Staples, Mavis - Wrote A Song For Everyone Lyrics

Met myself a comin' county welfare line
I was feelin' strung out, hung out on the line
Saw myself a goin', down to war in June
What I want, all I want is writin' myself a tune

Wrote a song for everyone
Wrote a song for truth
Wrote a song for everyone
And I couldn't leave it up to you

Got myself arrested, wound me up in jail
Richmond 'bout to blow up, communication failed
If you see the answer, now's the time to say
What I want, all I want is get you down to pray

I wrote a song for everyone
Wrote a song for truth
Wrote a song for everyone
And I couldn't even talk to you

I wrote a song for everyone
Wrote a song for truth
Wrote a song for everyone
And I couldn't even talk to you

Saw the people a standin' thousand years in chains
Somebody said it's different now, look, it's just the same
Pharaohs spins the message, 'round and 'round the truth
They could have saved a million people, how can I tell you?

Well, I wrote a song for everyone
Wrote a song for truth
Wrote a song for everyone
And I couldn't even talk to you

Wrote a song for everyone
Wrote a song for truth
Wrote a song for everyone
And I couldn't even talk to you

Wrote a song for everyone
Wrote a song for truth
Wrote a song for everyone
And I couldn't even talk to you

  1. f.... ....

    I'm crying

  2. s.... ....

    Very awesome

  3. S.... B....

Two of my favorite people on the planet doing a great version of one of my favorite songs!

  4. S.... B....

    Yeah, beautiful

  5. t.... ....

Love this womans voice she is one of the greatest singers ever and the master and legend Jeff Tweedy JUST LOVE YOU

  6. 0.... ....

    This is so beautiful!!

  7. S.... B....

How does some teenage girl playing along with a SRV record or a homeless guy playing a bad out of tune piano on the street get over millions of views and this only get a couple hundred thousand?

  8. A.... A....

    💜💜💜 I don't have the words.

  9. e.... ....

What a voice! What a song! Metta. :)

  10. D.... F....

    Goosebumps

  11. J.... N....

How anyone could vote thumbs down on this I'll never understand. Jeff Tweedy is on cloud nine doing this duet with Mavis. The smiles, the chemistry the interaction between the two. It sounds fantastic. I love this video. Thank you so much for posting it.

  12. A.... S....

this currently has 999 likes... and i want to like it! ... but should i?... i dont know if i deserve to be the thousandth liker.
999 feels lucky. or is 1000 better?
also, 'like' is such a mild and nondescrptive word for the way i feel about this song. it actually made me feel something, you know? i hope you arent so dead inside usually that you were as surprised by that as me....

  13. e.... ....

How do people give things like this a thumbs down???? Do they just go around trolling randomly or something?

    e.... ....

    Thought the same thing.

    e.... ....

It's quite possible that they didn't like the song, or this version of it. Each to his/her own.

    e.... ....

Perhaps it’s because the song’s statement against bigotry rubs bigots the wrong way? We couldn’t even talk to those who hate.

    e.... ....

I honestly find the voice a little jarring, like she was desperately gasping for air. I am not hating on the song or anything, but I can't honestly say I liked it. It made me a bit tired.
(I didn't downvote it though, of course.)

  14. p.... ....

Like how he looks at her with loving admiration

  15. B.... B....

Love this song and the whole album, it is so good!

  16. R.... T....

I have the album, highly recommend it. The incomparable Mavis Staples. Produced by Jeff Tweedy of the group Wilco

    R.... T....

Thanks, Paul Goode, what is your (American) football affiliation, if any?  Oddly, I never had any CCR album except probably a Greatest collection, if that, I always loved 'em. I just read this fan's review:  http://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/creedence_clearwater_revival/green_river/reviews/9/                                                     sounds like a MUST to add to my collection. Fave CCR  moment: was in Madrid for a semester to study Spanish, August-December 1970...we Central North Americans frequented one of the popular discos then and we'd ALL hit the dance floor for CCR's incredible 13 (?) minute extended version of "Heard It Through The Grapevine" was played, which was every night I ever went there of dozens.

