Stacy Lattisaw - Attack Of The Name Game Lyrics

Attack of the name game
Attack of the name game

I was walkin' down the street keepin' time with my feet
When I heard the strangest sound
I saw a spaceship scene and a man in green
And a crowd was gathered 'round

Well, I stepped up close just to get a little dose
Of his rhymin' kind of game
Then he winked all three of eyes at me
And he said, "Did you catch my name"

It's Clack it back, I gotta Clack attack
I gotta Clee Cly Cloe the Clack a jack
Turn the Tyde, you gotta move the Myde
You gotta wham-bam funkify the Fyde with Clyde

I said, "Hey, Clyde, you're sure outside
Your rap is truly meaner
Now try some more," he said "For sure
Come on, let do Tina"

Tack it back, I gotta Tack attack
I gotta Tee Ty Toe the Tack a jack
Turn the Tina, gotta move the Mina
Gotta wham-bam funkify the Fina, Tina

Well, how 'bout Stevie
(That's easy)

Stack it back, I gotta Stack attack
I gotta Stee Sty Stoe the Stack a jack
Turn the Tevie, gotta move the Mevie
Gotta wham-bam funkify the Fevie, Stevie

Ooh... but can you do Shirley
(Why surely)

Shack it back, I gotta Shack attack
I gotta Shee Shy Shoe the Shack a jack
Turn the Tirley, gotta move the Mirley
Gotta wham-bam funkify the Firley, Shirley

Attack of the name game
Attack of the name game

I couldn't believe what he was sayin' to me
This dude sure came on hip (Hey, mama)
His threads were fine and electric lime
Was the color of his ship (Check it out)

And the rhymin' sounds that cat threw down
Were surely from above
And I said, "Why'd you come here Clyde"
And he said, "To spread some love"

I got Slack it back, I gotta Lack attack
I gotta Lee Ly Loe the Lack a jack
Turn the Tove, you gotta move the Move
Gotta wham-bam funkify the Fove with Love

Yeah, I got it
Check this out

Stack it back, I gotta Stack attack
I gotta Stee Sty Stoe the Stack a jack (That's a fact)
Turn the Tacy, gotta move the Macy
Gotta wham-bam funkify the Facy, my name is Stacy
Well, can you picture that (Right where it's at)

Now we got it, try and see
If you can do some names with me
How about Slick Rick

Slack it back, I gotta Slack attack
I gotta Slee Sly Sloe the Slack a jack
Turn the Tick Rick, gotta move the Mick Rick
Gotta wham-bam funkify the Fick Rick, Slick Rick

(I said who is this little dude)

Hey, big sis give me a shot
And I'mma gonna show you just what I got

Jack is back, I gotta Jack attack
I gotta Jee Jy Joe the Jack a jack (Get back)
Turn the Terry, gotta move the Merry
Gotta wham-bam funkify the Ferry, Jerry

Attack of the name game (You better lock up your daughter)
Attack of the name game (I'll make her do what she hadn't oughta)

(I said yo', I gotta go)
(But there's one more thing I want you to know)
(Now everybody come and take a chance)
(And all get down on this spaceman dance)

(Shooby doo bop, shooby doo wop)
(Shooby dooby dooby doo wop)
(Shooby doo bop, shooby doo wop)
(Shooby dooby dooby doo wop)

(Dooby dooby dooby dooby doo wop)
(Dooby dooby dooby doo wop)

(You're lookin' good)
(Now, now put your left foot down)
(Now put your other left foot down)
(Now put your right foot down)
(Now put your good foot down)
(And walk like this)
(Well, get down earthlings, get down)
(Now put all three hands together and clap)
(Good, a good God)
(Check it out, hey)
(Gotta split, baby)
(Goodbye)

I remember burnin this tune and my neighbors kids playing double dutch and braiding hair while I'm on the stoupe; listening to Maria's mom cuss her out in Spanish....Brooklyn...late 80s...wow

  6. D.... ....

1982? I wasn't even born in this universe yet....

  7. S.... R....

Mariah sampled and ruined this song in 1999 "Heartbreaker" (#1), featuring Jay-Z.

