Springfield, Dusty - What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life? Lyrics

What are you doing the rest of your life?
North and south and east and west of your life
I have only one request of your life
That you spend it all with me

All the seasons and the times of your days
All the nickels and the dimes of your days
Let the reasons and the rhymes of your days
All begin and end with me

I want to see your face
In every kind of light
In fields of dawn
And forests of the night

And when you stand before the candles on the cake
Oh, let me be the one to hear the silent wish you make

Those tomorrow's waiting deep in your eyes
And the world of love you keep in your eyes
I'll awaken what's asleep in your eyes
It may take a kiss or two

Through all of my life
Summer, winter, spring and fall of my life
All I ever will recall of my life
Is all of my life with you, ooh, ooh

Springfield, Dusty What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life? Comments

Beautiful song, has been running through my mind. I remember the Jack Jones version best but Dusty’s version is lovely. She was a terrific singer, all class, not like the trashy female singers today who can’t really sing so they just wiggle their bums.

  2. E.... J....

This is for Marina, of Zurich, Switzerland

  3. F.... T....

Is ok...but Barbara Straisand has A much better version.!!!!!!!

Springfield and her conductor/producer should be indicted for plagiarism: the same arrangement as the Streisand version, arranged and conducted by Peter Matz, and the same vocal charting as the Streisand version. The power that be of the recording company, under which Springfield was contracted at the time this recording was made, had the good sense to shelve it for twenty four yrs before an official release. Were this recording released as originally planned it would have done the recording company and, particularly, Springfield a lot of damage.

    m.... ....

Dusty recorded her version 4 years before Streisand so if there's any plagiarism going on then that lies at Streisand's and her producer's door. Own goal, you fucking moron.

    m.... ....

@John David Well said, obviously that comment comes from a Barbra fan who finally realised who the best really is.

  16. S.... T....

This was my 1st dance for my husband and I on our wedding day. I first heard it on Zales commerical and fell in love with the way it made me feel and the lyrics. Her voice is so beautiful...
We used to dance to this every anniversary. . .

    S.... T....

Was this the commercial, Ms SC Thomas-Joe? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVucbYZvLV0

    S.... T....

I wanted this sung at our wedding, but the church wouldn't allow it or "Happy" by Johnny Mathis.

  17. D.... T....

    Absolutely beautiful.

  18. W.... T....

This is why the human voice is called the most expressive musical instrument...👍

  19. J.... V....

    sadly sadly missed

  20. C.... ....

    The song.
    The singer.
    Touches my my heart.

  21. C.... C....

    She sings, I cry.

  22. E.... J....

That was beautiful sung by Dusty Springfield, from the land of Bertrand Russell UK

  23. J.... C....

I wish I could add to the comments but I can't. Suffice it to say she was the best.

  24. D.... B....

    absolutely an all-time favorite of mine! ! ! ! !

  25. D.... ....

    Soooo Gorgeous....beautiful song! ❤❤🎵🎶♩🎤

  26. D.... T....

A slower version and more restrained version than Barbra's and the more touching and magical methinks. A beautiful voice. This made my night.

    D.... T....

I love how slow it is.

  27. P.... H....

    So delicately beautiful.

  28. L.... C....

    Awesome version...

  29. M.... D....

anyone know of any other classic jazz songs sung by Dusty like this? I just love her voice singing jazz. Like an even smoother Peggy Lee.

  30. L.... R....

Found out this song was recorded for the "See all Her Faces" Lp in 1970 but was cut.  It wasn't issued until 1994 in UK and 1999 in US.  Can you believe it?  One of her best performances was in the record company's library (unmixed) all those years!  Thank God they found it and had enough sense to release it after 20 years as a bonus track.

    L.... R....

Lorne, I agree with you 100%.  Well, it could have been that Dusty cut the song out herself.  Never wanted to be labeled a Standards Lounge Singer.  Always wanted to keep up with what was going on at the current time and stay relevant.  She did lament after recording "Reputation" LP that maybe she should be recording Standards for the next LP.  But decided instead to do "A Very Very Fine Love" which wasn't standards.   Of course, as someone stated, she made a mediocre song sound great but made a great song sound spectacular.  Check out her singing 'Since I Fell For You" if you haven't heard that.  One of my favorites, never recorded, only 2 live versions.

    L.... R....

