Stealers Wheel - Star Lyrics
So they made you a star, now your head's in a cloud,
Now you're walking down the street with your feet off the ground
They read in the press all about your success,
They believe every word they've been told.
After all you've been through tell me what will you do,
When you appear on the stage there's a standing ovation,
You really live out your performance, you're the biggest sensation.
You breeze through the door and when you take the floor
You expect to have it all to yourself.
After all you've been through tell me what will you do
When you find yourself back on the shelf?
You breeze through the door and when you take the floor
You expect to have it all to yourself.
When you find yourself back on the shelf?

Stealers Wheel Star Comments
The letter please someone!
Lennon or McCartney would have been proud of this song.
Very under-rated song, only got up to #29 in '74. Gerry Rafferty went on to bigger hits as a solo artist. Baker Street, Right Down The Line come to mind. Home and Dry was also very good, but not a big hit. What a great talent. RIP.
Sounds like Beatles
Great tune ... and I agree with Bill ... underrated! Just picking and singing it on my acoustic. Too bad I can't muster both vocal parts at once. Will get a friend on this .... lol!
I had forgotten about this great song for so many years! It just bounces along so cool and easy. I guess AM radio was a wealth of fantastic sounds and a lifetime of memories.
RIP A&M Records
They actually had something worth listening.
This song as well as many others show how promotional control of the air waves help set the direction of music AKA, socity. It never got any play..damd --- promoters!
Ahhh, brings back the 70's. Such great times, and great music.
Best footapper ever, rip jerry you were a star
So they've made you a star
Now your head's in a cloud
And you're walkin' down the street
With your feet are off the ground
They read in the press all about your success
They believe every word they've been told
After all you've been through tell what will you do
When you find yourself out in the cold
Ah, tell me Ah, tell me
When you appear on the stage
There's a standing ovation
You really live out your performance
You're the biggest sensation
You breeze through the door and when you take the floor
You expect to have it all to yourself
After all you've been through tell me what will you do
When you find yourself back on the shelf
Ah, tell me Ah, tell me
You breeze though the door and when you take the floor
You expect to have it all to yourself
After all you've been through tell me what will you do
When you find yourself back on the shelf
Ah, tell me Ah, tell me
Rafferty and Egan what a duo.
Loved in 74 still love it now,rip gerry
JFC could this guy write, sing and give his all.
incredible
A song you hear once and you want hear it again , soon. Unfortunately it didn't get all that much air play back then.
For me, this song was by far the best they did - not to lessen their others - but this tune just has that certain ingredient that says yep, I'm the one.
I can’t get this version on iTunes.
juke box over and over and over and over........scotch and water
This piano is very cool.
I sent my little brother to the record store for Star Baby by Guess Who, he came back with this. Glad he did.
Great song!
Blijft een wereldnummer!!
Sounds like a song from one of the Saturday morning kid shows back in the day but I still like it
These sounded as good as...... or....... Better than the Bloody Beatles!!!!
Sorry I Meant these GUYS!!!
Dig this great song;remember my late Dad playing this track on guitar for my sister and I to go sleep to in the evenings, great times and memories!
Andy Partridge brought me here. What a great memory. So good!!-
Now who could this have been written about? A more interesting speculation than even "You're So Vain".
I wish I could put my finger on it. Why is this song so overwhelming ?
👍👍👍👍🎶🎶🎶🎶
Love this song. My mate and I used to play this when we were boys. My rudimentary guitar and John McCaffreys piano. Gerry and Joe two paisleys bhoys
LOVE this song! 💗 Reminds of a Beauty I know!
Fabulous
What genius Gerry was...RIP
Joe Egan wrote this one, and he is singing lead on it. Gerry Rafferty is singing harmony.
Gerry level god🎸
back in the day when music was interesting
Parts of this song are very similar to John Lennon's Nobody Told Me. I wonder if Lennon was channeling this tune when he wrote it.