  8. h.... ....

Mariah who??? FLOW WITH IT STACY 👊😎

  9. b.... ....

Unpopular opinion maybe but Mariah took the beat and made it into an actual fun song. This one is boring, sorry. The singing doesn't follow the beat well IMO.

  10. F.... O....

Gosto desse som,não consigo ficar parado.

  11. M.... ....

After all this time I didn't even realize her little brother Jerry had a part in this

  12. A.... G....

I can't help it but hear the "Gimme your love" chorus from Mariah's Heartbreaker. 😂 Anyways, Mariah has good taste when sampling music, this beat is amazing. What other songs from Stacy do ya'll recommend?

  13. J.... F....

Tom Tom club did it first

  14. J.... B....

Isso é que é som de verdade, tem que ter som de qualidade hoje.

  15. m.... ....

Wow, this is the first time I search out this song and I have to admit that Heartbreaker takes a lot more from the song than I expected! More that half of what I love about Heartbreaker comes from this song....

  16. n.... ....

    Lol😂😂😂😂🙌😎💃💃💃💃💃💃❤❤❤

  17. D.... N....

    Still listening to this 2019

  18. J.... ....

    Mariah steals and ruins everything.

Jeffrey Cella She didn’t steal it you idiot, she sampled it, and there’s a difference. She gave full credit. Could this comment be any more stupid?

  22. T.... ....

At least Stacy did not steal...oops I mean sample like Mariah "sample queen" Carey did when she put a newer spin on an older original song called "the Name Game" by Miss Shirley Ellis
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MJLi5_dyn0.
Big props to my Grandmommy for teaching me about old school music!

  23. #.... d....

This song seems to be inspired (band wagoned) by the surprise huge hit of 1981 Genius of Love by Tom Tom Club. Producers and artist were hoping to create the eclectic dub, rap, toonish yet funky style that made the timeless beautiful work that had everyone asking "Who is that?" "Tom Tom ...what?" Attack is a nice effort but S.L. was young and kinda just reading through the lyrics...like....uhhhhhhh...tack? uvvv, the name gammmmme. Not her fault. She says..oh I get it....LOL but, still failed the test. (with love)

  24. G.... T....

    Absolutely awesome to here now..

  25. E.... O....

Not a bad song at all! Glad I finally came over to listen to what inspired Mariah Carey with her hit song " Heartbreaker".

  26. R.... K....

Don't ask me what bought me here

  27. T.... M....

OMG I cried when I came across this, takes me way back in the day 😘 Thanks for this 😉

  31. A.... L....

Now Stacy Lattisaw, don't forget to wave your hand goodbye, as the space allien has took off, and is leaving on a flying saucer.

  32. A.... L....

And as Attack of the Name Game has landed on earth, is Stacy Lattisaw has a space allien visitor, or is she's been possessed by the devil, just like Linda Blair has been possessed from The Exorcist?

    A.... L....

Space allien visitor 🛸, absolutely funny 😄.

  33. S.... A....

    Love you Stacy!

  40. S.... S....

She is the best I love her❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  41. L.... ....

Along with my crush on her, I had this 45 record and played it all the time! It was also a prelude to me doing my own raps later on in life! Peace!

  42. l.... w....

  48. S.... D....

    🔥💯

  49. S.... D....

  50. S.... D....

  53. m.... ....

    I'm so glad I found this...Where have I been...

  54. D.... O....

    good times

  55. K.... ....

people are seriously hating on stacy for this song being different.... she was a chILD when she made this for christ sake omg

    K.... ....

How could anyone hate this? This is such a cool song! It had a good beat and it was fun to follow the lyrics. I know of the original name game song and I actually like this one better.

    K.... ....

I had no idea Stacy had this beat done for her first!

  56. d.... h....

But who was 14 years old in the early 80's does not change at all for any new version, there are things that are forever.

  57. s.... ....

Mariah Carey's producers were smart and they knew how to make hits. Sample old hits or obscure songs that people forgot about. Literally all of Mariah's best songs have a solid sample of an older song. Tupac and Biggie's producers did the same thing.

