Springsteen, Bruce - Blinded By The Light Lyrics

Madman drummers bummers and Indians in the summer with a teenage diplomat
In the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps his way into his hat
With a boulder on my shoulder, feelin' kinda older, I tripped the merry-go-round
With this very unpleasing sneezing and wheezing, the calliope crashed to the ground
Some all-hot half-shot was headin' for the hot spot, snappin' his fingers, clappin' his hands
And some fleshpot mascot was tied into a lover's knot with a whatnot in her hand
And now young Scott with a slingshot finally found a tender spot and throws his lover in the sand
And some bloodshot forget-me-not whispers, "Daddy's within earshot, save the buckshot, turn up the band"

And she was blinded by the light
Cut loose like a deuce, another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
She got down but she never got tight, but she'll make it alright

Some brimstone baritone anti-cyclone rolling stone preacher from the East
He says, "Dethrone the dictaphone, hit it in its funny bone, that's where they expect it least"
And some new-mown chaperone was standin' in the corner all alone, watchin' the young girls dance
And some fresh-sown moonstone was messin' with his frozen zone to remind him of the feeling of romance

Yeah, he was blinded by the light
Cut loose like a deuce, another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
He got down but he never got tight, but he's gonna make it tonight

Some silicone sister with her manager's mister told me I got what it takes
She said, "I'll turn you on, sonny, to something strong if you play that song with the funky break"
And Go-Cart Mozart was checkin' out the weather chart to see if it was safe to go outside
And little Early-Pearly came by in her curly-wurly and asked me if I needed a ride
Oh, some hazard from Harvard was skunked on beer, playin' backyard bombardier
Yes, and Scotland Yard was trying hard, they sent some dude with a calling card, he said, "Do what you like, but don't do it here"
Well, I jumped up, turned around, spit in the air, fell on the ground and asked him which was the way back home
He said, "Take a right at the light, keep goin' straight until night, and then, boy, you're on your own"
And now in Zanzibar, a shootin' star was ridin' in a side car, hummin' a lunar tune
Yes, and the avatar said, "Blow the bar but first remove the cookie jar, we're gonna teach those boys to laugh too soon"
And some kidnapped handicap was complainin' that he caught the clap from some mousetrap he bought last night
Well, I unsnapped his skull cap and between his ears I saw a gap but figured he'd be all right

He was just blinded by the light
Cut loose like a deuce, another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
Mama always told me not to look into the sights of the sun
Oh, but Mama, that's where the fun is
I was blinded
I was blinded
I was blinded

I must have been living under a rock cause this is the only version I knew for over 35 years....just today I listened to Manfred Manns' version... but I still like this one more.

  6. d.... ....

Thank gawd Manfred mann made this a cool sounding song

  7. H.... d....

    the lyrics of my childhood

  8. M.... ....

This original is hard to listen to after growing up Manferd Mann's version. Glad the song did not slip away into obscurity and was re-recorded.

  9. V.... M....

People seem to love or hate springsteen!
    ME? HE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    V.... M....

    No one asked you

    V.... M....

You'll be crucified if you say that in New Jersey.

  10. Z.... I....

I find it such a shame that Bruce “The Boss” wrote this song and sang but it didn’t go high up the charts. Then Manfred Mann earth band cut out some of the words and made it a no. 1 song. Don’t you think this is a silent crime. Well I still love the day Bruce did this song much better than they did it. Yeah. Just my feelings.

  11. R.... v....

Came here after the amazing movie

  12. Y.... Y....

  13. R.... E....

Late-night teevee house bands owe a debt to this song that can never be repaid.

  14. T.... ....

Bruce Springsteen – vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards
Vini "Mad Dog" Lopez – drums, backing vocals
Clarence Clemons – saxophone, backing vocals
    Harold Wheeler – piano

  15. B.... C....

274 people don't have what it takes.

  16. p.... R....

Jonny cash made hurt his song, Manfred made this theirs. Far superior in every way and this isn't a bad song. Just I dont like the tempo or vocals. My opinion of course.

  17. S.... X....

Easy to see where Elvis Costello got his early influences.

    S.... X....

