Springsteen, Bruce - Valentine's Day Lyrics
I'm driving a big lazy car rushin' up the highway in the dark
I got one hand steady on the wheel and one hand's tremblin' over my heart
It's pounding baby like it's gonna bust right on through
And it ain't gonna stop till I'm alone again with you
When we spoke in his voice I could hear the light
Of the skies and the rivers the timberwolf in the pines
And that great jukebox out on Route 39
They say he travels fastest who travels alone
But tonight I miss my girl mister tonight I miss my home
Is it the sound of the leaves
Left blown by the wayside
That's got me out here on this spooky old highway tonight
Is it the cry of the river
That ain't what scares me baby
What scares me is loosin' you
They say if you die in your dreams you really die in your bed
But honey last night I dreamed my eyes rolled straight back in my head
And God's light came shinin' on through
I woke up in the darkness scared and breathin' and born anew
It wasn't the cold river bottom I felt rushing over me
It wasn't the bitterness of a dream that didn't come true
It wasn't the wind in the grey fields I felt rushing through my arms
No no baby it was you
So hold me close honey say you're forever mine
And tell me you'll be my lonely valentine

Springsteen, Bruce Valentine's Day Comments
Beautiful song and lyrics 💞💞
My best friend died one year ago Jan. 29th. This song pulls me out of deaths fog. So much so I know all the words and how Bruce sings it. Its not a easy song to sing. Must be over 400 times now at least. Tunnel of Love the whole album for me is where I go when i 'am hurting. I love and thank God Bruce made this album. Thanks Bruce.
I miss her so much
This is the best song x
4:33 that synthesizer that starts playing is beautiful
Truly brilliant
Tunnel of love is a masterpiece from start to finish
What a great song
Bruce going on Don Henley on this one 😄
Fue el 1er disco q me engancho al boss... Luego vinieron todos. Quiza su ultimo gran album, x poco con the rising.
Why this song was never released as a single, I will never understand. First time I heard, I was crying by the songs end. It's that perfect.
Those lyrics are great
Someday we'll see outside of 3d.
Your home misses you😙
Stunningly beautiful song. I've never forgotten it ever since I first heard it when I bought the "Tunnel of Love" album on cassette tape back in 1987. I still find myself quietly humming this melody from time to time.
A beautiful song! He sings it as though he has felt this way before!🎶💕🎸💋
💞💕💔Love Bruce...listening on Val day today....perfect
Anyone else always listen to this every Valentines Day? Been doing it for over 30 years now.
Baby it was you
The Undisputed Truth
What's hard about being a Springsteen fan is this: for a very long time you were the character in every song, you were the guy defiantly saying "hey mister" to anyone listening. But then, as time passed, you weren't that character anymore...you looked up one day and realized you had become the "mister." The song isn't about you anymore. You are too old for that. You are the spectator now, not the hero.
You suck! Truth teller for sure. But thanks for reminding me! Awesome observation.
word.to the truth
Best Springsteen album
“Is it the cry of the river?
Or the moonlight shining through?
That ain’t what scares me baby
What scares me is losing you...”
Awesome line
Could be his best song.
The Undisputed Truth
i love the ending ......
"They say he who travels fastest is he travels alone" is a brilliant line. Perfectly sums up what men desire from life - either their own material success or choose the slower but ultimately more satisfying focus of love and family.
I really love this beautifully hypnotic, romantic love song, in which a man expresses his feeling for the lady he cares for most. Honest, profound love between two people is what matters most in this troubled world.
Nebraska...is it warm there in winter...
My husband just loves this song!
great song writing
Can`t stop lisinig it <3
What a beautiful song ! Love it !
Does anyone else notice that this song is the perfect compliment to The River (song)? The lyrics to both of these Springsteen masterpieces use the imagery of a river while the narrator reflects on dreams that don't come true. From The River: "Is a dream a lie if it don't come true? Or is it something worse that sends me down to the river though I know the river is dry?" From Valentine's Day: "It wasn't the cold river bottom I felt rushing over me. It wasn't the bitterness of a dream that didn't come true." I like the idea of a narrator to both of these songs being the same man at different points in his life.
Never noticed that. That is really cool!

"Baby...it was YOU"
My favorite Bruce album!
Stunningly beautiful song. I've never forgotten it ever since I first heard it when I bought the "Tunnel of Love" album on cassette tape back in 1987. I still find myself quietly humming this melody from time to time.
I recently sort of "rediscovered" Tunnel of Love. I love the songs now more than ever. This song in particular brings tears to my eyes.
Happy Valentine's Day - 2017
sweet song.
this album shakes my soul everytime i hear it. I think the reason it's so deep is because he went through that painful divorce with julieanne, she wanted a career & he was ready to have a family, then he fell in love with patti, i still remember being 17 & watching them sing it live in front of thousands of people yet to see them looking into each others eyes they could've been the only people in the room, the whole stadium were witnessing them falling in love, it was really beautiful, as a fan i was elated to know he'd finally found happiness & was starting a family. They must be happy because they're still going strong.
This was the first Bruce Springsteen album I ever bought (yes, vinyl). I was in my early 20s. I didn't understand it; it was too much for me at the time. Now, it is one of my favorite albums of all time. One has to have a level of life experience to understand and appreciate how great this album is. Listening to it makes me cry, though. But that's a good thing.
first time i heard this in many many years and how i am glad i found it again
what scares me is losing you
no es resentimiento, cuando el amor se va , se va y no vuelve, y es entonces cuando recuerdas lo maravilloso que era y lo feliz que te hacía...
My favorite song along with Brilliant Disguise off what to me is his best album. He wasn't writing stadium shaking anthem music, just simple introspective songs, with absolutely poetic lyrics.
it's an absolute Brilliant album
your a gentlemen and a scholar
It is his best album in terms of writing but Darkness is the best in my opinion in terms of overall conception! One Step Up and Walk Like A Man are my favourite songs from this album.
siempre te recordaré
I will never get you off my mind 💙
Tunnel of love album, One of my favorites. Love you Bruce!

