Spinners, The - Sitting On Top Of The World Lyrics

Some people say what goes around comes around
Don't pick me up with love just to put me down
If this is true what they say
Then why do they let love slip away?
So just give your love and I'll give mine, yeah

If there are greener fields and a higher ground
Then what makes loving red change to hazy brown?
When love is put to the test
It somehow weeds out the worse from best
Or maybe the best will pass you by

'Cause we are just

Sitting on top of the world
You and me baby
Twiddling our thumbs
And just thinking about it
Sitting on top of the world
Baby, without your love
Without your love
Without your love, baby
Living ain't all
All that it seems
Living ain't all, no
All that it seems, yeah

Some people think that we live upon a cloud
They just can't seem to hear though I'm speaking loud
Though some of those things are true
You can't always tell what one might do
When things of the future are right now

'Cause we are just

Sitting on top of the world
You and me baby
Twiddling our thumbs
And just thinking about it
Sitting on top of the world
Uh-huh, without your love
Without your love
Without your love
Living ain't all, no, no, no
It ain't all that it seems girl, no, no, no
All I ever want from you
Is your tender love, you see, girl
I've been so blue before
See girl, I'm a simple man
Doing the best I can to make you see that I love you, girl
I need your love
'Cause living ain't all, hey, hey
I got to tell you about it
I, I got to let you know
Can we sit on top of the world?
Twiddle our thumbs just little bit
Just little bit, babe
Twiddle our thumbs just a little bit
Watch the world go around, we'll see ourselves in love, girl
Whoa, uh-oh, see baby, love is more than living
It's the feeling that you get
When two people are giving

This is what i posted on my Facebook page a week or so ago: How "Sitting on Top of the World" by The Spinners was never a 45 hit is very hard to fathom. It stands alone as the greatest example of Wynne's ability to ad lib. That is why it became my favorite Spinners song.

Cynthia, I would love to have you critique this recording. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PE3OQSpHtQs

They 're called The Spinners not The Detroit Spinners you don't see that name on the album cover or all of their albums

    Lonnie Cook

The Detroit Spinners is the name they are known by in England because there is a Folk group there called The Spinners and they are equally famous. https://www.ebay.com/p/Essential-Collection-by-The-Detroit-Spinners-CD-Jul-2001-Spectrum/44241442?iid=132184972519&chn=ps

It's the feeling that you get when two people are giving.!

  37. Lonnie Cook

I checked with Billboard and The Spinners only had five top 20 hits from 1961 - 1971 before Phillipe. With Phillipe they had 16 in 5 yrs. With John Edwards they only had 3 in 23 yrs. That record is an indictment of management and Edwards. I had offered to replace Wynne but was never auditioned. Steve Allen told me that they did not need anyone.

What defines an artist is how style was developed; Phillipe and I both borrowed something from Billy Stewart. Ask Heikkl Suosalo at http://www.soulexpress.net/ , he wrote a 5 part story on The Spinners which included a short segment which focused on our similarity. See:http://www.soulwalking.co.uk/Lonnie%20Cook.html

    willcat

Yes, Lonnie , but the Spinners' FIRST, SECOND, FOURTH, and FIFTH million-sellers were ALL LED by BOBBY. (I'LL BE AROUND, COULD IT BE I'M FALLING IN LOVE, THEN CAME YOU, and GAMES PEOPLE PLAY)
Their FIRST-EVER chart hit (1961's "THAT'S WHAT GIRLS ARE MADE FOR'')was ALSO led by BOBBY .
Thom Bell signed The Spinners in the FIRST place because he remembered them when he was House Pianist at the Uptown, and remembered their unusually tight harmonies and Bobby's unique phrasing of songs. Wynne was not a factor back then, because he wasn't even THERE. There was no song that Wynne sang lead on that got them signed.
Also, it could be argued that The Spinners' complete lack of promotion at Motown was a BIG factor in them not having more chart hits at that label. One can't even say that his presence was what finally put the group on top, since BOBBY sang lead on BOTH the first two million-selling hits that put them there.
Plus, BOBBY was the group's Leader and Spokesman. I found this out during an interview on Soul Train , when the entire group deferred to BOBBY when they were interviewed by Don Cornelius. Here's that interview:

Lyrics to: "Sitting on top of the world"
    Written by: J. Jefferson – B. Hawes & C. Simmons

Some people say what goes around comes around.
Don’t pick me up with love just to put me down.
If this is true what they say? Then why do they let love slip away?
So Just give your love and i’ll give mine.

If there are greener fields and a higher ground?
Then what makes loving red change to hazy brown?
When love is put to the test, it somehow weeds out the worse from best.
Or maybe the best will pass you by cause we're just

    Chorus

Sitting on top of the world,
    you and me baby
Twiddling our thumbs and thinking about it.
Sitting on top of the world

    Baby, Without your love,
    Without your love,
    Without your love, babee

    Living ain’t all,
    all that it seems
    Living ain’t all, no
    All that it seems

Some people think that we live upon a cloud.
They just don’t can't seem to hear though i’m speaking loud.
Though some of those things are true,
You can’t always tell what one might do
. when things of the future are right now
    Cause we're just…

    Chorus
Sitting On Top Of The World
    you and me baby
    Twiddling Our Thumbs
    And Just Thinking About It

    Uh Huh, Without your love,
    Without your love,
    Without your love,
Living ain’t all, naw naw naw
it ain't all that it seems girl. No, no ,no
All I ever want from you
is your tender love, you see girl,
    i’ve been so blue before.