Your nuts! Costello sounds nothing like springsteen!
    How could he?
    Costello is great
    Springsteen sucks!

  18. R.... F....

    Love this alblum

  19. R.... F....

    Love this song.

  20. M.... G....

My favorite Bruce Springsteen song. I remember I used to listen to it as a teenager when the record came out on vinyl in my bedroom looking out at the ocean just north of Asbury Park, NJ.

  21. j.... t....

Wasnt Springsteen a draft dodger? Just wondering...

    j.... t....

He was turned down - not a dodger

  22. A.... M....

This is a song for Alison from East Falls Philadelphia can you here me Alison.

  23. B.... S....

Every time someone I hear or read someone opine that the MM cover did the song justice, I just explode in a fit of laughter. That's like preferring a TV dinner to a steakhouse with a bar. Happy 70, Bossman.

    B.... S....

Bruce himself prefers MM's version. With 2 good reasons. MM made Bruce his first million and it's a far better version, much more going on musically.

  24. E.... C....

    shit! MMEB rules!!!

  25. t.... .....

I heard this song was written because the record company complained they didnt think the album had a potential hit. So Springsteen went off and wrote this.

    t.... .....

That is correct. I'm reading his autobiography at the moment and I just read that part 20 mins ago.

  26. Q.... L....

    What does it mean?

  27. u.... ....

    Thank go for Manfred Mann

  28. F.... L....

dude, i didn't even knew the MM version was a cover of a bruce springsteen song!

  32. D.... S....

Be SURE to see the movie Blinded by the light. In the theater the sound and visuals add much to the great story, songs and more.

    D.... S....

How about no?? Why should anyone see a movie associating rock n' roll and western culture with a pajeet trying to normalize them as if they are just the same as us in our countries? Sounds fucking retarded. Fuck off, boomer.

  37. T.... 1....

This is not on any level like mm version

  38. M.... ....

    Pretty good cover xd

  39. H.... K....

I like both versions but this obviously has the depth.Like the difference between Bowie's All The Young Dudes and Mott's All The Young Dudes. This version has got some groovy drumming too.

  40. w.... ....

Man i didn't know that this was the original. Interesting!

  41. R.... L....

I believe MMann's version takes it by a nose.

  42. d.... h....

Its simple, MM version is much more musical, dynamic and memorable.

    d.... h....

@dave himlin.I totally agree with you mate.Just co's Springsteen's "the Boss" or whatever, doesn't mean some people should feel the need to be dishonest

    d.... h....

@Karl hill To me, springsteens version reminds me of something Bob Dylan woulda done,. Lyrically strong, but musically boring and forgetable. Manfred Mann changed that.

  43. j.... h....

Saturday Night sounding ass. I likey

  44. X.... X....

I love Bruce...but his version sucks..

  45. R.... P....

Love Bruce. Thunder Road has been my favorite song for forever. For whatever reason. Never was able to get into this one. It's not a perfect world I guess...

    R.... P....

Don't give up on us one you keep listen to it to 11 and you'll figure it out sooner or later!

  46. D.... H....

You don't hear "who am I to ask you to lick my sores" in the Manfred Mann version. I heard MM's version first and dug it - still do. But I like this raw original version the best.

    D.... H....

Ha you must be tone deaf, clearly the boss was when he recorded the original.

    D.... H....

@Jack Spirko - You misunderstand. I'm referring to the original on Greetings from Asbury Park. Manfred Mann version doesn't use the line "Who am I to ask you to lick my sores". Also, I'm posting on the wrong thread. That's from "For You" on the same album. Not "Blinded by the Light". My bad...

    D.... H....

@David Harrison no worries I was just razzing you anyway.

  47. m.... ....

I just now learned that this is the original version. W hen we went to see "yesterday," I thought I saw a trailor about a movie about a guy who finds out he's the only one that remembers Bruce. So I had to do very little research find the name of the movie. When you hear a song and you like it, you usually don't like another version and I do like M&m's version better.

    m.... ....

Actually, the protagonist of "Yesterday" is the only one who remembers The Beatles.

