I brought this album for I had been missing his songs 8 years ago.

My fav. Springsteen song. Although it was created in honor of the brave men who saved lives in 9/11; it gives me strength after the massive Earthquake in México from 9/19/17. Thank you Mr. Springsteen for this beautiful song. An anthem for the brave ones.

Because the song is about a man facing death and the last verse is about his final minutes and thoughts before he dies and enters heaven. Each line is him getting closer and closer and the last line "sky of longing and emptiness" is his death, followed by "sky of fullness, sky of blessed life" which is him entering heaven.. That's why there's the sudden drastic change into something positive.

For me, the solo depicts the second plane going into the south tower of the trade center and the fire trucks responding with full speed across the brooklyn bridge. I don't know why. But ever since i heard that solo i always think of that since the song is about a FDNY firefighter responding on 9/11 and what he sees and lives through on that horrible day.

Check the lyrics again. "Spirits above and behind me... faces gone black eyes burning bright". He speaks of standing before the Lord's fiery light. And the character singing the song is one of the firemen who responded to the Twin Towers on 9/11, as is evident in the first verse. He has a vision of his wife and "holy pictures of our children dancing in a sky filled with light." His life is flashing before his eyes in his final moments. Love this song... just can't see it as a campaign song.

the song is about a firefighter who drives across the Brooklyn Bridge on 9/11. It was been inspired by the true story (and famous photo) of the one fire truck driving across the bridge toward the fire that day. Oddly enough, Pete Davidson's father was on that particular truck.

this was President Obama's campaign song. It's horribly depressing to listen to it now and think of how hopeful everyone was, how it felt like things were going to change... and now it's 2012 and the world is the same.
