Springsteen, Bruce - Brothers Under The Bridges ('83) Lyrics

Every spring when the weather gets warm
They come pourin' into town straight off of them farms
Driving 455s running hard and strong
They'd scratch built in them tool sheds all winter long
'Neath the trestles drinkin' the beer and the wine
Now some came to run, some just to pass the time
With the brothers under the bridges

Me and Tommy we was just fourteen, didn't have our licenses yet
Our walls were covered with pictures of cars we'd get
We'd listen and wait for that highway to rumble and quake
As they drove in through town when the weekend'd break
Bringin' girls with that distant look in their eyes
Now together 'neath the trestles they'd be laughing in the night
With the brothers under the bridges

Well me and my brother'd hitched a ride in Joey's pickup to the edge of town
And we watched from the tall grass as the challenges were made and the duels went down
We'd hitchhike back home, sneak in, get in bed before our mom'd come
And we'd lay there in the night talkin' about how we might someday be one
Yeah someday run with the brothers under the bridges

Well now I hear a cry in the distance and the sound of marching feet come and gone
Well I'm stittin' down here by this highway figuring, figuring just where I belong
Tonight up on Signal Hill
I watch a young man in a red shirt walking through a night so still
Put his jacket 'round his girl as the autumn wind send a chill
Through the brothers under the bridges

    Thanks Bruce ;-)

  2. C.... H....

Cars, women, and growing up around men that built hot rods. What else is there?

  3. l.... ....

    is there a live version?

    l.... ....

I don't think they ever played it live. Such a shame, particularly with the sax part. RIP Big Man

  4. M.... P....

    Subpar cheesy 80s Boss.

  5. C.... A....

Happy birthday brother, wherever you are #oorah

  6. F.... M....

how this didn't make it onto BITUSA is one of the great mysteries, like how the pyrimids were built

  7. R.... B....

    some live version of this?

  8. L.... K....

Hey, you two who didn't like this song: clean out your ears :-P

  9. T.... ....

This song is like No Surrender and Bobby Jean combined together. Once I read that Bruce never liked this song. I don't know why.

    T.... ....

+TtarArm Except it's better than those two songs.

    T.... ....

+William Mark Dyer I can't say which one is better. I like three of them.

    T.... ....

this song is definitely much better then both

His best car song ever!  Reminds me of Rt 78, Berkeley Heights, NJ.  Late 70s-early 80s.  They were unable to complete the highway where it went through the Watchung Reservation for many years.  My older brothers used to take me down there where a drag strip was set-up on the unfinished highway. Everyone hung out under the trestles while the duels went down...Thanks for the memories, Boss!

  11. I.... C....

You've always got something to say figgsy.

  12. I.... S....

amazing song.tank you Bruce for your music

  13. J.... ....

That first warm(ish) sunny Saturday afternoon every March...  This is my song!

  14. B.... ....

It baffles me that Bruce would hide stuff like this away, instead of putting it on the line, bringing it up on tours and what not. Such a happy party jumper!

  15. W.... M....

Bruce at his greatest in the early 80's. Sharp as a tack. Still mysterious.

  16. A.... O....

fantastic!! I really really love this song.So many good vibes!!

  17. K.... ....

This is my alltime favorite bruce springsteen song. Makes me think about spending summers as a kid with my best friends without a care in the world.

  18. J.... P....

Awesome song. Just wish he would play it live.

  19. m.... p....

one of my all time favorites strong lyrics put a chill in my spine

  20. g.... ....

    LEGEND......

  21. g.... ....

    LEGGEND...

  22. c.... ....

It is surely a comment on Bruce's genius that a song as wonderful as this one had been long relegated to his vaults, only receiving release on a compilation years after it was recorded...how many other artists could afford to throw away a song this fucking good?

  23. s.... ....

This is such a great song. And, I've thought about that, too. If there was no Bruce, say if Born To Run didn't become a hit and CBS dropped him, there would be a hole in my life that I wouldn't even know was there.

  24. T.... ....

What a gorgeous song about childhood friendship; and Gary's Bass going like a machine gun. Absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Thanks Bruce, I cant imagine how empty my life would have been without your music.

  25. P.... ....

@billybillyboab Not a snub. It appeals to the strong, silent type.

  26. c.... ....

what a wonderfull track. Could easily have found its place on Born in the USA

  27. C.... S....

It's never been played live ... unfortunately.

  28. m.... ....

    I like the pic

  29. l.... ....

I can't get enough of the piano in this track.

  30. N.... K....

    Oh, ok :)

  31. N.... K....

Never Surrender? Isn't it No Surrender? :p