"Since I Fell For You" is also gorgeous. Thanks for the great suggestion. Funny, in the video I watched, Dusty smiles her way through the performance, and I find it an incongruous match with the sad edge in her voice. Goes back to that emotional reaction I felt in "What are You Doing...". Whatever's going on inside her that generates such vocal texture doesn't lend itself to a ready-for-my-closeup smile. Maybe that gels with your comment about her resistance to being a 'lounge-singer' versus how she envisioned herself. Food for thought. Now I feel duty-bound to toss a musical suggestion your way...

    L.... R....

It could be that she was smiling as she was in heaven listening and feeding off the orchestra. There are two live versions. Think she is more serious in the bluesy version (white dress with orange trim). But is equally in love with the backing band. You know, she had to do so much lip syncing I'm sure when she had the opportunity to be backed by a wonderful orchestra or band and things were sounding fantastic, that had to make her feel terrific and inspired. She had incredible ears and if anybody was out of tune or she had to sing with a band playing a bad arrangement (see one version of 'Son of a Preacher Man' on a talk show. She takes her watch off and throws it. Ha!), she was distracted, bummed out, and couldn't wait for it to be over. Understandably so. Didn't happen very often, thankfully.

    L.... R....

It was cut?! Why would they cut this song, don't they have ears...

    L.... R....

And someone in 2006 used the song for the Journey Diamond Collection commercial (Dandelion). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVucbYZvLV0

  31. L.... R....

Dusty is Spellbinding on this.  I've never heard it before.  What LP is it on?  Stops you in your tracks.  One of her greatest vocals.

    L.... R....

i agree with Lori, this rendition is OVER THE TOP, only Dusty, knew what to stress and what not to stress with her magical voice..this is a "blueprint" song for any singer who "thinks' they can perform this song,

  32. a.... s....

    Muito lindo!

  33. N.... J....

Dusty the queen of soul at least in her fans' eyes! Forever Dusty!

  34. A.... C....

The best...just the best there is!

  35. B.... V....

Deep, smokey and throaty, the ultimate song stylist. Rest in peace, dear girl.

  36. N.... J....

Love Dusty! Her voice is a wonderful piece of art -- so sultry, sexy and so romantic mmm she is a legend in my eyes!

  37. H.... ....

She sounds better and better as the years go by…

  38. A.... R....

I am in love with this woman

    A.... R....

    she is mine

    A.... R....

    Me too!! xxx

  39. D.... K....

Her voice is golden silk wrapped in warm honey.

  40. T.... D....

You always transport me in another dimension with your voice Dusty.

    T.... D....

    Love me some Dusty....

    T.... D....

Indeed.  What this world needs is this kind of escape.

  41. P.... L....

I loved that song since 30 years ago.....and I try to play it on piano sometimes. Well trying to do my best...

  42. p.... ....

    No words except - magnificent.

  43. V.... ....

Probably the definitive version, lovely song, tricky to sing, I've been trying to re learn the lyrics,

  44. K.... F....

I love the exquisite orchestration in the first part of this.  I think maybe it gets too big at the end.  On the other hand, it allows Dusty to go full force.  Magnificent vocal interpretation.

    K.... F....

I love her. The best pop singer ever.

  45. L.... ....

She paints a masterpiece with her voice.
I wish the instrumentation was not so prominent in the mix from the midway on to the end.

  46. J.... R....

Version magique, définitive, intemporelle. Chaque nouvelle écoute est un ravissement. La magnifique partition de Michel Legrand est ici sublimée. Qu'en pense le compositeur lui-même ?

  47. g.... ....

The best version of this awesome song. :)

    g.... ....

I have listened to 20 versions, some including LeGrand himself. This is easily the best to me. Of all people, Rosemary Clooney gets second place - it ain't bad.

    g.... ....

    BuggaBoo Bedtime Stories agree

    g.... ....

    A tie with Sinatra's.

    g.... ....

I agree, and one other thing. Us, J Griffins need to hang together.

  48. S.... K....

Amen!! For some reason mediocrity is more lauded in pop culture. A few exceptions occur, Barbra is obviously wonderful, but it is just so sad to me how few people have even heard of Dusty. She was marvelous. And this song is just breath-taking!!

  49. B.... ....

right after I saw that jewelry commercial long time ago, I had to have this version!

  50. G.... ....

Musik skabt for hendes stemme! Music created for her voice!

  51. m.... ....

