Springsteen, Bruce - Incident On 57th Street Lyrics

Spanish Johnny drove in from the underworld last night
With bruised arms and broken rhythm and a beat-up old Buick but dressed just like dynamite
He tried sellin' his heart to the hard girls over on Easy Street
But they said, "Johnny, it falls apart so easily, and you know hearts these days are cheap"
And the pimps swung their axes and said, "Johnny, you're a cheater"
And the pimps swung their axes and said, "Johnny, you're a liar"
And from out of the shadows came a young girl's voice, said, "Johnny, don't cry"
Puerto Rican Jane, oh, won't you tell me, what's your name?
I want to drive you down to the other side of town
Where paradise ain't so crowded and there'll be action goin' down on Shanty Lane tonight
All the golden-heeled fairies in a real bitch-fight
Pull .38's and kiss their girls goodnight

Goodnight, it's alright, Jane
Now let them black boys in to light the soul flame
We may find it out on the street tonight, baby
Or we may walk until the daylight, maybe

Well, like a cool Romeo he made his moves, oh, she looked so fine
Like a late Juliet, she knew he'd never be true but then, she really didn't mind
Upstairs a band was playin' and the singer was singin' something about going home
She whispered, "Spanish Johnny, you can leave me tonight, but just don't leave me alone"
And Johnny cried, "Puerto Rican Jane, word is down, the cops have found the vein"
Them barefoot boys left their homes for the woods
Them little barefoot street boys, they said their homes ain't no good
They left the corners, threw away their switchblade knives and kissed each other goodbye

Johnny was sittin' on the fire escape, watchin' the kids playin' down the street
He called down, "Hey little heroes, summer's long, but I guess it ain't very sweet around here anymore"
Janey sleeps in sheets damp with sweat
Johnny sits up alone and watches her dream on, dream on
And the sister prays for lost souls, then breaks down in the chapel after everyone's gone

Jane moves over to share her pillow but opens her eyes to see Johnny up and putting his clothes on
She says, "Those romantic young boys, all they ever want to do is fight
Those romantic young boys, they're callin' through the window
Hey, Spanish Johnny, you want to make a little easy money tonight?"

And Johnny whispered, "Goodnight, it's all tight, Jane
I'll meet you tomorrow night on Lover's Lane
We may find it out on the street tonight, now, baby
Or we may walk until the daylight, maybe"
Goodnight, it's alright, Jane
I'm gonna meet you tomorrow night on Lover's Lane
We can find it out on the street tonight, now, baby
Or we may walk until the daylight, maybe

1975 I was 13 years old. My buddies older brother, 16, pulled out a record and put it on the record player. A second or two later I began to hear the pounding of the drums and the intro to Born to Run. It captivated me and I said, "WHO'S THAT!". He yelled, "THAT'S BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN".

  15. S.... P....

My favorite version of “Incident”. Been a Springsteen fan since I was a sophomore at Seton Hall in ‘75 and first saw him live. More than once Double parked my car and ran through the streets of Passaic to get tics at the Capitol Theatre. WNEW would announce “ tickets go on sale .....NOW”. Quite memorable when he would show up in Asbury clubs in the middle of winter when crowds were small. I could go on and on......

  16. e.... ....

    Ahhhh.... Brilliant.......

  22. S.... O....

Cant believe the lack of likes for this. This reduces me to ALMOST tears, lol, so so so beautiful, this taps into everything that makes us human and I fucking love it so much. Thanks Bruce.

  23. i.... ....

Have to thank my friend Paolo for convincing me to drive down from Paris to Barcelona after the October 14 show despite us having no tickets, and a show planned ahead for Bologna on the 18th... did get tickets outside Palau St Jordi, were in - and listening to this was worth the 2000 extra km driven. Thank you.

  24. W.... ....

might be a dumb question, is this part of a trilogy of Meeting Across the River and Jungleland?

    W.... ....

Not really...On the Wild and Innocent album this was the first of a trilogy of tracks seamlessly connected on the original vinyl, Incident to Rosalita to (my favorite) NYC Serenade. Was this a precursor to the masterpiece that is Jungleland? Definitely.

  25. K.... G....

    A timeless masterpiece

  26. V.... L....

    Pure piece of poetry...

  27. B.... G....

It makes me so sad that my generation will never grow to appreciate the beauty of real music like this. Truly the greatest songwriter and live entertainer of all time

  31. C.... D....

still on of my favorite BS song songs from a time long gone

  32. M.... w....

This is my favorite Bruce song - right behind about twenty others. Can you believe how many great songs Springsteen's written. No wonder he has a hard time with mundane reality - when he performs he goes so deep inside - to a place most of us can't fathom - and becomes the song - not just a singer of some words.

  33. r.... b....

i,m a huge fan of bruce , but i didnt know this song ..... its make me feel good , even its a sad song , isnt it? my heart is crying now ..... i love this song very .

    r.... b....

Play the whole Wild and Innocent album...It's brilliant in a very different way from most of the albums that followed.

  35. M.... H....

  38. D.... M....

We are so blessed to have this man in our lives. He's a genius and one of a kind. Thanks for all the great memories Bruce.