    R.... T....

That's a wonderful story -- CCR is genuinely infectious. A friend who spent time in Mexico told me about kitchen workers who learned the phonetics of Have You Ever Seen The Rain and would sing it at top of their lungs whenever it came on the radio.

Re football, I bleed blue and green. BTW, I haven't lost a minute of sleep over the SB. The kid made a great play, and there's nothing to do but tip your hat to him. We'll get you next time!

    R.... T....

Great, Paul Goode we do nothing but respect the Seattle Seahawks, great defense, Beast Mode is an incredibly REAL (from Oakland) and funny person as seen before that Super Bowl, I believe, playing Clueless Gamer on Conan O'Brien with Gronk, it was LOL, whether Marshawn or Conan was more hilarious so much so that Gronkowski was just another guy in that skit! (if not on You-Tube, I'd bet that January 2015 episode is on teamcoco.com/cluelessgamer.) And, most importantly, there's no QB more talented and fun I'd rather watch than RUSSELL WILSON besides TB12. I've been living and dying, mostly the latter until the magic of 2001 with the Patriots since I was 9 years old and they were one of the first AFL teams. Just glad you're not a Jets fan, LOL. As for the Giants, they beat us in those 2 Super Bowls fair and square, Eli and the Giants' Defended were incredible in both, the best team won...

    R.... T....

The AFL Pats -- aka The Babe Parilli Era!

Marshawn was a riot on Conan O'Brien. If I were COB, I'd be begging the guy to come back. Beloved and highly respected figure in the Seahawk locker room, Lynch is very community-minded. The way he sticks up for Oakland is admirable, and he really cares about the kids there.

Russell is awfully good. He's just hitting his prime, too. You'll appreciate the extent to which New York sportswriter by the way he picked apart the Jets playing -- as one put it -- "on one leg." Something that he and Tom Brady have in common (besides beautiful spouses) is the purity of their drive to excel and to win.

    R.... T....

Yes, The Sweet Kentucky Babe, Nick Buoniconti, Hall of Famer for the Marine Mammals, not his half a dozen years with us, and Gino Cappelletti. My favorite: Jim Nance, a baby bull at 6 foot, 250 pounds, extremely big for those days another in a long line of great running backs from Syracuse, was my favorite 1960's Patriot, I believe he was the among the first AFL players to grace the cover of Sports Illstated after his 65 yard run virtually untouched vs. another AFL team, this was regular season: 1966, 8 wins 4 losses and 2 ties. Nance our best player was out injured in the loss on the last game of the regular season to Joe Namath and the Jets prevented us from facing the Chiefs, whom we had tied 24-24 in KC, for the right to go to the first Stupor Bowl. Saw them several times at Boston College's Alumni Stadium and later Fenway Park. We should continue thus discussion on another You-Tube video about football. perhaps the NFL Network's "Full Color Football: History of the AFL" on it's 50th Anniversary of The AFL, I've got a DVD copy.

  17. n.... ....

I was fortunate enough to see Mavis sing at the Williamsburg Music Hall in Brooklyn around 2 years ago, she was still great. And she sang this song too.

  18. t.... ....

What u see here is communication through music.

    t.... ....

    And it did not fail.

  19. T.... B....

    LOVE IT!!!!

  20. J.... C....

OHMYGOSH! The chemistry between these two is so beautiful.  Their souls are genuinely connecting.  They're feeling it.  The little exchanges and giggles (I LOVE where Mavis starts to sing her line early on "you're not alone" and kind of makes the "whoops!" face and they chuckle).  This is an amazing example of the healing and uniting power of music.  A middle aged white guy who played druggie rock n roll and an elderly black lady who sang gospel wouldn't be a likely pairing for some, but music transcends social barriers and finds common love. Truly beautiful in every way.

    J.... C....

+Jinx Cain  I know what you mean ....so many older people are precious ,,,,like diamonds.  A beautiful performance, a powerfully resonant voice, and an inspiring, spiritual song.    Thanks.....Steve Dunster