This literally sounds like The Beatles, crazy. I just started really listening to Stealers Wheel
Better lyrics than the Beatles, for the most part.
Am I bad! Title of the tune is Everything will turn out fine, not what I said five minutes ago IN my defense it was many many many years ago But I ain't wrong about this gem, loved it then and still do!!
Love this tune, big time love it Great band Happy song, wish they made them like this nowadays The band had many gems, this is just one of their best Another being Everyone's agreed that everything will be all right. Give it a listen Damn the 70's were good
great audio!
5 out of 5 stars.
Classic, Pure Gold
Years before it's time ....could have been written about the latest 'X Factor' winners !
ALRIGHT EVERYONE. SETTLE AN ARGUEMENT WITH MY FRIEND. IS STUCK IN THE MIDDLE WITH YOU OR STAR BETTER?? Like for stuck in the middle and comment for star
R.I.P. Gerry Rafferty who had died early in life.
Great song - isn’t this and ‘Stuck’ both about Billy Connolly?
Not many songs remind me of the seventies more than this one.
Great song
This is definitively the group's best. Released on December 22, 1973, reaching # 29 on March 23, 1974. R.I.P., Gerry.
Also agree, their best song! Rock On!
So they made you a star, now your head's in a cloud,

I think it's "You breenge through the door"
............aaaaah tell me............aaaaah tell me!!
This is a true classic, I wish music like this was still in the charts instead of all this Drake and Minaj crap. What’s happened to our generation.
Looked at all the comments and decided that Star tops Stuck because of it's simplicity and the way Gerry and Joe's harmonies just meld. They are perfectly matched and a joy to listen to.
its a good song but there less commercial songs are better
My little sister and I were at a carnival. One game had prizes that were 45s you could pull out of a box. My sister stuck her four year old hand in and pulled a demo copy of Star. I still have the copy. It is really worn out. We loved that song so much.
#ugottalisten2b4udie
Fuck kazoos
What a great song. I remember listening to it on the radio in the mid 70s.
underrated song
I agree best song they did.
Best song from them. Stuck in the middle sucks and is very overplayed!
Such a wonderful song!!!!!!
one of the best songs of all time.
great song!!
Probably my second favorite song of all time....right after "Incense & Peppermints" & I'm an old codger who has listened to music non-stop for 5 1/2 decades.
The thing that strikes me about this song (other than its brilliant lyric) is its simplicity. Simple chords, an easygoing rhythm, and fine clear vocals. I dig a great Stevie Ray Vaughan solo as much as anyone, but in its own way "Star" is every bit as compelling. I was 15 when it was released; it takes me right back there and I'm happy. :)
MUCH better than Stuck In The Middle. Underrated. Gorgeous song. Absolutely love this.
I think Joe Egan should get more credit for this song.
We had stax and stax of vinyl 45's in the late 60's & 70's, thanks to my Mother. "STAR" was always one of my favorites... I owe my vast knowledge of music to my mother, now 78 years old. This song just jumped into my head today, and I found it here. Transported me back to when I was 8. WOW. Listened to it yet again, and the lyrics remind me of what Carrie Fisher said in an interview about the subject of fleeting stardom, which she had witnessed her parents go through. Love this song even more now...
Un poco de esencia de "The Beatles"
LOVE the lilting piano solo starting at !;41 !
Great song. High school memories 1975
Going to the 50-year class reunion....? 🤔
Little did they know when they recorded this song back in '73 or so, that it would perfectly describe Donald Trump in 2016.....
i am mexicano ,good music
Y que tiene que ver que seas mexicano? 😂😂🤭🤭
Not everyone plays with the same toys ...
AH,tell me again! This song never gets old! However , it's like the Presidential election! Don"t ya think?
pizza1953 yeah—now we are stuck with an absolute piece of shit until 2020 or the bastard goes to Leavenworth
One of my all-time favorite songs right here. Love it! :)
When I was in 10th grade (this would have been 2003/2004) I watched Reservoir Dogs, heard "Stuck in the Middle With You", looked up more Stealer's Wheel, and got hooked on their music, particularly this song. This song always takes me back since I listened to it a lot when I was in high school.