  48. J.... H....

Take a right at the light, go straight until night; and then boys you are on your own. huh. Someone else got kicked out Ocean City.

  49. c.... ....

shits all over Manfred Mann imo

    c.... ....

the only thing that is shitting is your boyfriend shitting all over your face.

  51. L.... M....

the first 5 seconds sound like grandma got ran over by a reindeer

  52. M.... ....

Comparing this song to Manfred Mann's Version is like Comparing "Sound Of Silence" Disturbed Version to Simon & Garfunkel. They are both different but they are both great!!!

  53. D.... M....

I heard the Manfred Mann version before I heard the Springsteen version. While I like both, the Springsteen version sounds like a party is going on, and puts me in a better mood. So my vote is for Bruce's version.

  54. A.... ....

Didn't He write this for Man FredMan ( wasn't that the name of the group at the time?)and the Rare Earth Band? Perhaps I am wrong but I seem to remember that was the way it was when I grew up in the 60's and 70's.

  55. J.... C....

"Madman drummers bummers" - Vinnie "Mad Dog" Lopez, the original drummer of the E Street Band.

"Indians in the summer" - Springsteen's little league baseball team as a kid.

"In the dumps with the mumps" - being sick with the mumps.

"Boulder on my shoulder" - a "chip" on his shoulder.

"Some all hot, half-shot, heading for a hot spot, snapping fingers clapping his hands" - Being a "know it all kid growing up, who doesn't really know anything."

"Silicone Sister" - Springsteen has acknowledged that this is arguably the first mention of Breast implants in popular music - a dancer at one of the local strip joints in Asbury Park.

He wrote this song in his bedroom, primarily using a rhyming dictionary. Or as Springsteen put it, "the rhyming dictionary was on fire."

  56. M.... F....

I came here because the new movie brought me here. What an inspiration.

  57. S.... ....

This version has really grown on me over the past few months...

  58. r.... c....

Gran tema de los inicios del "Jefe"

  59. l.... ....

Not a big fan of the Boss, but that was great. Manfred Man was lazy.

  60. M.... G....

I like the cover better, but Springsteen is one of the great all time composer & lyricist.

  61. m.... a....

Manfreds is so much better youd have to say that it wasnt bruces song anymore after manfred put the icing on the cake:)

  62. R.... A....

This version is very Van Morrisony. I like both versions.

  63. A.... w....

Man Fred version gave the song more energy with a Rockstar feel. I like this version but Manfred version made the song. Ask Bruce yourself

  64. M.... W....

Props for writing the song. It’s not the best version of it. But Springsteen created the lyrics and deserves credit. Also, credit to Counting Crows for taking Springsteen’s sound.

  65. A.... T....

I love Springsteen, but holy shit, MM did it way better.

  66. A.... ....

bruce trying to be bob dylan

    both cute tunes

  71. S.... M....

Eagles of death metal cover this. Not bad

  74. K.... T....

epic album of the young bruce springsteen. the world was way younger in '73 than it is now.

    K.... T....

So true. Way before UFO Jesus...

    K.... T....

His first 3 albums were great, but this first one was pure genius. Sorry to say, he went to the well too many times. By "the river", he was beating a dead horse. "Lost in the Flood" (on this album) has my fav comb of lyrics and instrumentality..."and that blaze & noise, boy, he's gunning that bitch..." makes my crotch warm. Check it out (the song, not my crotch).

  75. B.... M....

    216 people tripped the merri-go-roumd

  76. B.... R....

It's interesting how people often don't know the origin of a song like Manfred Mann's #1 hit, Blinded by the Light - and this is it! Hard to believe it's the same song, because it basically isn't. Lyrics somewhat the same, some homage to the original in the arrangement by Mann, but really a whole different song in many ways as well. Credit to Springsteen for his writing, but I can see why the cover went to #1.

  77. I.... l....

The remake sounds so much better

  78. J.... P....

I cry everytime I hear this lol best version. Who ever says different,

    Were blinded by the light.

    J.... P....

I also cry everytime I hear it, because it's terrible!!

    J.... P....

    @Richard Hopley
    You were blinded!!!
    (He was blinded!!!)
You got down but you never got tight
    But you'll make it...

