Springfield, Rick - April 24, 1981 Lyrics

I know all your life you wondered
About that step we all take alone
How far does the spirit travel on the journey
You must surely be near heaven
And it thrills me to the bone
To know Daddy knows the great unknown...

My mom died May 17, 2019. First holidays without her. Many years ago, when we were all young (and alive), and I had no knowledge of grief yet, those two RS songs killed me back then even thinking about such a day as 05/17/19 being possible. Now I know the pain that RS and everyone who has lost a parent feels. I lost my best friend of 49 years. I know she is happy, with her parents, and the dogs, and Jesus in heaven, but... sometimes I am thrilled for her and gutted for myself at the same time. Other times I howl. Or sit in stunned silence. Or laugh.

Such a lovely tribute to his father. My mom has been gone three years now, so this song hits close to my heart. And it's so true, missing them never gets easier with time.

  6. S.... ....

God! The heartbreak on his face just kills me. I lost my Mom 13 years ago and that wound still feels as fresh as the day I got the news. Bless all of you that has had to say goodbye to a parent.

One of the most beautiful songs ever written. But it never gets easier for Rick he cries every time I have seen him perform this song.

Hey Homie. Research done. The first part of this song is actually called April 24, 1981. The day his father died. This is a medley of the two songs. This is from his live "Stripped Down" cd from 2015. The notes are correct, but thanks for playing!

My dad died April 22, 2003, That was the worst day of my life! My dad and I were so close. Everything that Rick sings in the song My Father's chair, especially the line, "why do they leave the weakest sprit and take the strong" and the line about people telling him that the pain will ease, that is such a lie. It's 14 years for us and it still hurts as much as it did the day he died.

Me too. My life changed when my Dad passed. He was everything....the perfect Dad. When we were kids, NASA was flying to the moon. While we were sleeping, he build a lunar capsule in our backyard out of a jungle gym. It was amazing. It looked just like the lunar capsule and he used our toys to build the cockpit inside. It didn't last long because it was made out of spray painted cardboard over the jungle gym, but for a few days, we had the best present ever.

Damn this song is so fine!!! Love to you Rick!!!

My dad died on my birthday April 24 2014. Worst day of my life

    K.... L....

Kathy Lester Think about your dad when he was still around and in the prime of his life with you....keep that way and he'll NEVER die. As long as you remember your father, he'll be always with you. I'm pretty sure he'll pick you up when your time comes....Stay Strong. 😊

its been a very emotion weekend, and then I realize its April 24th so I go and look this song up. I used to sing it to myself after my own dad passed away, and now of course I`m crying my eyes out...amazing...the power of music...
