Springsteen, Bruce - Living Proof Lyrics

Well now on a summer night in a dusky room
Come a little piece of the Lord's undying light
Crying like he swallowed the fiery moon
In his mother's arms it was all the beauty I could take
Like the missing words to some prayer that I could never make
In a world so hard and dirty so fouled and confused
Searching for a little bit of God's mercy
I found living proof

I put my heart and soul I put 'em high upon a shelf
Right next to the faith the faith that I'd lost in myself
I went down into the desert city
Just tryin' so hard to shed my skin
I crawled deep into some kind of darkness
Lookin' to burn out every trace of who I'd been
You do some sad sad things baby
When it's you you're tryin' to lose
You do some sad and hurtful things
I've seen living proof

You shot through my anger and rage
To show me my prison was just an open cage
There were no keys no guards
Just one frightened man and some old shadows for bars

Well now all that's sure on the boulevard
Is that life is just a house of cards
As fragile as each and every breath
Of this boy sleepin' in our bed
Tonight let's lie beneath the eaves
Just a close band of happy thieves
And when that train comes we'll get on board
And steal what we can from the treasures treasures of the Lord
It's been a long long drought baby
Tonight the rain's pourin' down on our roof
Looking for a little bit of God's mercy
I found living proof

Springsteen, Bruce Living Proof Comments
  1. T.... ....

Springsteen, as he often does, expresses an eternal truth by taking us into his own psyche in the wake of a very difficult period in his personal life. By speaking to himself in his music, he speaks to us all.

    The Boss!!!!!!

You shot through my anger and my rage
Showed my prison was just an old open cage
There were no keys no guards
Just one frightened man and some old shadows for bars

Up there with any lines he has ever written, anyone suffering from Anxiety or Depression will feel every single word of that like a hammer.

    g.... ....

Yes, but the song is about how the birth of his first son affected that.

  4. D.... B....

This is probably the only song from Springsteens Human Touch/Lucky Town period worth listening to. I am glad he re visited this when he reunited with the E Street Band. Springsteen admitted this period in his life creatively was a mistake, because he was writing about how great his life was at the time, and that's not what his fans wanted to hear. Although I agree with all of that, this song although optimistic works because it's about a subject matter that is important to Springsteen being a father and having a family. I wish he would re record this with the E Street Band.

If you have ever suffered from depression listen to these lyrics and know that Springsteen has as well. Enormously underrated song.

    L.... M....

The song is about the birth of his first son, not his depression.

  13. D.... ....

Dare I say it, his most awesome song

    D.... ....

this song is my personal favorite

    D.... ....

I think that every single one of Bruces' songs is regarded by someone as his "Most Awesome" Don't think that he's ever written a bad one. My own favourites go back to "Lost in the flood" + "The Fever" (from the Lost Radio Show) in fact, anything from his first Seven albums. Peace. Bruuuuuuuuce!!!

  14. R.... ....

I can hear some Bowie in this track

    R.... ....

    You better get isten again

I remember buying Lucky Town and Human touch many years ago. Lucky Town was, in my opinion, the better of the two. This song is a really good one. Very much overlooked in preference to the much more commercial Human Touch. These two albums, Tunnel of Love, born to run. and The Rising, were the best he ever did.

    j.... ....

    nebraska

    j.... ....

The best album of the Boss?
    NEBRASKA!
    Hush!

    j.... ....

you ever see him play the whole album live by himself acoustic.BRILLIANT

    j.... ....

I love The Boss but Human Touch is an awful album start to finish. Lucky Town and this were the only good songs on this album.

  19. M.... L....

    i like this song

  20. L.... M....

the guitar intro is very similar with the song ''Better Days''!! 0:04 haha THE BOSS

  21. B.... ....

Bruce should release more "guitar" songs like this one.

  22. P.... ....

How does he know what I think?

  23. v.... ....

This is a beautiful song for anyone anyone who is a father.

  24. M.... ....

    Massive great!

  25. D.... M....

And sounds even better if you've also been through a bad break-up and been rescued. The lyrics are vital - you have to go through the journey with him. Underrated? You bet - for me it's one of the five best Springsteen songs (my other choices being much more obvious favourites).

  26. P.... H....

It also sounds a lot better if you're a father :)

  27. G.... D....

Only mediocre by Springsteens amazing standards & if you actually listen to them 20yrs later they are not nearly as mediocre as you & others make out!

  28. a.... ....

aaah, this song really gives me "the feeling" if you know what i mean.. The Boss<3

    a.... ....

anner92 boss time !! Feel you brother.

  29. R.... ....

@pastie66 I can't say that. But among Springsteen songs it is extremely underrated. It is a gem buried in all those songs from those two CDs released simultaneously. Most of which really were mediocre.