  58. C.... C....

Wow. I never knew there was a long version of this! The single I had in my student-run high-school radio station (WIRQ-FM, West Irondequoit, NY, 1977-1981) didn't have the "Stevie" or "Shirley" raps, nor the extended "pur your left foot down" part at the end. Even so, just for fun, back then, I edited "my" copy down even futher, eliminating part of the intro and having Stacy do the "hey Clyde... let's do Tina" part *first*, and *then* the "Clack-attack..." intro of "...Clyde," only ending in "my name is Tina!" It's messed up and hilarious if you know the way the song really goes... Ah, memories.

  59. D.... B....

    She so cute..

  60. T.... G....

Music like this classic.....Nothing like Old School to start a party !

  61. a.... k....

what an Amazing Song from Stacy  incl. my fav. " Feel my love tonight "  But this one is even more very Special it has the Great Patrick Cowley on Synthis & Special Effects on it ..... ? Amazingly  he was still able in 1982 putting his Skills into this Song befor passing away  ....? RIP Patrick Cowley

  63. D.... S....

If anyone has the lyrics please post them or let me know. I'd like to do a cover of this.

  64. J.... H....

If they ever sample a song people will always try to find the original!

    J.... H....

Johny Hero That's why I love sampling you discover music that way.

    J.... H....

Could you recommend me some sampling based song which is well known

    J.... H....

@베르테르1 Mi Gente came from Voodoo Song which sampled Heila Duila Nach

  65. S.... r....

    HeartBreaker Mariah amooo

  66. 6.... ....

    Bruno jacked the flow also....

  67. P.... L....

Glad Mariah salvaged this beat; such a good beat for such a dumb, pointless song.

    P.... L....

HAHAAH, RIGHT?!!! I have to admit...people shouldn't tell Mariah to thank Stacy, Stacy should thank Mariah for turning this into a classic and not something you would hear on a children's tv show, where I imagine dancing puppets and so forth...

    P.... L....

She was 16, what do you expect?

    P.... L....

    Philip Labrado true

    P.... L....

its good she did but i loved the original this song was back in the 80's where all the breakers and boppers were using it for their routines old skull for real

    P.... L....

    Exactly my opinion.

  68. W.... B....

She was dope in the 80s..and a child prodigy is music...this is just a demo of her versatility

  69. M.... A....

i like mariah music.....my respect to the lady. but this belongs to ms stacy lattisaw. i grew up in the 80's and skating to this at roller skate land. and sounds so much better with stacy doin it. leave what's good alone....

    M.... A....

Miguel Amaral I agree and disagree. I feel sampling as long as it's done legally can bring awareness older artists to younger people. For instance I would never have bought a Parliament album if I didn't keep seeing the sample credits in my favorite hip hop album liner notes.

  70. m.... i....

I remember this in 1982...heard just a little bit of it on the radio. I never knew who it was or the name of the song. I finally figured it out in 2008. Stacy Lattisaw???? I thought it was some super rare electro freestyle tune that just didn't stay in rotation. I mean, I saw this album everywhere, didn't pay attention to it, I would have never thought Stacy Lattisaw. I spin the hell out of this at gigs now!

  71. D.... B....

    i said who's this little dude? 💜

    s.... S....

Mariah did NOT copied anyting, it's called Sampling, she gave credits to the autor of this sample. Copying is what Vanilla Ice did in Ice Ice Baby, something he was sued for.

  75. P.... M....

  83. p.... s....

when Mariah Carey was born, Stacy Lattisaw, it was veteran far superior to her ...

    p.... s....

    paulo santos ok your point.

    p.... s....

paulo santos they’re only 4 years apart

  84. P.... S....

Career ended way too soon. So much talent. Too bad music became more about looks and $ex appeal instead of actual talent. smh

    P.... S....

her voice became boring after she grew up

    P.... S....

+Supreme Ali OMG, I thought I was the only one who thought this. Her adolescent vocals made her who she was. As her voice matured and the sound of music began to change she just became another voice on the radio...