See girl I’m a simple man
Doing the best I can to make you see
    that I love you girl.
    I needa your love
    Cause living ain’t all…hey hey
I got to tell you about it.
I, I got to let you know.
Can we sit on top of the world?
Twiddle our thumbs just little bit,
    just little bit babe…

watch the world go around we'll see ourselves in love
Whoa Uh Oh! See baby, love is more than living.

Whoa Uh Oh! See baby, love is more than living.
It’s the feeling that you get,
    when two people are giving.

    kevin James

It fits with wisdom, knowing your feelings are only a part of the story. Don't forget giving is natural to some more than others. It is not always about what ya see is what ya get or in some cases what you give helps other's world go round a little easier....hope you get it....lol

    Lonnie Cook

I thought you may have had the lyric mixedup., sorry.

    kevin James

@Lonnie Cook I like discussion. We both appreciate some of the same music! Enjoy your week!

Wow. Love The Spinners. One of the greatest group of all time. There will never be another group with such harmony and joy that they gave us. Thank you Thom Bell and The Spinners.

  45. Maurice Bruton

one of the best male groups of all time they can complete against any of the old school groups anytime

    Lonnie Cook

+Maurice Bruton They had more charted hits than any other Soul group. All 19 with Phillippe.

    Maica Clarke

+Lonnie Cook ,and they were treated like porters at motown for years, I wonder what was berry gordy ' s reaction he heard and knew of their success.

    Lonnie Cook

Berry controlled or undermined the careers of artists even after they left Motown. In their case the machine behind TSOP was more powerful than Gordy.

I checked with Billboard and they only had five top 20 hits from 1961 - 1971 before Phillipe. With Phillipe they had 16 in 5 yrs. With John Edwards they only had 3 in 23 yrs.

The Spinners consistently sounded like The Spinners no matter who sang lead......my second best soul group, after The Four Tops..............Two greats that came out of Motown........

  49. Curtis Gilbert

This album is just as good as the first album, then Pick of the Litter, then Happiness are the best that you can listen to over and over again. Then came John Edwards and those albums.

    Doo Wop Hall of Fame

+Curtis Gilbert The 1st, 2nd, & 3rd are on par, next best is "Pick". You omitted the second which is "Mighty Love". John Edwards should never have been in the group.

    Curtis Gilbert

Doo Wop Hall of Fame , sorry I did omit the other great "Mighty Love" album.

  50. Bruce A. Hawes

I will get back to you with the lyrics of this song +Lonnie Cook...

  51. Bruce A. Hawes

There was a special kind of musical magic in the way +The Spinners sang the songs written by me and my songwriting partners, Charles Simmons, and Joe Jefferson. Every-time we walked in to Thom Bell's office with the next batch of songs that we would write for The Spinners next album, Thom perked up and began plotting out his production for them. Thank you everyone for your wonderful comments. And thank you +Lonnie Cook for your support of our music work together. You are a treasured friend....

Beautiful brother. They don't write love songs like this anymore. And you know that. Shalom

    Anna MooreYoung

Tower Records in Los Angeles made a great deal of money from me. Whenever they had a new vinyl released by the Spinners. I rushed to L.A. and bought it. You and your writing team were a great asset to the Spinners, did an amazing job, and kept them on the map for years with hits. I wish music today had the same vibe that older music had. I guess the memories associated with the music make you feel that warm and tingly sensation when you suddenly hear the songs being payed. The singers made you feel as though they had just experienced the very lyrics they sang about. Great job!!

Lonnie Cook The Spinners resume spoke of their accomplishment in the history of soul music. it's a shame they're not inducted in the Rock &Roll Hall of Fame. no pun intended!

    thomas t

Who determines inductees into the so-called Hall of Fame? That is what I look at.  The best criteria for excellence in musical arts are the fans; not some biased people, who arrogate onto themselves the right to decide what's good or not.

  56. NEENO LAFLAIR

I'm 24 and even I feel like what happened to the love in music and in the world this song reminds me of my grandad R.I.P Billy Brown a true Chicago playa and stepper

  66. Jamaal

I think it would have been better for you to make a facebook page for the Spinners instead of only Wynne. The Detroit Spinners are a family, their music was very friendly and family oriented. One of the things that attributed to their greatness as a group was that they all complemented each other, on record and on stage. Peace

    Lonnie Cook

When these guys sang, you could feel it!! The message was real, and you could identify it, because it about love; and it was about life.Without love, what IS life.

God Bless the genius of Thom Bell and The Spinners. I wish that music would get back to the soul, harmony, and the timeless lyrics of back in the day!!!!!
