The British Spice Girls were, in the mid-nineties, the most commercially successful female group of all time. With their slogan "Girl Power", they led to hysteria among teenagers around the world. The five girls' debut album in 1996, Spice, was the world's best selling album for a female group with over twenty-five million copies! Meanwhile, the five singles taken from Melanie B.'s debut album Melanie C., Emma Bunton, Victoria Beckham and Geri Halliwell, "Wannabe", Say You'll Be There, "2 Become 1", and the single with side A double "Mama" / "Who Do You Think You Are?" all reached number one on the UK's top singles. Especially, "Wannabe" was the biggest commercial success reaching number one in many countries, and sold over seven million copies, a big hit for a girl group never before achieved by any other girl group, and not even after the Spice Girls until today! They were very commercially successful in the US, where the album sold over seven million copies there and was the biggest selling album in 1997. The singles also had a big commercial impact, especially the first three top ten singles, and the first single hit number one on Billboard Hot 100!
Later that year came the second studio album, Spiceworld, also with great commercial success in their home country, the United Kingdom, also in the United States of America, as well as throughout Europe and other continents of the world. The album was able to sell approximately twenty million copies, and top spot in major record markets and other countries around the world. Four of the songs on the Spiceworld album were successful singles from around the world, particularly in the UK market where three of these four singles topped the UK singles chart: "Spice Up Your Life", "Too Much" and " Viva Forever ". Unfortunately, the third single, "Stop", went to second place on the UK chart.
Geri Halliwell, who was the leader of the five girls in the group, fell out for reasons that were poorly understood at the time, and left the group. At the time people thought she had left the group because of disagreements with colleague Melanie B.. But years later, she confessed the real reason for leaving her colleagues in the most famous girl group in the world. In 1999, the four girls recorded Geri Halliwell's song "Goodbye", which was also number one in the UK, making them the number one girl group in the UK. "Spice mania" was compared to "beatlemania". They were the most successful female group worldwide and the girls' success is compared to the same "fab four" success, The Beatles!
In 2000, and as a quartet, they recorded their third and final album of originals, Forever. The album, of course, did not have the same great commercial impact as previous albums, but it was reasonably successful for the time when records were sold in large quantities. Despite failing to get first place in the UK top singles, Forever took second place and was certified platinum there. In the United States, it reached number 39 on the Billboard 200. It had a moderate success. As for the singles, only two were taken from the album but edited in just one single as double A, "Holler" and "Let Love Lead The Way". Fortunately, it reached number one on the UK Singles Chart. Note that the Forever album had very important producers and composers such as Darkchild, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. The album came full of Pop, R&B, Hip hop songs. A luxurious production! Between Ballads and songs with more rhythm, Forever is considered by many as the best album of the Spice Girls. But as I mentioned, of the three studio albums, it was the least commercially successful. If five million copies are considered a commercial failure!
All the girls in the girls band have had their solo artistic career. But only Victoria Beckham had little success. They all had a nickname: Melanie C. (Sporty Spice), Melanie B. (Scary Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice) and Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice). After a nearly 10-year hiatus, they reunited to celebrate the Spice Girls' 10th birthday in 2006. And another album on the market to remember the good old days, this time it was a hit collection, Greatest Hits, with some new songs. Luckily I have two albums in CD format, Spice 1996 and Forever 2000. Spice Girls forever! And Girl Power is Eternal too! They are the best selling female group of all time with more than 85 million records!
