Split Enz - Under The Wheel Lyrics
They said you were bright
Had stars in your eyes
They said you were bright
Had all the ideas in your head
For all those years
Under the wheel
For all those tears
But now they all stand back and shout
Go on you creep, go on get out
Oh my god what are they on about
And I think I'll get on back home to my mother
Yes I think I'll get on back home to my mother
It doesn't seem real
The way things turned out
It doesn't seem real
Now your heads full of doubt
But now they all jump back in fear
As if I really care
They just stand and stare
It's not fair...
It's not fair.
It's not fair!!...
Cold and silent you lie in the dark waters of the stream
Shame and suffering have passed
But death, glorious death is just another bed to sleep
Yes death, glorious death
Is just another appointment to keep

Split Enz Under The Wheel Comments
I always thought he says...
Oh my god, what an animal
Scream at 4:34........and when the echo comes back at 4:39. I will not easily forget.
I just got lost in a thought about that echo!! How the fuck did they do it? I've always been curious about panning and stereo stuff in music.
Everything about this is epic. But the orgasm point is at 6.41, when the bass changes and the paranoid darkness turns into sunshine, and all of a sudden it becomes happy. The guitar solo is fucking beautiful, and the keyboards blend gorgeously. I've never heard a band blend so beautifully as Early Enz. Mental Notes and Second Thoughts are both works of pure Art.
The watery fade out is also magical.
You have good taste Sir! Bought Mental Notes in 76,It has remained with me ever since X SUBLIME TITUS.
Orgasm point...well put...Im gonna use that!! (:
Yeah its fuckin great eh...if youre in the right head space....nourishing and weirdly uplifting..
beyond the curve
This is prog rock at its best and I wish I could find more like it knocking about under the wheel is the best Split Enz song and it's great that Phil sung on it bc it would have lost its charm if Tim had sung it
if i am wanting to listen to a near 8 minute musical landscape of such variety and emotion then this is it, amazing
What progrock was supposed to be about. The whole album is amazing. Split Enz did a Blackfeather though. Nobody was quite ready for it...much like BF's At The Mountains Of Madness... oh well...they both had a lucrative career doing very generic pop.
Awesome
damn cool!!! but in my copy of mental notes bought in italy in 1976 this track ther's not!!!!!!! and also other tracks of the cd edition that i have...different tracks in the 70's lp and in the cd..??????
I would assume that you have the Canadian Version of mental notes. AKA the nine tracks from Second Thoughts with the additional tenth track being put on the end to sell the album as mental notes. Does your copy have The Woman Who Loves You, Lovey Dovey and Matinee Idyll on it? If so then it's the Canadian version, which is still good BTW
'Death's just another appointment to keep'... bloody hell
The real split enz
This brings back memories. Loved it then. I still love it now.
What on earth was inside Phil Judd's head ? Brilliant.. love the time changes, dynamics, the variations on a theme, the deranged vocals. It all works.
That's the genius of Phil Judd
My all time favorite Split Enz song AND my favorite version!!
Come on! It's an amazing performance by anyone's standards.
like so many artists, They write their best stuff when they are up and coming struggling artists...Very creative , haunting , ethereal lyrics.....Mental Notes and Disrythmia was Splits Enz at their best...After that is was the beginning of the Endz for me
I still think Second was great too and play it a lot. Love both versions of the songs they revisited.
correct
an amazing work of art. how did they write such mature stuff when they were so young? loving it.
it was sam hunt.. and he fucking desecrated it... eddie rayner should be shot for not getting Phil not to sing on it..
I wonder if there is a translation of this for sane people?
this song is freaky man! brilliant ENZ. not too keen on the vocals, but if Tim did this it would lose 90% of it's epicness. well done Juddsy.
i studied for all my school exams to this album.....still superb decades later.
I've been a fan of Split Enz for decades, but it's taken me a long time to come around to properly listening to the Phil Judd era properly, which is just wrong, because I've been a progressive rock fan for at least as long as I have been an Enz fan. This song is an absolute masterpiece, and the audio on this rip is flawless. Thanks for sharing.
And Phil, if you're really out there somewhere, you're something special, man. Take care of yourself.
Lee McIlmoyle hes out there! Still making music. Love your comment ... You can find him easily on facebook.. He actually friend requested me... I was shocked lol
one of my favourite songs ever.
makes bohemian rhapsody seem to be beating about the bush
@governorgilf Then you should take a closer look to the history of prog. In the late 70's alot of great progbands were makin kind of new-wave music, more modern and streamlined(dare I say "straight ahead"), but still pretty good most of the time. Listen to the last album of Gentle Giant for example, some say that's new wave. For me it's just updated prog, and so are the later Enz albums.
first time i heared this was in the dark thru head phones. it gets right into your head and is quite hauntig but brilliant
Masterpiece
I prefer the ENZSO version, with Bud Tingwell...but this is pretty cool.
I love Phil's voice, it's unique, innit?! :)
Governorgilf is exactly correct. Very Prog and dead on at this point. It's like Family King crimson and early Genesis had a supergroup. The Enzers emphatically denied their Prog past but the proof is in the Prog. The said they were fans of The Move only. The strong connection is Manzanera's producer credit on 2nd album.
