sing
When the razor boy comes
And take your fancy things away
Will you still be singing it
On that cold and windy day

You know that the coming is so close at hand
You feel all right
I guess only women in cages can stand
This kind of night
I guess only women in cages
Can play down
The things they lose
You think no tomorrow will come
When you lay down
You can't refuse

[Chorus]

Steely Dan Razor Boy Comments
  1. F.... B....

Possibly the best band in the world...maybe joint with the Doobies...

  2. d.... b....

    another favorite. thanks sunk

  3. R.... D....

Melodic truisms about life. Noone did cynicism so politely and as a consequence, so believably. Never to be equalled I suspect.

  4. S.... S....

    All politicians are ultimately contrived!

  5. S.... S....

Yup! That pure dignity can only be undertstood by weird ass politicos!

  6. c.... s....

Man, this song reminds me of 1973. I wish I could rewind, start all over again...TJS

  7. C.... R....

    Good grief.
Is anyone as much a lover of this band as me?
My favourite band by some distance, and i have many many other favourite bands, but desert island disc?

  8. R.... O....

Razor boy should meet razor face

  9. S.... L....

Steely Dan was cool long before being cool was cool!

  10. V.... S....

A great "cha cha cha" song!

  11. D.... P....

The story so far... humans 405 – aliens 8 👾 RIP Mr Becker

  12. R.... D....

Ou est les neiges d'antan? Ils sont a vous.

  13. c.... s....

One of the Dan's best song. A message about the perils of cocaine. Beautiful, subtle and insightful

  14. M.... B....

    Skunk on steel guitar.

  15. A.... B....

    Thank you, WB and DF.

  16. S.... L....

Featuring the legendary Ray Brown on the bass! My favorite part of Steely Dan is how they arranged the best guest musician spots.

    S.... L....

As you know, they were heavily influenced by Jazz. They liked it better than Rock and Roll. Whoever they wanted, they could probably get.

    S.... L....

I had no idea this was Ray Brown. Thanks for that enlightenment.

  17. D.... A....

Extremely overlooked song by Steely Dan....but their usual brilliance!

    D.... A....

One of my very favourites of theirs.

    D.... A....

    It is.

But then again, I put on a Dan album and will say that about every one of their pieces that hasn’t been run into the ground by classic rock stations. They’re song writing was brilliant. A true anti-hero of the 70s. They shunned fads, did their own thing, and they played it to perfection on every single track.

    D.... A....

@Hesh Couldn't agree more. Music for eternity. Still razor sharp and beautiful songwriting after all these years. Hey, I'm just commenting because yours was only 4 days ago! And if you're a Dan fan you just might like this contemporary singer-songwriter who deserves more attention: Andy Shauf. I can't get enough of him...

  19. y.... y....

    Axe man and razor boy

  20. M.... B....

Love the conga and vibraphone. Victor Feldman and Skunk are phenomenal on this track

    M.... B....

I live in Mill Hill North London, Victor was Born and bought up in Edgware about two miles away, there isn't even a plaque to his memory...

    M.... B....

@Robert Dore yes but now, thanks to you, thousands of people all over the globe will know.. Cheers Robert

  21. T.... C....

Dan Good Al um for this 2018. Thanksgiving Christmas holidays

  22. C.... H....

I assume hes the coke dealer

    C.... H....

I was thinking coke dealer as well since coke users sometime uses a razor to shape the coke before sniffing...

    C.... H....

    Sounds about right.

  23. E.... ....

Finally !! It wasn't fair that only the axeman had a song!

  24. P.... R....

I want to die with dignity and when that time comes i want to listen to all of steely dan as i drift off happy they have been a huge part of my life this band

    P.... R....

@Peter my thoughts exactly!  I want Steely playing as I pass......only problem is, which song do I want.  I love them all!!

    P.... R....

PETE EVER THING BOUT JUST JUMPING IN FRONT OF THE BROWN COW I'LL SAY A FEW WORDS ROCK ON

    P.... R....

    brooklyn or dalas

    P.... R....

    @Niall Wood neither

  25. D.... E....

I wonder why I've never heard any song from this album on the radio. I've heard Rikki Don't Lose That Number & Do It Again so much over the last 40 years or so I can hardly bear to hear them again.

    D.... E....

"My Old School" gets airplay. It's one of the best-known Steely Dan songs. "Bodhisattva" probably also gets played, although not nearly as much. But you'll never hear the lesser-known gems like "Razor Boy" or "The Boston Rag". I love this album. Never heard any of these songs except for "My Old School" and "Bodhisattva" till about six months ago.

    D.... E....

It's because AOR (album oriented rock) stations no longer exist. Now we just hear the same handful of songs repeated for decades on the radio, and like you I can't stand those songs anymore. Radio died long before it had to, it's a shame.

  26. B.... I....

    What about Axeman

  27. G.... Y....

I wish Donald Fagan would finally tell us what some of his and Becker's song mean . He says enough people are writing about it . yeah and get endless different interpretations .

    G.... Y....

But if he explained them, people would stop writing about them.

    G.... Y....

I don't want my personal interpretation destroyed by reality...

    G.... Y....

Actually I like oblique lyrics. I like the idea of suggesting something rather than saying it explicitly. Kinda arty, ya know? And it's the writer's prerogative. Fagen is comfortable singing this stuff, and why not?

  28. R.... D....

Who sings back up on this track ?

    R.... D....

Ric Dimaculangan Walter Becker and Jim Hodder

  29. A.... J....

The razor boy is the repo man.

    A.... J....

    No
The Razor Boy is the cocaine dealer

    A.... J....

talesin- god of the internet nope. Repo Man, aka Death.

    A.... J....

nope, razor, as in cutting up cocaine. razor boy as in drug dealer
it's about women hooked (in cages) on cocaine and don't care that is costing them everything (they play down the things they lose)
it's another steely dan drug song

  30. R.... C....

I don't go to a "razor boy" when I go to the barber.

  31. R.... T....

This song is about the risk of getting pregnant and about having to face the abortion doc,, the Razer boy on that cold and windy day......T

    R.... T....

    Maybe in your mind.

    R.... T....

San Diego means a whale's vagina.

    R.... T....

    @Timothy Viard Lol.

  32. O.... M....

    Man...that stand up bass...

    O.... M....

Man...Even the triangle in this tune oozes inpiration.....

    O.... M....

That's none other than Ray Brown

  33. B.... B....

Rest in Peace Walter Becker. These songs of yours will rock us through Eternity. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Beautiful, sophisticated, timeless excellence.

    J.... S....

    music for a lifetime :-)

  35. P.... M....

    what is a razor boy?

    P.... M....

    The Grim Reaper

    P.... M....

the razor boy is the coke dealer
coke is prepared for consumption by chopping it up and making lines with a razor blade

    P.... M....

Always thought he was a sharks debt collector.

  36. C.... F....

reminds me of another time .......I was to young to fully enjoy

    C.... F....