I am a 40+ year fan. This is one of his best albums. I play it all the time. Beautiful ....... thanks for many years of joy...
Me and my dad were up the mountains and this came on and he was saying the same thing. He has been a fan for 40 years and me about 25 . We both got goosebumps listening to it and this album is very underrated.
Stops me in my tracks everytime I hear it... for the past almost 30 years. One of Bruce's absolute best.
hauntingly beautiful
me too....hauntingly gorgeous
Boss - you did it on this song. I can't stop listening to it. This song would steal any girl's ❤
Not many songwriters can paint such a vivid picture with words, but Bruce does it over and over again and this is one of his very, very best examples of that. This one gets me every time I hear it. So atmospheric, so full of emotion that just emanates from every line. Thanks for this one, Bruce and Ryan for posting.
I.M A OVER THE ROAD TRUCK DRIVER .I PLAYED THE HELL OUT OF THIS SONG ON MY WAY BACK HOME
The "Tunnel of Love " Album a Masterpiece .........

Love this song - and just dedicated to my new GF
+Scott Egge I just did, worked very well.
+S Hurd like
Should have mentioned that mom bought Tunnel on cassette when it came out. I was about 14 and we had been abandoned by my sperm donor. So many songs on this album have such strong emotions that they are almost painful for me to listen to very often. That said this one was and is so beautiful that it has stayed in my mind and heart all these years. And while I dedicated "Ain't got you" to a new gf once or thrice I kept this to myself. So when I recently met someone very special thru happenstance I finally shared it, The reaction was incredible.
+Steven Hurd unfortunately the girl I would have loved to share this with I lost. As much as I love this song it's bittersweet. Like yourself I also have a family connection with Bruce. Either love this song
Which is better.. the song or the holiday?
sadly these days ,the song.
for you all...
Man, such an underrated, beautiful song. I'd kill for an instrumental version or an official tab. It's the bosses best song in my opinion.
Love this song anyone tell me what the organ is B4?
James Lloyd or is it B3??
I agree with those who say it's one of his most underrated songs.
dean b this and wreck on the highway from the river
Charles Bonilla both songs are great closers to great albums
My fav Bruce song. So seldom heard, so beautiful, evocative and underrated. Gets me every time.
Words cannot describe how good this song is. But its not like we have to. We can listen to it and just understand. So beautiful!
This whole lp is hard for me to listen to. I went through a very emotional devorce when this came out. Every song hits home with me on this one. I'm born & breed in NJ. Big fan of Bruce, and so was my ex wife. I could feel his pain & emotion in this lp, i was going through the same thing. It opens up old wounds.
+Alice Afterrabit Xo Alice..... he's simply living in his parent' basement, and a bit lonely
+billy smith don't be a troll
Tunnel of Love, the little talked about masterpiece. I hadn't listened to it in a year and Lonely Valentine closes out the record. I had to pull my car over and gather my thoughts. The song is like a warm desert breeze that blows gently across your soul and then those feelings of longing just wash over you. It stops you in your tracks and you feel joy and sadness in the same moment.
This is what great song writing is all about.
@will buckley GOOD STUFF...this album is my own private salvation and always will be
Will, that is such an accurate description of how this song makes you feel....
will buckley it is such a great album/CD. Love it so much
will buckley great description of the way this song feels
that is so beautifully put
I love all Bruce's songs but man his slower songs are what really get to me. This song really hits hard.
This is a very underrated song & it's also one of my favorites. I've love this song since I first heard it back in 1990.
thank you, Ryan... yes.. a deep beauty of carefulness.. and careful hope... great piece of Bruce...

Sea Bright?
man, i listened to this album in Iraq when my wife told me not to come home. Talk about a dark place.
So,so sorry to read this.I hope you find happiness in future.
What did you do to her before😕❓are you still alive😯❓have you found someone new😳👍
simplemente THE BOSS!!!!!!!
Perfect closer for a very great album.
Yes indeed
Bruce Springsteen's music by it's very nature is political. That's what makes it so great. Remember everything is political. I guess you were born down in a dead mans town.
When Bruce sings "a friend of mine became father last night" he's talking about his good friend John Landau. The night Bruce wrote the song he had a concert somewhere and his friend John didn't go because he was at the hospital where his daughter was born. Moments later they had a phone conversation and Bruce incorporated that memory into his song. That's a great gift to a friend, even if he doesn't name him.
Cataldo Leone Where did you read this piece of information?
This songs brings me to tears everytime I hear it. EVERY TIME!!
