Squeeze - Rough Ride Lyrics
It looks like we're in for a rough old ride
There's no place to run there's no place to hide
No such thing as society!
Let the chips fall where they may
Affordable housing and unobtainable dream
There's nothing for you here
Why don't you move away
Compassion and loyalty are so yesterday's news
No one cares what you have to say
My children are working all hours they can
To live in this city we love
But they can't imagine a life like I've had
Seagulls follow the trawler
It's because they think sardines
Will be thrown into the sea
There's a sucker born every minute it seems
Aiming high and sinking low
Directing attention away from the trick
As every illusionist knows
Give us a home somewhere we're safe
Give us enough food on our plates
We want to stay near to our friends
We are the future you can defend
Austerity, austerity is that all you have to give to me?

Squeeze Rough Ride Comments
Squeeze Were Better Back In The 80s, Lets Face It?
A bit of a Marmite song judging by the comments but personally i love it, saw Glenn in Nantwich early in 2018, amazing gig, Squeeze have still got it.
Great to see their generation is finally appreciating what Thatcher did for them, even if they can't admit it by name
Fabulous
This album is a far cry from "Cradle to the Grave" in terms of quality. None of the tunes stand out particularly, apart from weird production choices like on this one and the lyrics seem to be taken straight out of Chris' diary. The sloppy video is kinda reflecting that as well.
Fehling1 I prefer this album much more to Cradle. Every Story is their best song in decades IMO
Departure Lounge is a beautiful, deep tune. The album isn't quite at the level of East Side Story or even Ridiculous...and some of the tunes aren't quite D&Ts best..but it is strong. It's better than Frank. And the finale Two Forks is joyful and kicking. They haven't lost the muse.
I must agree, Departure Lounge is beautiful, but apart from that there wasn't really anything on this album for me. Ok songs, yeah, but paired with even more duds or forgettable ones, like this one. Difford's lyrics have turned from witty and observing to navel-gazing and boring. A&D is literally just saying, "I have no clue how the socio-economic system works, but I think care workers should be paid more."
And as a fan of 'Frank' I can say that that is bullshit. Too many great jazzy and roots tunes on there for that statement to make sense. 'Peyton Place', 'Rose I Said', 'She Doesn't have to Shave', 'Can of Worms'... I could go on and on.
Are there still monte men tossing the broads in the streets like this? You really can't knock a mark!
Production is a bit too busy imo..
Fabulous
Not my favorite song on the album, but the video is beautiful and almost timeless.
Real love/hate relationship with this song. Melodically I really like it. Lyrically cannot stand it. I go to Squeeze for clever lyrics often with an amusing edge. A squeeze song called ‘Rough Ride’ should be about the rough ride a husband is getting from an angry wife when getting home drunk at 4am - not depressing facts that we already know and austerity.
Agree with you. They made a slight effort to improve from previous videos but still.......the subject matter bothers me as well.
They already did that on "King George Street" on Cosi Fan Tuuti Frutti.
write your own songs.... This is Squeeze...
Love the band but this song and vid are very poor. 😞
It is bland for a release and compared to last CD too.
Inspector Monkfish has fallen on hard times :(
Official video or Camden Town's CCTV from last weekend? Couldn't Difford and Tilbrook at least shoulder barge a few people Richard Ashcroft style?
Classy in every way
