Staples, Mavis - Why Am I Treated So Bad Lyrics

Why, am I treated so bad?
Why, am I treated so bad?
You know I'm all alone as I sing this song,
Hear my call, I've done nobody wrong
But I'm treated so bad

I'm gonna walk out in the master lane
Things I do, they seem to be in vain
You may be blind, you may be lame,
Walk on out in the master lane
Though you treat me so bad

Ooh ooh ooh ooooooh
Ooh ooh ooh oooooooh
Oooh ooh ooh oooooh ooh ooh oohhh
You made me blind, you may be lame
Walk on out in the master lane
Though you treat me so bad

I cannot shake the irony of all the white people who claim to love the Staple Singers. These people made beautiful music describing their confusion of the oppression we as Black people have had to face since the first day we were pushed and prodded from the slave ships. They didn't have the knowledge that organizations such as The Nation Of Islam, and the Black Panthers had, and in later years, people like the Staples clashed with the militant ideologies that led black people closer to their liberation than previous years. The slave mentality had to be changed, and the passive approach had to be done away with. I love these people, because when the fighting is done for the moment, and the blood and wounds are fresh, they are the ones who will take care of us. They may not like our position, but they'll love our spirit.

Oops! I meant 1960's. Darn, I can't correct that typo!

  28. C.... J....

Living in Chicago in the mid-960's allowed viewing of the Staple Singers on a Sunday gospel broadcast channel. Back then many greats lived on the south-side. I remember sitting at a locale restaurant where Pops was eating. I admire the Staple family for its musical contributions.

It's the story of the oppressed in this world. Simply born into a cold, unforgiving world & beat down by society for being poor & uneducated, can break a person down. A life like that is enough to make anybody cry out, "Lord, why am I treated so bad!".

  37. d.... ....

What's the meaning behind this song? I need to make a report and I'm using this song. I got the basic but I can't really unravel kt

  70. P.... M....

Pops and Hubert Sumlin took their Charlie Patton inspiration to Chicago and plugged in and rocked the world...passing the tradition to Curtis Mayfield, who did his thing. R. Kelly almost kept it real and Common showed much respect. I have high hopes for Jennifer Hudson, if she doesn't disappear from dieting. Feed your tradition and PASS IT ON Chicago.

  71. A.... B....

  75. s.... ....

@witchcerridwen "Moaning",in this manner,is your spirit connecting with God's Holy Spirit, within yourself,so that intense needs that you may not know or understand how to express in words can be deciphered and met, through your faith in the ALMIGHTY GOD,who is our Creator. Satan can not interfere with this because he has no way of knowing what our spirit and soul needs.God does.Praise our Father. It has nothing to do with "tongues".

  76. B.... ....

  82. g.... ....

My grandmother Dester White and Mr.L.Dawson use to sing this song in their gospel group back in the 60's. Mr.L.Dawson has passed on now but, my grandmother Dester White is still here and still singing these songs today. Believe it or not!We love this kind of gospel singing down here in Mississippi! The Land Boys of Millry, Alabama.

  83. J.... G....

Just saw Mavis and the band doing this song at Yoshi's in Oakland...SO glad I was there.

  84. A.... F....

Part II: One more note--I believe that NYU film student Amalie Rothchild came up with most of the film segments that were shown before and during the light show. An unofficial Fillmore theater photographer, she produced one of the most comprehensive photo records of the place, which can be seen in her marvelous photographic memoir: Live At The Fillmore East.

  85. A.... F....

Thanks for your response, macvoutie. As I recall, Bill Graham had to occasionally berate the audience not to stand, jump, or dance on the chairs as they were destroying them. It has been said that there were plenty of narcs down there as well, though they were apparently looking for those trading in harder stuff and didn't hassle the pot-heads.

  86. m.... ....

Well for starters the place was an old theater and it had very comfortable old style seats but when the house lights went down the whole auditorium reeked from the odor of reefer. It was sold in the mens room by guy's not associated with the theater.
Before the acts there was usually a cartoon or some clever film clip from the the 20's 30's or 40's.

  87. A.... F....

Wow! Tell us more about the atmosphere at Fillmore East.

  88. E.... C....

I saw Mavis perform this one at Massey Hall in Toronto the other day, such a moving piece of music and what a fuckin groove!!!

  89. J.... P....

Pops knew how to bend them strings!! RIP

  90. d.... h....

Mavis said in an interview this was MLK's favorite song by the Staple Singers.

    d.... h....

    Thats very True💯

  91. C.... V....

    this hard core testify!

  92. m.... ....

I saw them at the Filmore East long ago. Just Pops, Mavis and the sisters and thier brother. NO BACKUP BAND (I forgot who they opened for). They brought the house down. The ladies came down the aisles (Mavis shook my brothers hand). It was one of the most moving, Soulful shows I've ever seen.

  93. m.... j....

    RESPECT!!

  94. M.... G....
