Status Quo - Black Veils Of Melancholoy Lyrics

If I see you hiding in the night by a peppercorn tree
The tree it moves, lets me see what I wanna see
A poison gaze of your mind is all that's worrying me.

The pictures that I see are seen by no-one else but me
To cause the night to be in sight, a little point of me
I imagine nearly anything I want to see.

Black veils of melancholy falling on me
Black veils keep shadowing my mind
Black veils that make my mind seem small

Black veils of melancholy falling on me
Black veils keep shadowing my mind
Black veils that make my mind seem small

I see you with my eyes closed getting closer and closer to me
I open my eye up and you're not there
It's all in my mind

Black veils of melancholy falling on me
Black veils keep shadowing my mind
Black veils that make my mind seem small

Black veils of melancholy falling on me
Black veils keep shadowing my mind
Black veils that make my mind seem small

Status Quo Black Veils Of Melancholoy Comments
  1. B.... R....

    Great song!!q!

  2. J.... ....

I heard they sued themselves for plagiarism on this one. I mean, C'MON.

  3. T.... B....

Trippin balls under the peppercorn tree

Evil tongues keep raving about the fact that this is simply the "little brother" of "Pictures Of Matchstick Men". For me a total mistake, because even if an influence of the first big hit is unmistakable, it is "Black Veils Of Melancholy" is a very unique and not least therefore very good song from the psychedelic early days of Status Quo. Even though Pye Records pushed them into the psychedelic drawer, this band did not even need to copy themselves.

Reminds me of Jason crest ...turquoise tandem cycle. Check it out.

  5. R.... C....

This proves that Status Quo's "Pictures of Matchstick Men" was a hard act to follow.

  6. D.... D....

    It´s pomm in minor

  7. S.... C....

this is just as good as pictures of matchstick men same groovy sound

    S.... C....

Sandra, I agree with you. I liked ' Black Veils' when it came out. It has the same groove and it has the four drops of a second in the bassline. I do not know that at the time but the four drops goes straight through me. Tony Robson

  8. B.... R....

Pictures of matchstick men's less popular little brother

  9. B.... ....

    not bad LOL
but give me the Bee Gees version

    B.... ....

You have it mixed up with Spicks and Specks not this song.

  10. T.... ....

Black Veils Of Matchtick Men or Pictures Of Melancholy

  11. M.... ....

So consistent over the years. IMO FR has one of the most distinctive and underrated voices in rock.

  12. m.... ....

more like matchstick men arranged upside down or backwards

Pictures of matchstick men part 2

Record companies in those days insisted that the follow-up to a successful hit single be recognisably of the same character; thus the Kinks interchangeable first two singles, "You Really Got Me" and "All Day And All of the Night".
After a couple of hits they were in a strong enough position to stop recreating such unrepresentative songs.

  14. a.... ....

Dispite de failure  was a excelente music.

  15. m.... b....

    Trop cool

  16. T.... K....

Nice to hear it, but no wonder it didn't chart - it's just Pictures Of Matchstick Men slightly altered!! (Oh, that difficult second single..)

    T.... K....

+Tidd Kidd Quite agree. They were obviously "following the formula", as they say in the music business. Sometimes such a tactic will work, and result in another chart hit. This time it didn't!

    T.... K....

It was the record companies that insisted upon such formula - hence the interchangeable and somewhat unrepresentative first two singles from The Kinks. Ray Davies refused to play that game after that, but I guess in the case of Quo the failure of their identikit 2nd single left them free to change their style.

    T.... K....

The similarity between the two songs work as part of an album (chiastic structure: "Black Veils of Melancholy" corresponds with "Pictures of Matchstick Men," "When My Mind is Not Live" corresponds with "Sunny Cellophane Skies", "Elizabeth Dreams" corresponds with "Technicolor Dreams," etc.). The album is actually masterfully crafted as a unified whole. When taken apart and released as singles, however, it just doesn't work as well.

    T.... K....

Ye it is a rehash of matchstick men and nowhere near as good a track, but given they were young lads who went on to become one of the worlds biggest rock bands, I can forgive em. Stick Caroline on mate

  17. M.... ....

    Hey Joe anyone? :)

    M.... ....

  18. T.... K....

    THATS when they were cool!

  19. I.... G....

I can't believe it is Status Quo's debut song. It sounds like they were active very long ago. They are GREAT!!!
