SteelDrivers, The - Where Rainbows Never Die Lyrics

I'm an old man now, I can't do nothing
Young folks don't pay me no mind
But in my day I sure was something
Before I felt the heavy hand of time

I'm an old man now, I'm bound for glory
Time to lay these burdens down
Had enough of this old world of worry
Gonna trade my troubles for a crown

I will make my way across the fields of cotton
And wade through muddy waters one last time
And in my dreams I come out clean
When I reach the other side
Waste away the sunsets where rainbows never die

I've got on last thing to do
One more mile before I'm through
Casting off these earthly chains
Going where there's no more pain

I will make my way across the fields of cotton
And wade through muddy waters one last time
And in my dreams I come out clean
When I reach the other side
Waste away the sunsets where rainbows never die

I'm an old man now, can't do nothing
Young folks don't pay me no mind

  1. G.... a....

Revelation 4.... And instantly I was in the Spirit, and I saw a throne in heaven and someone sitting on it. The one sitting on the throne was as brilliant as gemstones—like jasper and carnelian. And the glow of an emerald circled his throne like a rainbow. Twenty-four thrones surrounded him, and twenty-four elders sat on them. They were all clothed in white and had gold crowns on their heads.”

    James 1:12 ESV /

Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.

Wish I would’ve known about this song before my grandfather passed. He would’ve loved it. Pretty sure he was fine with “Grandpa” by Justin Moore. Couldn’t speak but he squeezed the hell outta my hand. Love ya Papap

Its incredible when iconic singers and musicians reach that pinnacle in their lives and they leave the roots of their original success they never reconsider those who helped them reach that arena. Chris Stapleton started way back with this band and these blue grass musicians. But then he took a real country George Jones classic...ship wrecked it into a blues rock song and left these other guys behind. Never invites them to the awards shows and never commends them for the times spent when he just played for the nickles and dimes thrown in the cup at the base of the band stand. Never thanks them for being the roots of his success....ungrateful....people never look back to see where they've come from. All those musicians were his beginning and now he hardly even gives them a thought......the same effects like changing tires on your car......who needs these old ones....the new ones will carry me another 100 thousand miles.

    J.... S....

James Smith Do you know these people personally?

    J.... S....

    Missed that by a mile.

  30. D.... 1....

Nobody paid attention to The Steeldrivers. Go figure?? Must have seen the 10 times across 5yrs. They had the misfortune to be out when Cherryholmes was hot. You've heard Stapleton's songs for years and probably didn't know it!

  36. H.... S....

I discovered this song shortly after we put our 15 year old lab down. "Old Man" was the greatest dog that ever lived and ran and swam and snuggled. I immediately start bawling anytime I hear this beautiful tribute.

  37. B.... B....

    fucking amazing.

  38. C.... R....

Heard this for the first time last weekend at his concert, what an amazing talent

  39. F.... M....

This is a great song by Chris Stapleton and Michael James Henderson. I have to listen to Chris sing this one at least once a day. Thanks for posting this LessThanFace Productions, less wall of sound is always better...unplugged.

  40. J.... B....

I can't listen to this song without tears streaming down my face. That's what music should be. I miss my papaw so much.

    J.... B....

    Indeed Jeff Boone, indeed.

    J.... B....

Me too brother I miss him so much. Grandpas are a special breed

    J.... B....

Jeff Boone ditto. My grandpa is on his way out and it’s so fitting.

    J.... B....

My grandpa was the greatest man I ever knew...they just dont make em like him anymore...god I miss that man.

  41. C.... W....

    The Steeldrivers are fantastic.

  42. A.... H....

Wow... Majestic group, Chris is truly one in a million.

  43. E.... H....

    Who could possibly dislike this?!

  44. T.... R....

I keep trying to cover this song, but I can't help but think of my dad every time I try. :(

  45. T.... f....

Wow Chris Stapleton is great a lot of awesome songs....

  46. A.... O....

Great tune, thanks! Which member of Steeldrivers wrote it? Why isn't Chris with them any longer?

    A.... O....

Any One my understanding is that he just wanted to focus on writing rather than touring. At least that's what was said in public when he left the Steeldrivers.

    A.... O....

Think the bills are getting paid quicker. Plus his new stuff is killing it.

  47. K.... G....

Killer simply killer .Too bad Chris moved to solo. He's still one of the best singer songwriters in the industry " you can't reheat a soufflé "

    K.... G....

    Did he write this tune?

    K.... G....

Any One Chris Stapleton wrote this yes.

  48. E.... P....

First time hearing this tonight..love it!

  49. P.... D....

20,000 views? Should be 20 million.

  50. b.... ....

I wonder if the people in the crowd realize how lucky they are to have witnessed this

    b.... ....

@Dude Guy Of course. Everybody knew that Chris was something special when he was in the Steeldrivers. FWIW, the Steeldrivers is a marvelous band that brought Stapleton's songs to life better than Stapleton has since. Most stringband aficionados understand that Tammy Rogers is a fantastic fiddler and harmony singer. Her harmonies with Mike Fleming elevate Stapleton's fabulous singing. And Richard Bailey's banjo playing adds a lilting counterpoint to Stapleton's boozy songs and raspy voice. Everybody who heard that band before Stapleton got famous knew that it was at the highest level of artistry. BTW, the Steeldrivers are still great.

    b.... ....

@Dude Guy As opposed to The Steeldrivers with Gary Nichols on lead vocals.

    b.... ....

@Dude Guy You're a funny guy aren't ya? You have no idea huh? While I"m not part of the crew, I'm there working each year. LessThanFace are the official film archivists for the Festival and have been doing so for years. There's been greats way beyond and over Stapleton who's wonderful, but it didn't begin with him nor does it end with him. But back to my initial comment: you just don't know do you? Some of the all timers have passed through here along with supernovas too (like Billy Strings, New Grass Revival, Allison Krauss and countless others 'on their way up') and it's predecessor Winterhawk, that is, if you've been paying attention.

    b.... ....

@Mark Charts There's no better festival around, and I'm fully aware of Merlfest and Telluride.

    b.... ....

@Jack Windrom Thanks for replying. I've been to Telluride only to alpine ski; no bluegrass. My 1st bg festival was Mole Lake WI. I saw Doc & Merle, NGR when Courtney Johnson(?) was with them (fly through the country). My favorite was KFC in Louisville. Red Knuckles, Bill Monroe, Johnson Mtn Boys., John Hartford, etc. Price was right. Them were the days

  51. K.... S....

This song is on repeat in my car until something better comes along. What a great story of a proud, elderly man who has something left to prove. He's on his way to heaven, where the rainbows never die. Love it.

    K.... S....

I don't thing the old man in the song has anything left to prove. He's just on his way home.

    K.... S....

maybe he is headed for hawaii? ...west of where the sunsets...where rainbows never die!

  52. K.... G....

    Beautiful.

  53. K.... C....

What a great song. This ought to be on the Radio somewhere EVERYDAY !

  54. D.... P....
