Statler Brothers, The - The Official Historian Of Shirley Jean Berrell Lyrics
I'm the official historian
Of Shirley Jean Berrell
I've know her since God only knows
And I won't tell
I caught her the first time
And Shirley, she knows me just as well
I can tell you her birthday
And her daddy's middle name
The uncles on her mama's side
And the one they don't claim
What she's got for Christmas since 1952
And that's only the beginning of
The things I could tell you
Of Shirley Jean Berrell
I've known her since God only knows
And I won't tell
I caught her the first time
She stumbled and fell
And Shirley, she knows me just as well
I can tell you her favorite song
And where she likes to park
And why to this very day
She's scared of the dark
How she got her nickname
And that scar behind her knee
If there's anything you need to know
About Shirley just ask me
I know where she's ticklish
And her every little quirk
The funnies she don't read
And her number at work
I know what she stands for
And what she won't allow
The only thing that I don't know
Is where she is right now
I'm the official historian
Of Shirley Jean Berrell
I've know her since God only knows
And I won't tell
I caught her the first time
She stumbled and fell
And Shirley she knows me just as well
Oh Shirley she knows me just as well...

Cowbell, i need more cowbell!
At 82 to say this is one of my fave "Statler Story" songs.. has no meaning...CUZZ I luv em all1111
Many of us are "Official Historians" of other people. Most of us will honor that by keeping our big mouths SHUT. We all deserve that respect!
One of my favorite songs by the Statler's..
I love them so much. I love this album so much.
the opening of this song reminds me of an old Rickey Nelson tune
I’m 22 and get the weirdest looks when I play this. Not my fault people don’t don’t have any taste
Twodogs Hawkeye but you have great taste
I think I'm the only 11 almost 12 year old that knows almost all their songs by heart I've listened.to the over and over
That just means you were raised right
jayden you are allright, for sure
To enjoy this at your age Shows you are wise beyond your years you will go far in life
When I was 11, I think that I knew most of their songs. Good for you
This song is about my grandma. She met them on the tour buss and traveled with them for a while. As a tribute they wrote this song for her. They're not together now and I don't think she saw them again after she stopped traveling with them! Hope this helped with some of the mystery behind this song!
Tori Burrell thank you for sharing
That's cool they retired and sons of two members Harold and Don the only real brothers tour as a group called Flagstaff hope that helps
@Josh D Holsinger actually, one of Don's sons -Langdon and Harold's only son Wil are the duo formerly known as Grandstaff. Now known as Wilson Fairchild.
why was she on their tour bus? there has to be a story in there!! Was she hitch hiking and they picked her up?
@Kevinfan726....I did not know that! Neat!
Ah Shirley McKenna---your husband picked a good one for you. The Statlers are priceless. I grew up in NC and listening to them.
I went to several of their July 4th shows in Staunton. Happy Bithday USA they called them.
great song!
Grande dewitt! The number one
I love them so much. I have every album.
The Statler Brothers are My Favorite Country Music Group/Band When My Grandmother died on July 21, 2015 I listened to there Music and It got me through the tough times My Grandpa Loves old country music my dad started listing to country music after the statler brothers smash hit Flowers on the Wall came out then he started listening to Loretta Lynn I been to Nashville and My favorite part was going to the country music hall of fame The only problem I had was There plaque was so High That my mom read it to me.

Jimmy Fortune (Former Statler Brother) will perform live in concert on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at 7:30 P.M. at the River Arts Center in Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin. Here is the information: http://www.riverartsinc.org/jimmy-fortune
great song
This is my song,, My late husband use to sing this t me
+SHIRLEY McKENNA I have my Shirley Jean too - although her name isn't Shirley. This song hits me hard every time I hear it.
Saturday night set back card game
out of all the women i've knew, i seem to have picked the worst one....typical 60s person...wild, crazy, drunk and moody....she cost me a huge pile of money and endless trouble
when I hear this song I am happy because my name is Shirley.
nice song first time I have heard it
Look again at the picture that starts the video. Have they EVER been that young? Thanks for the song and for making me feel old. :)
magnificent entertainers---music and content tremendous
My mom's name is Shirley Jean Borell. She claims that she took a train trip and met a country singer while on the trip. She says this song is written about her but she maybe fibbing.
True or not, it makes a good story!
She's fibbing! It is actually about my grandma. I've grown up hearing this story and have seen pictures of her traveling with them on their tour buss! It is still a sweet story your mom told you though! And funny how similar their names are!!
I wonder since they spell it differently? "Berrell"....I'd think they'd spell it correctly if that's the case. Either way, great story!! :)
I did see it on one of the YouTube versions spelled "Burrell" I don't see it on this page and I looked through it all.
Would you happen to have the Statler Brothers doing I Was There? If you do could you upload it. Thanks
I've seen it on youtube in the past hour.

Never understood why this was "novelty" other than it was way more original than anything out there at the time. Statlers did a lot of crap, but so did most groups with their lifespan. When they hit it, nobody else came close. This is one of them.
they never did any crap- you take that back! :)

This one was one of the best. very little country I like, but the Statlers are authentic.
My impression has always been that she is his long time, and very recently former, lover. He knows where she's ticklish, her entire story and where she parks. Suggests intimacy.
I'd say it's best not to worry about their relationship or who walked away from who. Just take that tag line 'the only thing I DON'T know is where she is right now' and go with it as a novelty song.
Glad to have this song back on YT. It is one of my favorites. Of course my husband and I are great fan of the Statlers. Really miss hearing new music from them, but then, of course, we have alot of music and especially their gospel music. Love the Statlers and thanks again for "Shirley Jean Berrell
He says he knows her number at work, but then says he doesn't know where she is right now- lol! Anyhow, this and "Pictues" are two of my very favorite SB songs, of their MANY great ones. Thanks for posting it. BTW, the cowbell in the beginning sounds just like "Hello Mary Lou"-- another great oldie.
@John1948TwelveA Thanks, John - that is my major assumption - and it sounds as if separate ways were more Shirley's idea than his. It is a funny and somewhat sad song. One of my favorites, even so!

@AnglicanXn It would seem to me the grew up toigether and were childhood sweethearts until somewhere they went seperate ways.
I love this song - but it has always been a mystery to me - what is his relationship to Shirley?
This song impresses me as a father's deep love for his daughter. He was always there to "pick her up when she stumbled and fell."
. . . where she liked to park" Take a guess.
AnglicanXn Childhood crush.
Childhood friends that eventually became a crush (?)
It is about my grandma. Shirley Jean Burrell. She met them on their tour buss and traveled with them for a while and apparently she made a good impression because they wrote a song about her. I've grown up with her telling us this sorry!!
God I just love this song!
SLOWPUNTURE 1 you get that right I like you;r comment.