    P.... S....

@Ink Pen I was one of Stacy's greatest fans until she sang that Sweet Sixteen album. That was a dud.  But then, not many people can put out 3 good albums.  I mean, even two good masterpiece albums is a lot of original really creative songs.

    P.... S....

Patricia Smith I know u ain't saying Stacey wasn't hot? I was looking at her album cover one day and was like damn she's a little girl ,. How the fuck was I lusting off of her? Then. It dawned on me that I was a little ass boy at the time. Lol

    P.... S....

Stacy left the music business at the beginning of the 1990s. Shortly afterward, she married (still is as of 2018) and now has two children. She does gospel music now.

  85. L.... S....

Can't believe Mariah Carey took the entire song for Heartbreaker, unbelievable.

    L.... S....

    that was fantasy.

    L.... S....

Actually she just took the first two 8-counts and looped that the entire song.
And people rap over instrumentals all the time, Mariah just sang. So what?

    L.... S....

No, it was used for Fantasy

    L.... S....

    kob lobs this is heartbreaker

    L.... S....

    Supreme Ali Fantasy

  86. N.... P....

    Mariah Carey jacked this

    N.... P....

    It's called sampling

    N.... P....

I know. I was joking. lol.

  87. L.... G....

I keep waiting to the "gimme your love" part lol

    L.... G....

Luis Gomez only its not in this song.

    L.... G....

"Gimme your love" from Sylvia Striplin brought Luis Gomez here probably... and he commented the wrong song. Both are great by the way.

    L.... G....

Luis Gomez I love Stacy I was love. Her ✌🏿

    L.... G....

@A. K. No. The comment refers to the song "Heartbreaker" by Mariah Carey, which samples this song.

    L.... G....

@bookieplow Okay I get you! Makes sense. Now I recommend that you listen to "Gimme Your Love" from Sylvia Striplin, which is literally a jewel. She also has a song called "You Can't Turn Me Away" that has been sampled by Junior M.A.F.I.A for the "Get Money" track. All good songs :-)

  88. E.... D....

    maravilhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

  89. G.... ....

Gimme your love, gimme your love, gimme your love, gimme your love

  90. j.... ....

Never heard this song before or artist, the production is way ahead of its time. The late 90s RnB producers were just ripping this off, things you learn on youtube..Lets do tina!

  91. M.... ....

Wow, Mariah Carey is literally awe-inspiring. First, her sampling of this song's instrumental shows her unbelievably musical depth and knowledge, along with DJ Clue. Second, to take that sample, and compose the complex and beautiful melody of "Heartbreaker" shows her unbelievably talent as a songwriter and composer. "Heartbreaker" literally brings out the sleekness of the instrumental, taking it to the highest level. Mariah Carey is just unbelievable.

    M.... ....

Mariah Carey's song, Heartbreaker was definitely a nice use of this song as a sample. Back when Lattisaw's song came out, we didn't have all of the technology that we do nowadays that would have made this song more popular in more places. This song did not get too much air time back then. But, it was good, though. It made me smile back then.

    M.... ....

Yes, it was DJ Clue's idea. DJ Clue: "Heartbreaker" was the first one we did -- we had a mutual friend who was always saying we should do something together. I had an idea -- I always loved some Stacy Lattisaw, "Attack of the Name Game." I used to listen to it when I was young. I sampled it, and put the idea together. Once I played it for Mariah, she loved it. That's where "Heartbreaker" came from. You can read the info how they came ul with Heartbreaker here: https://www.mariahrecords.com/blog/2018/4/23/heartbreaker

    M.... ....

Not really inspiring. It means Mariah was inspired alot...smh

    M.... ....

Robyn Hines might be but Mariah's sampled version is a lot better IMO. I had never heard of this one and I love 80s songs (was born in 86) so I don't think it's a classic for sure... I'm not even a Mariah's fan but this original version seems bland in comparison. Unpopular opinion I guess. I usually prefer the original to the covers or sampled versions!

  92. G.... B....

Heartbreaker U got the BEST of me

  93. c.... ....

    What up?!

