Springsteen, Bruce - Factory Lyrics

Early in the morning factory whistle blows,
Man rises from bed and puts on his clothes,
Man takes his lunch, walks out in the morning light,
It's the working, the working, just the working life.

Through the mansions of fear, through the mansions of pain,
I see my daddy walking through them factory gates in the rain,
Factory takes his hearing, factory gives him life,
The working, the working, just the working life.

End of the day, factory whistle cries,
Men walk through these gates with death in their eyes.
And you just better believe, boy,
somebody's gonna get hurt tonight,
It's the working, the working, just the working life.

Springsteen, Bruce Factory Comments
  1. K.... M....

Feeling this tonight boss man. The work.

  2. M.... V....

He's no Kurt Ostbahn, but still a good song. ;)

  3. B.... H....

Bruce's humming at the end of this song really hits home the intense emotion of it.

  4. A.... T....

One of his best songs. If you don't like it you have no heart or empathy with ordinary people.

  5. N.... H....

OMG totally reminds me of my dad. He was a bridge painter in New York. However he did have a good union. This song is for those who had it rough.

    N.... H....

Workers need uniting now more than ever. We are in a dark place. People literally piss in bottle to stay "productive enough". Unions are all but busted. Its sad.

  6. W.... ....

In the UK, it seems that the fact that people worked at abnormally low wages was revealed. An estimated 400 foreigners were working at less than 75 cents a day.

  7. J.... K....

I am American but I can say Americans are not that good a worker. A Mexican could work a 12 shift 365 days a year outside in 100'F.

    J.... K....

@Jacob Kauffman I'm sorry, but you clearly have a difficult time communicating of it is.
So.. their(Americans) late retirement is due to their inability to save money. That has nothing to do with work ethic.

    J.... K....

@Jared Copeland It accumulates to it. They cannot save becuase they are only willing to work part time hours. 40

    J.... K....

@Jacob Kauffman because generally an American worker is more productive meaning they don't need to work as many hours. They also get paid more, but have poor spending habits. This still had nothing to do with work ethic. You really are a special person.

    J.... K....

@Jared CopelandThank you for the compliment. It has everything to do with it. You go and see for yourself, all day anyday. Mcdonalds fro for example-Go through a drive through and at the intercom. Jist listen to the low work ethic in the workers voice. 99.9% of hourly workers are clock watching to finish the job for the day. A good work ethic to me would be wanting to stay behind for your manager for 3 hours witbout pay if need be.

    J.... K....

Working for no pay i s considered SLAVE labor. You are a special kind of stupid if you think someone should work for no pay. Fucking idiot. @Jacob Kauffman

  8. P.... B....

To be honest, Bruce had the talent to write even better songs than he actually ended up writing. This song is a proof.

  9. A.... W....

My dad going into the factory 100 yards from our house every day.

  10. P.... D....

Tunescribers has created sheet music for this, you can find it here: https://www.tunescribers.com/3000/more-work-samples/factory

Right now, I'm working my way through the Springsteen biography... in audio, because having Bruce read it is a huge bonus... and I'm stopping along the way to (re)listen to all his albums in order, as he talks about recording them. I'm on "Human Touch"... which I admit I pretty much ignored when it came out. It's actually a damn fine record. Up until now, I've been a dedicated fan of the first four albums... and still hold them up as some of the most perfect rock ever recorded, this album in the video included (of course)... but the other stuff is amazing too. Springsteen is one of the finest songwriters/musicians/showman this business will ever see. We're lucky to have shared space on the same timeline. Seriously. Goddamn.

  12. K.... K....

Why do i like it so much?!

  13. L.... W....

I used to work in a factory. It was nothing like this song. Plus Bruce Springsteen has a really bad voice

  14. C.... P....

This is one of Bruce's most under rated songs. I wish there were more verses, it's that moving.

  15. R.... ....

Another song for us working men. Thanks, boss.

  16. W.... B....

es is no finsta und do hea i eam scho, ea red nix und huasd vü... Ostbahn!:-)

  18. J.... W....

    My dads favorite Bruce song

  19. F.... D....

I can remember as a small boy walking to the factory gate at Congoleum with my moth to give my father his lunch. He worked lots of overtime and sometimes it was the only chance I could see him that day. I lost my father when I was ten years old and this song reminds me of the days when my mother an I met him almost daily just to say hi and hove him lunch at the gate.

    F.... D....

Frank Dolski Sorry for your loss.

    F.... D....

Sorry for your loss, I'm sure he was working to provide a future for you.i pray you are successful and healthy from his sacrifice.

  20. M.... ....

This is hands down the most depressing song ever written.

  21. g.... ....

Listen to the "Flying Pickets" version and then tell me which one you like better.

  22. a.... a....

Esta buena canción la compuso BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN y la canto en el año 1978

  23. t.... c....

dad, my father's a supervisor with a "rain man" head you know the movie with Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise
without being an idiot savant while in his brain add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers in his head while living to 97 years!

  24. A.... D....

  31. T.... E....

This sums up my life I work in a factory that makes tires 12 hour shifts so it hits home

    T.... E....

I did too. 12 hour night shifts. I've never worked so hard for so little money. Took so much comfort in this song.

    T.... E....

I remember when I had a part time job.

  32. t.... ....

Labor Day,2016-from when Bruce was one of us.

  33. T.... ....

It's too bad most of these jobs are long gone. I worked the factory thing and the warehouse thing when I was younger, the factories are mostly gone and the warehouse jobs are tough to get. Glad I moved on and am in the service industry.

    T.... ....

TheSeeker1960 I'm an independent truck driver and this song hits home for me as well, this song speaks to all of us blue collar guys!! Love the Boss knows how to tell a story

    T.... ....

You still got roofers, painters, barn builders, remodelers, etc, etc, etc. Still plenty of us blue collar workers who totally relate to this great song.

    Thank You JON :)

  45. J.... ....

sounds a lot like "Come on (Let's Go Tonight)"

    J.... ....

that was the original version of the song, but he then changed the lyrics and it became "Factory".