    Tonight.

  79. N.... E....

So MMEB version isnt just a cover

  80. T.... S....

    I WAS BLINED

  81. S.... R....

So Manfred man wrote the music but they use springsteen lyrics ? Or what ?

    S.... R....

Bruce wrote the song, Manfred covered it, but transformed it, but it's still Bruce song.

  82. U.... L....

How about that!! Yet another song that make me hate Springsteen even more. Sucks ass

  83. m.... n....

This is as good as Eminem!

  84. M.... n....

"Girls just wanna have fun" is another song that the cover was way more popular than the original. Just like this song, the cover was released just a few years after the original. The original was by Robert Hazard.

  85. J.... F....

Springsteen butchers this song! Tthe original version by Manfred mann rocks!

    J.... F....

    Hahahahaha

This is the original. Bruce wrote it and put it on his debut album. Manfred Mann covered it. MM's version is obviously better tho.

  86. a.... ....

Manfred Mann? haha. No one can touch Bruce. Esp. pre Boss era. The genius is in the writing, not the covering!

    a.... ....

    Sorry, don't like Sprinklstein.

  87. T.... E....

Can’t believe people like this version better than Manfred Mann’s version lmao

    T.... E....

    It's better and isn't over-produced, that's why

  88. J.... B....

Apples and oranges. I like both apples and oranges. Both are different. Yet both appeal to me and make me feel full.

  89. A.... ....

Whatever you prefer: no cover exists without the original ;)

  90. V.... M....

la version de manfred destrono a springsteem

  91. P.... H....

Manfred Mann's remake of this song was the most improved cover of a song in the history of recorded music. That version of this song was EPIC!!

    P.... H....

This is a prime example of a not so well known mediocre song, turned into a big hit by the band(Manfred Man) that covered it! Most people have no idea that springsteen even wrote or recorded it! The cover is much better in every aspect!

  92. S.... M....

lol nobody gives a sh*t about this version. I didn't even know it was a Springsteen song and no matter how many times I listen to it, I always believe MM's version is far, FAR superior! (Nebraska and Born To Run were both great though)

  93. N.... S....

Manfred Mann sucks, singing this song or any, they just don't do it for me.

    N.... S....

they don't do it for you because you are a complete fucking idiot.

  94. C.... P....

Don’t like: if you accept any song

Reply: if you want to have a pathetic comment war about which is better.

  95. R.... A....

Much discussion here about the better version of the song. Manfred's of Bruce's. Of course it is all subjective. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcWVL4B-4pI . Here is a live version by Manfred. They smoked this song and made it better. It is more dynamic in that it reaches different crescendos several times. Bruce's version is in the same dynamic range most of the time. In short Mannfred's has more movement. And the harmonies are more complex and round like. The thought here is like Joe Cocker and the Beatles" I get by with a little help from my friends. After McCartney and Lennon saw Cocker's live version at Woodstock they said "It is his song now". Now and then someone takes a really good song and makes it better. Like Hendrix with All Along the Watchtower. Much more dynamic than dylan's which is still great. My two pennies worth which is worth that much. Cheers. Also look at what Stevie Ray Vaughn did to Voodo Chile by Hendrix. Is it better than Jimi's? some say yes and other say no. But Stevie absolutely smoked that song. There is a ton of passion that Mann brought to this song. As well a wonderful compositional artistry

    R.... A....

here is a copy of Bruce's live version.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgHkkcoyuOY . It is musically range bound in terms of dynamics and harmonies. Gotta go with Manfred having the better version.

  96. V.... A....

thus song captures the feelmg of the free 70s be it this ir manfred mans . yes thus us more traditional and i like what manfred nan did to it its like a total re write of a legendary song .

  97. C.... L....

    Ummmmm....Quit it Bruce! 🙌🏼

  98. e.... ....

    He wrote this

  99. D.... B....

What the fuck, these are the same lyrics? I can't get jiggy with this shit!

  100. M.... ....

Bruce's version sounds like Adam Duritz and Counting Crows. Like it.

    M.... ....

You mean the counting crowes and Adam duritz sound like this