  94. e.... ....

i hated this back then...now it find it cool and am playing it loooud hahaha

  95. M.... ....

Damn.  15 years on and I didn't know that Mariah Carey took the beat from this song to do Heartbreaker??  It's time to slap myself.  Real.  Hard.

    M.... ....

whosampled-dot-com. No need to slap yourself.

  96. T.... ....

I had and LOVED this album, "Sneakin' Out."  I listened to this song over and over and over...again.  Other beautiful songs Stacy sang on this album were "Don't Throw It All Away" and "Hey There Lonely Boy."  Even the way she talks/raps is very beautiful.

Although, not on this album, "Love on a Two-Way Street" is my FAVORITE song of hers.  (Yeah, I know it's a remake, but The Moments' FALSETTO version is NOT as beautiful as Stacy's version.)  "Let Me Be Your Angel" was also very beautiful.

Stacy is six months younger than me, born in the same year, and also born 15 to 20 miles or so from where I was born, since I was born just outside of Washington, D.C. (Laurel, Maryland).  Ha!

Other coinkydinks include both my Mother's name and my name are in this song.  ( 3:37 Her brother's name "Jerry" is also my name. 1:51 Shirley, "why surely," is my Mother's name.)  Stacy Lattisaw's Mother's name is Sandra (see v=2aqJjP1GoJY), and she has a brother named Jerry.  So we see the names Sandra, Stacy, Jerry.  I'm White, but one time I was sitting on the bus between two Black girls who were flirting with me.  Their names were Sandra and Stacy.  Of course, they made the joke about the three of us being an Oreo cookie.  Hey, LITERALLY "Love on a TWO-WAY Street," Sandra, Stacy and Jerry (family names for Stacy Lattisaw).  Actually, I went out on a date one time with Sandra and her family, met her Dad, and she held my hand under the table.  Her last name was JACKSON, which is Stacy Lattisaw's married last name.  I was also friends with ALL the other members of her family (also flirted with Sandra's younger sister and even held her hand also); and yes they have a sibling named MICHAEL JACKSON.  Stacy Lattisaw toured with and opened for THE JACKSONS Triumph Tour, 1981.  She also sang songs and was friends with Johnny Gill from New Edition; my first and last initials are J.G., and Johnny Gill is 13 DAYS younger than me.  I read she has or had a recording studio in Fort Washington, MD, which is in Prince George's County, same county I was born in.  So I got all y'all Stacy Lattisaw FANS BEAT on bragging rights.  :)  LOL!

I loved it SO MUCH when LOATWS would come on the radio, and they almost always mentioned how YOUNG she was.  Those days are gone forever.

Stacy Lattisaw's singing was REAL DEAL.

As regards what songs I think were the INSPIRATION behind "Attack of the Name Game" (1982, #70 U.S. Billboard Hot 100), well, obviously "The Name Game" ("Banana-fana fo...").  In fact, "The Name Game" was written by "Shirley Ellis" and the name "Shirley" occurs in this song.

I've read some say, "Genius Of Love" was the inspiration.  Meh, don't think so.

Another inspiration I believe is The Carpenter's version of "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" (1977, #32 on U.S. Billboard Hot 100).  The alien voice at the beginning of that song has the same electronic sound, "We are observing your Earth."  "Calling Occupants" was originally written and recorded by a band named Klaatu.  That name comes from the alien Klaatu in "The Day The Earth Stood Still" (1951).  The name of the alien in Stacy's song is CLYDE, which sounds similar to KLAATU, pronounced klatoo (clyd = klat).  Stacy's SOFT chorus, "Attack of the name game" sounds similar to Karen Carpenter's SOFT chorus, "Calling occupants of interplanetary craft."  One more inspiration might have been Blondie's Rapture in which she RAPS about an ALIEN from Mars (1981, #1 U.S. Billboard Hot 100).

Funniest part: 5:35 "Now put all THREE hands together and clap."  LOL!

Thank you for the upload.  LOVE this song.

    T.... ....

TheNoChimpsBus the melody is quite similar to Genius of Love imo