  39. P.... W....

Such a soulful, beautiful, intimate ballad - written by the people's poet laureate. Springsteen is the voice of many generations. This Barcelona concert seems to be one of the most epic of all time. Long live The Boss!

  40. M.... ....

    The Boss Xx.

  41. G.... C....

The critics? No, I have nothing but compassion for them. How can I hate the crippled, the mentally deficient, and the dead?

  42. V.... S....

    ❤ you always Bruce.

  43. r.... b....

WOW...so incredible, I have carried this song with me for the last 30 yrs. So blessed to have had Bruce in my life...

  44. d.... n....

    America's greatest singer songwriter.
Sorry Bob Dylan. The Boss is better.

    d.... n....

Our great America has produced almost all the greatest music . All the world is in awe of Bruce and Bob!

    d.... n....

@Martin Wilhelm bollocks what about the Beatles

    d.... n....

I'm a huge Springsteen fan, and I never really got into Dylan, but I'm gonna dissent. In this first five years or so of his fame, Dylan wrote some truly timeless songs...Bruce's are completely different and great in their own way, and there's no other live performer who can touch him, but when we exclude everything else but songwriting, I give Dylan a slight edge.

    d.... n....

@Dave Lonergan Beatles were great at writing 'popular' songs. Simple. Catchy. Very easy to understand. Especially Paul. John's writing was quite a bit deeper. And they kicked it off for everyone to follow! But nobody comes close to Bruce and Bob's writing. It's a huge drop after those two.

  45. t.... ....

    Holy crap!

  46. S.... A....

Best version of this song EVER. Live accoustic piano. Priceless. Listened to the Boss for 20 years now and I still haven't seen them live. Number one on my bucket list.

    S.... A....

Stewart, go dude, you'll never forget Springsteen live. Go!

  47. D.... M....

    None better!

  48. F.... B....

Bruce turns 70 this September 29th (born in 1949). Lets give him a huge Birthday and let him know how much he means to us now while he is with us. Organize your friends and family, call in to radio shows, email your representatives. Share it on Facebook. Shout it on Twitter.

  49. D.... D....

One of the most beautiful songs and I never thought to look on youtube until now
Thanks to Gerry Ryan and the RTE2 night train for the nights I listened to this

  50. J.... R....

OMG I wasn't aware that the boss could even play piano good song

    J.... R....

Johnny Ringo he probably learned to play the piano in 2 days. Music comes naturally to talented musicians like Springsteen.

  51. J.... R....

Bruce Springsteen is such an unusual Rockstar not flashy not eccentric and very humble in addition to being a fantastic songwriter

  52. d.... d....

    Amazing!!!

  53. S.... M....

I get misty every time I hear this song. Well done indeed!

  60. B.... G....

    There is only one Bruce
I listened to this guy from 4 years old
Fell in love with the music straight away
Got my dad to buy me a tunnel of love t shirt from a shop in Blackpool
    It was way too big
I wore it every day !
The guy paints the best picture
    Love struggle romance
    True love
    The best artist

    B.... G....

    I'm 39 now

    B.... G....

@Barry Greenwood I got the t-shirt from the Tunnel of Love tour. Still got it. Saw him in Birmingham and Sheffield.

I remember we had to park the car in a field miles away from Bramall Lane. It was pitch dark when we got back to the car park, and I thought I'd never find the car.

  65. U.... L....

Will never forget the moment, when I heared this song for the first time...
    Great lines, great performance.

  66. M.... W....

The lyrics entrance me. Bruce's piano playing is exquisite.

  67. k.... ....

At what point did he start singing with a western twang? I hate it. It doesn't sound genuine to me. He had a Northeastern accent in all these early songs.

  68. J.... F....

That's better than the album version. The soul in the lyrics is better stripped down. That can be said for a ton of Springsteen songs. He writes such great words. One of my favorites....

  69. R.... D....

Absolutely stunning...'Goodnight, it's all right Jane. I'll meet you tomorrow night on Lover's Lane'

that's cute......I am 74 this year and I just "discovered" Bruce's music a few months ago, have almost everything he's done now, when and how did he learn to pay piano?? Love him, and Patti too.

I was there too. In fact he played The Fox twice within a year or so. I'd been to many concerts there (Otis, James Brown, Paul Revere and the Raiders and many others). But Bruce was unlike any I'd seen, or maybe the world had seen. 4 hours non-stop. Crowd going crazy. His sings kept buzzing in my head for days afterward. Rabid fan ever since, needless to say..

If only it could happen again!!! The greatest rock n roll band this world will have ever known.

Same as me. Discovered him when I was 61, making up for lost time. Seen him five times so far.

I did not know he played piano...awesome..the boss!!!!!!!!

    C.... D....

Great musicians can pick up any instrument and learn to play it in no time.

    C.... D....

Over the years he has written many of his best songs from the piano.

    C.... D....

There are such excellent musicians in the E Street Band that Bruce's own accomplishments fade into the background... he plays the piano, but then there's Roy Bittan who REALLY plays piano...
    :-)

Good Night, it‘s alright, Janey. One of the best Boss tunes. Solo piano is always priceless.
