This still affects me now exactly as it did nearly 40 years ago when I was a moody disenfranchised 16 year old girl who hated the world and everyone in it.

A glorious, grandiose, multi-layered genius of a song; tempered by the haunting sweetness of Tim Finn's voice. Split Enz have to be one of the most underrated bands ever, nearly every song they wrote and performed was superb.

It's so weird, his voice doesn't match his face. The way he looks, you'd think he'd have a deeper voice.

There is no best bit in this song because the whole song is the best bit.

I never like guys who tried to stand out for their mascara and blow-dried hair. Nevertheless, this is an incomparably great song.

I remember listening to it on the radio, looking up from my math homework, all of sixteen years old, back in 1980. The song has a lot of guts, both musically and vocally. Composed and sung by some young bloke, down the other end of Planet Earth.

At the time, I was really more into Neil Young's 'Rust Never Sleeps' and J.J. Cale's "Five". Still, this Finn song came shining through.

Omg, this video is creative majestic genius!! To think that back in 1980 I was only 4 yrs old when I heard this alot on the local radio station...I never understood it obviously but this track resonated with me though and to think after some 31 years (now 41) I finally get to see the songs video clip?! Truly an epic masterpiece, so many early 80's I remember as a kid that I now fully enjoy as an adult....Never get music like this again.

Wondering where the home is where this was filmed, and the local hall. Those huge paper lanterns are rather crass, you could never get the real deal, still someone knew the ambiance they were trying to create and did their best.

For mine, this is one of the most profound lines ever written in a song. As a long time sufferer of depression, and at the age Paul Hester was when he took his own life, this line cuts very close to home for me.

Tim Finn the true heart of Split Enz. His brother Neil very influential too. Tim, even in my humble opinion produced more interesting and off beat music than his brother. But of course, unfortunately Tim ended up having a more understated image than Neil, due to the more mainstream commercial success of Crowded House.

The artistic dynamic Crombie gave for these videos is absolutely amazing. The music punctuates so well with the ballroom dancers and Malcolm Green's slow walk across the dance floor with the drum kit between 3:01 to 3:36. Rayner's piano playing is like listening to Mozart :)

Little moments in videos stand out for me...I LOVE when Tim starts gracefully touching the lamps at 3:57....flows marvelously with the "never never never" part. I feel like that was probably improvised. It just adds to the grandiosity of the song.

Unfortunately split enz looked far too off the wall to be taken seriously at the time...but im sure Mozart Beethoven etc where also ridiculed but the music does the talking:-)

And i still don't get the hoo haaar over their appearence and style, espec when skyhooks were even worse in dress in early 70s yet were accepted

Arguably one of the finest song ever written. I await for some 20-something to discover this and do it on one of the modern song shows like American Idol or the like. No other song that I know of says "go f__k yourself" as adroitly and with such passion as this one does.

Grew up listening​ to the split-Enz. I'm from the US and no one knows who they are around these neck of the woods. I absolutely think they are one of the best out there and they were robbed because men at work made it here in the United states and all over but not the split enz ?? That's wack! smh. Reminds me of my childhood. I adore this band and always will

The Enz suffered from ridicule by the DJ's making fun of the name before they had ever heard them, and very bad placement when they toured, paring them with shows that did not attract the right crowd.
Good to see that people can see passed the fools and find the good music

The US missed out on so much, and on the rare occassion you did hear about a band it would be 1 song, giving the impression they were maybe a one hit wonder , yet back home and closer abroad, that one song wouldn't have even been peoples favs lol
other bands like Divinyls , Little River Band ( LRB ) etc were mainly mainly recognized much later for what good they achieved then people started thinking they were some newish group when in fact the songs they now liked were already 30+ years old.

Im listening to this song again in 2017 and it still pulls at my heart stings like it did when it was first released in 1980. Timeless.
