Springfield, Dusty - Yesterday When I Was Young Lyrics

[Spoken:]
Somehow, it seems the love I knew was always the most destructive kind

Yesterday when I was young
The taste of life was sweet
As rain upon my tongue
I teased at life as if it were a foolish game
The way the evening breeze
May tease the candle flame

The thousand dreams I dreamed
The splendid things I planned
I always built to last on weak and shifting sand
I lived by night and shunned the naked light of day
And only now I see how the time ran away

Yesterday when I was young
So many lovely songs were waiting to be sung
So many wild pleasures lay in store for me
And so much pain my eyes refused to see
I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out
I never stopped to think what life was all about
And every conversation that I can now recall
Concerned itself with me and nothing else at all

The game of love I played with arrogance and pride
And every flame I lit too quickly, quickly died
The friends I made all somehow seemed to slip away
And only now I'm left alone to end the play, yeah

Oh, yesterday when I was young
So many, many songs were waiting to be sung
So many wild pleasures lay in store for me
And so much pain my eyes refused to see
There are so many songs in me that won't be sung
I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue
The time has come for me to pay for yesterday
When I was young

Love the song. It'll always be Roy Clark's song, but her arrangement is golden.

An amazing rendition of this song, by a great singer!!

Something to think about. If you or someone close to you has experienced a significant loss and has been unable to incorporate their grief for the loss, during the summer I happened upon the concept of complicated grief. As I read the symptoms and risk factors I saw myself. Columbia Univesity has a proven program. Not a cure all but sometimes you need a professional to help work through things.

  13. s.... ....

You all are here yapping about life meaning, time passing by and so on...
But the real question is WHO IS HERE LISTENING IN 2020?!?!?!?!?!

  14. D.... F....

I don't like this song but Dusty transforms as only she can.

  15. R.... ....

I'm 30+ old, I grew up on hip hop and modern pop music, the first time I heard and saw Dusty six months ago. And I will say this: this is a completely unique combination of voice, charm and female aesthetics. This is just awesome. After that, I discovered a whole layer of great artists of the 50s-60s, but still Dusty remains the best.

  16. R.... H....

Forget the plastic stars from x factor and the like, This lady was a real star, I'm 63, but I remember as a young boy back in the 60's, this lady was stuck to the wall in our house, Not sure if My mother approved, But I know my dad did.and i still do,

  17. B.... L....

Barney Buster - Only those that have lost their helpmates and soul mates can understand But pls look at it differently as what a blessing you had for all those years that so many never get at all or far less than you.
Remember the wonderful years they are never enough this side of Heaven.

  18. a.... ....

This is the only version that I really connect with... it takes me to a place I don't really want to be and yet I can't stop listening.

  35. R.... A....

I have never heard that song sung by a woman, the only one was a man by the name of Jock Brell. Now I must say it's just as beautiful. They both embrace that nice song. GREAT!

Power voice without distortion, soft when needed, feminine to the extent of desire , when will we have another grand lady that will make us enjoy music again ,,

  38. M.... C....

Charles Aznavour wrote “Yesterday, When I Was Young” with Georges Garvarentz back in 1964. Its original French title was “Hier Encore”, which means “Yesterday Again” in English.

  39. A.... R....

00:17 what a lovely voice … yesteryears songs are incomparable and beyond compare nowadays … 🥰🥰🥰

  40. J.... S....

Que voz linda ,ficara na net por muitos anos .

  42. M.... D....

Must be from when she recorded in Memphis.

  43. d.... ....

I think everybody over the age of 30 can relate to this song. Time is moving extremely fast and there's nothing we can do about it. You try your hardest to live out your dreams, but age and responsibility sets in and all you're left with is the old ambitions you had when you were young. This song is such a sad truth.

  44. M.... M....

    For all our days pass away under your wrath;
we bring our years to an end like a sigh.
The years of our life are seventy,
    or even by reason of strength eighty;
    yet their span is but toil and trouble;
they are soon gone, and we fly away. (Psalm 90:9-10)

Dusty had such a sexy voice. This one seemed to be written just for her and she did it best.

If you are alive to read this, then it is not too late. But the time IS GETTING CLOSE, And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

    Невероятно, обворожительно звучит!

  59. N.... B....

A beautiful tribute to Charles Aznavour’s Hier Encore

  60. A.... ....

She had this huge voice that could deliver mighty, meaty sound but it always contained this quality of aching vulnerability at the same time. There is something to that that just grabs you and holds you. That's why she will never be forgotten.

    A.... ....

What a great description of her voice. The emotion, tenderness, and sweet, honey quality of her voice will never be duplicated by anyone. Another singer from Dusty's time said that all the female vocalists wanted to sound like her, but it was impossible.

  61. R.... H....

It is normal to want another adventure. This universe is a simulated reality built in what to us here is the future. An advanced computer complex powered by a Dyson sphere. Stroll through the Gateless Gateway to endless worlds. Most prefer new sacred journeys, but some will want a redo. The complex started as an advanced ancestral education virtual reality. How many worlds have you already explored? #basereality

Dusty had both a versatile & beautiful voice unfairly under rated by many. Burt Bacharach described her as one of the finest voices he heard & she sang some of the best cover versions of some of his songs. She had the ability to change her style to a wide range of music from pop to jazz & blues. She was inspired by some coloured singers & their music & one of her backing singers was coloured (Madelaine Bell who also had a great voice!). I believe that the melancholy in her voice, in some songs, really did come from her own feelings of loneliness. RIP to one of the UK's finest female singers lost far too young.

  74. G.... S....

I lived for POWER, lust, manipulation, lying, ephemeral relationships----and now, INDEED, I MUST PAY with my solitude, my lack of loved ones, the dead, the abandoned ones..........It is a SEARING self-indictment, but even then some sociopaths out there will not recognize all the debris they left behind----all the broken lives and hearts---that will not be me....I shall recognize my faults even if it KILLS ME!!! I must PAY FOR THEM now that I approach old age!!......

Dusty Springfield and Charles Aznavour, only these two great singers have ever done justice to songwriter Aznavour’s poignant introspective ballad. Dusty's is surely the best female performance ever recorded...timeless!