I do agree with MrDoug41, this must be the best version of this beautiful song.

  52. v.... m....

    Love Dusty!

  53. J.... H....

I am so lucky to have this rendition of this epic song. This cannot be topped by anyone or any combination of performers and orchestrations. I am 47 years married to the same women who has a quality of voice that delight's me to this day on the phone or in person at the nursing home. Some voices actually are melodic by nature. It is a gift.

    J.... H....

Sublimely expressive. All with incredible intonation!

  54. M.... H....

    Epic....

  55. K.... ....

one of the best versions of this ...

  56. M.... B....

If you dont like this version go away and listen to whatever version you like ..childish

  57. C.... G....

So sad what passes for talent today. We have 'minor talents' from the Olden Days who would be giants by today's standards. Is it better to have lived Once Upon a Time?

  58. E.... K....

    Simply amazing!

  59. S.... D....

gorgeous rendition!! i always liked dusty. i'm sure most people only heard her HIT records.

  60. O.... ....

5 tone deaf fools voted thumbs down...Dusty is MAGNIFICENT and this is THEE definitive version of a classic song.

  61. t.... ....

Great song, a great voice, now gone. Thank you!

  62. P.... J....

    So very well done

  63. l.... ....

Flawlessly done. Love this version the best.

  64. c.... ....

The GOLD STANDARD for this song. Everyone else tries to do it like this, but they can't be Dusty.

  65. J.... M....

And i say Shirley Bassey does the best version of this. And maybe people will understand someday that all these 3 singers are in a class of their own and that music and its reception depend on taste.

  66. M.... O....

    magic voice

  67. D.... D....

I suppose one could say the Streisand version is better, if you like people who sing through their noses.

  68. J.... R....

In fact, Barbs would've probably never done this song if Dusty had not done it first.

    J.... R....

Streisand's version was recorded, and released as a single in 1969.

  69. R.... ....

This is simply tremendous. Why do douche-bags always have to make it an issue of who is better than another? This is a tremendous rendition, that someone like Babs would totally appreciate. Each performer is great in her own way. Chill out and enjoy greatness!

  70. D.... N....

My mother just loved this song, and she loved Dusty Springfield too. What beautiful memories?

  71. G.... M....

Dusty owns it! Great material + Amazing artist = this song!

  72. Z.... ....

@heffleyj1 Only those whose marriage is going to last forever would be advised to have this as their wedding song. I thought ours would; now alone by her surprise choice, I can't listen to it without crying at the joy and hopes of that special day 30 years ago and the shattered dream which haunts me to this day...

  73. A.... A....

This arrangement is an imitataion ......Barbra Streisand...of course !!

  74. g.... v....

@pcprupert Complete agreement with you...Dusty's is the best rendition of the song.

  75. g.... v....

    @billyboylb Pluh-eeze!!!

  76. P.... P....

@billyboylb success has nothing to do with how well someone sings a song...

  77. b.... ....

@pcprupert I'd have to disagree on that. Barbra has been way more successful in all media than Dusty ever was.

    b.... ....

    billyboylb so.

  78. P.... P....

@billyboylb ..........not even close... although, tastes do vary... Barbara's a minor league hack compared this...

  79. b.... ....

Great, but this one is really owned by Streisand.

  80. G.... M....

Amazing version....hands down the best!!! Some artists rush this song... Dusty savors it --

  81. D.... L....

@motoven That's so weird....that's exactly what happened to me as well. never heard of this song before that ad. Magical song. Hands down Dusty has the best version, by a mile!

  82. R.... ....

Her voice goes from fragile and helpless to steely- strong and confident in this masterpiece.

  83. M.... ....

She does the best version of this song. It's perfect.

  84. M.... G....

Dusty's voice is one of greatest God's gifts to all of us....

  85. m.... ....

@teamrookie When DeBeers put the first min. of this song on that commercial, I fell outta my seat in my living room. I had to know where that came from. It was love at first sound.

  86. m.... ....

@chocomama16 Those chills are because singing that song was her God-given gift to share with the world. When you find your purpose(s) in life, that's what happens.

  87. L.... N....

Love Diana Ross but she couldn't touch this performance from Dusty nor any other artist maybe Peggy Lee...? Dusty loved and admired her and her songs...

  88. h.... ....

Oh, SING THAT SONG! Dusty Springfield & there's all the rest!!