Around the same time I discovered this song, we were studying Romeo and Juliet in English class, so this song always reminds me of that story - particularly the piano solo. That piano part seems fitting for Romeo and Juliet, even if the rest of the lyrics don't.
this is exactly like how I discovered stealers wheel. saw reservoir dogs at the age of 16, liked stuck in the middle and now I'm hooked to stealers wheel.
I was born in 2003. Feel old yet?
Fantastic harmony line. Very unconventional. Very inventive.
Reminiscent of Badfinger
There bands in the early 70's that had this sound.
It made you.
Classic example of an oldie title that is never, EVER played on commercial golden oldies formats! Awesome song. I HATE, HATE, HATE heavily-researched commercial golden oldies radio formats in general !!!
The song is an all-time favourite of mine. It came out in '73 (I was 13)
and I remembered thinking how it was a cut above much of the AM pop
played in those days...
AM radio was in the toilet by '73. FM was where it was at - and the Stealer's Wheel's "Ferguslie Park" album was played on many FM stations, including the old KFMQ in Lincoln, NE - long gone now.
came out 26/1/1974 spent 6wks in charts
I was referring to Stuck in the Middle, the "big AM hit," which DID come out IN 1973 !! Star came out later, in early '74, yes. (I listened to FM only in those days unless forced to, otherwise - somebody else's car radio, etc.) You were right; Bunnee777 was wrong, OK.
Riding in my Dad's old Ford Station Wagon in 1974. At Age:5.
This would've made a perfect closing theme song to "Boogie Nights" (1997).
Justin Bieber should listen to this.
Justin who ? :))
Leave the Beebs alone. Jesus, every old codger needs to have a go at the kid.
Yes, he'd do well to heed its message. Otherwise he'll wind up in The 27 Club.
@Jack F "kid"? Spawn of Satan more like
That piano break sound so...beatlesque...what a great song. As a kid I thought this was an unpublished Beatles tune.
They have,nt got to listen to it Grigori, I remember when this song was released in 1973 and in my opinion it was,nt given the same air time as Stuck in the middle had. A far better song i think.
Gerry and Joe were brilliant together.
Six people don't like great music.
Now up to eight!
Too bad, because this is one GREAT tune!
the 9 people who disliked this are dumbasses
Grigori Rasputin 12
..and now it's 13 !! the must be deaf :))
Grigori Rasputin it was only the kazoos for me, kazoos are fucking garbage and get an immediate dislike from me BECAUSE I FUCKING HATE THEM. The song would have been right up my alley with out it so ppppppttthhhhhh that's me and that's why I disliked, not cuz I "don't like great music"
Excellent!!!
I got hooked on this when I was 9 or 10. It was on one of those K-Tel records "Out of Sight" back in 1975. Great song. Still love it today
michael linskey I remember those k tel records one of them had back when my hair was short on it lol
The late great Gerry Rafferty. He had such a sweet sound. Rest in peace, my friend while we continue to enjoy your wonderful collection of music.
Joe Egan wrote and sang leadvocals on this
Very Beatlesque!
great songs
Check out "Late Again" for more fab-isms :-)
For maximum hilarity, Casey Kasem pointed out on the air that his feet were off the ground and his head was near the clouds! I heard it on a '74 flashback episode
After this Iowa caucus, frontrunners, BEWARE!
yeah, this good!
Just as good as stuck in the middle with you
+Norm guerrero BETTER, much better
The Norm's win ...again!
While it's so different, hardly anyone among the millions of people who only know Stuck would even guess it's the same band.
Better.
Muito bom!!
Awesome number had the single was very popular in South Africa,in fact still have the single--can't find it on CD anywhere!
