Spektor, Regina - Open Lyrics

I am
Down the road and up the hill
I wait for you still
Wires 'round my fingers
Potentially lovely
Perpetually human
Suspended and open
Open
Open

I am
Through the woods and past the trains
I wait here in vain
Scrubbing out the stains again
Potentially lovely
Perpetually human
Suspended and open
Open
Open

In the night, the snow starts falling
And everybody stares
Through their windows at the streetlights
Too beautiful to see

I am
In a room I've built myself
Four straight walls
One floor
One ceiling
And day after day, I wake up feeling
Day after day, I wake up feeling, feeling

Potentially lovely
Perpetually human
Suspended and open
Open
Open
Open

Open up
Your eyes
And then...

  9. N.... W....

This is a beautiful song, but the gasps really freaked me out and made me uncomfortable. Regina has an amazing voice and a genre all of her own.

  10. O.... W....

The first gasp scared me so hard.

  11. A.... R....

I don't listen to this song in public. The gasps, you know... i always do them, i always cry.

  12. E.... ....

I remember the night when I fell asleep and forgot to turn off the music playing on my phone and this song suddenly plays. The gasps in the end suddenly jolted and woke me scared pissing myself! I'm so scared I had to delete the song. haha!

This happened to me twice. the first time was the creepy chants in the end of the song "A Day In Life" by The Beatles.

  13. C.... B....

Ahhhhhh she's sooo good at music stuff >.< how creative!! I wanted to put this in my phone so bad but once I heard the deep breathing/gasping I couldn't anymore cause it scared me too much XD. Dang it!!! Like seriously, if I wasn't scared of loud noises and the fact that the breathing/gasps just all in general terrify me O.o... I want it so bad... >.< ugh dang it..

  14. D.... M....

This song really hits home for me.. I have really bad anxiety and I feel like this song perfectly represents what the daily struggle is... I'm in tears

  15. j.... ....

This is for "open" minded people. sometimes they are being judged or suspended by the people who has a religion. see for yourself cause I'm really bad at explaining this, English is not my first language.

  16. d.... ....

OHHH MY GDO I LOVE THIS OGN

  17. J.... S....

I agree with Matt. I can't listen without crying.

  18. J.... S....

Wires around my fingers...scrubbing out the stains again. Too beautiful to see.

OOOH wwa (punch in the stomach)

I couldn't stop crying when I first heard this song. I will never stop.

  19. p.... ....

@faith-trust-and-colorguard Are you on the RCI color guard team?

  20. A.... J....

This song scared the shit out of me the first time...

  21. n.... ....

For some reason I keep picturing an animate toy hanging onto a balloon as it floats into an increasingly stormy sky

  22. M.... S....

You have to let the sound, and the words, flow through you and touch upon the keys within your own mind that relate to this "physical exhilaration". Life is but an illusion and we think in metaphors, we feel in the same manner. This is amazing, along with many of her other songs. If one is willing to feel her music, she lets one float on planes that are nearly intangible. Her music is amazing... not so perfectly simple but pleasant in passing... the closer one gets the more drastically moving.

  23. M.... S....

This is my 1st night of exposure to this artist; I cried over the last 5 full songs or so. This is powerfully well produced and you're right -makes people uncomfortable. Her voice is unreal and music even more so - the word patterns, combinations, the rhythm! I cannot make logical sense out of how much this has affected me this evening. It's just beautiful, and so real. I can feel it beaming through my being, gripping. To laugh is to ignore.this truly amazing artist. To cry is to be released!!!!

  24. C.... H....

One time I listened to this song with my roommate in the room and she thought the gasping was me and FREAKED OUT

  25. C.... H....

When I first had my parents listen to this album on a family road trip, when the gasping started the LAUGHED. And I suppose it's partially because people often laugh at things that make them feel uncomfortable, but I straight wanted to be like GUYS, please, please just listen to this song, the lyrics, and you will understand why the gasping is NOT funny and why this song is so emotional, it's about struggling to be, so could you please not laugh.

  26. J.... W....

She doesn't write music the way it sounds, she writes it how it FEELS.Take "Daniel cowman", initially its repitition is very abrasive and off-putting but anyone who's been through sth like that knows how the tragedy repeats itself in your head, trying to make sense of it, until you feel like you're about to explode, then you do.You cry, you drop, you release yourself into the exquisite agony.Until sth (like day to day life) snaps you out of it and starts the cycle over til you make peace with it

  27. M.... ....

Exactly. Especially the "poems set to music" part.

  28. T.... K....

I'm not sure whether to thank you or apologise... I'll do both. Sorry! And thank you!

  29. j.... ....

I think that comment just had the same effect on me as the gasping. Bravo.

  30. J.... R....

Maybe her lyrics weren't meaningful here, but Regina rarely assigns meaning to her songs because she says she wants other people to assign meanings to them for themselves, but when she does, it's usually revealed that they are either a metaphor or an allusion. If you listen to regurgitated radio pop, you'll find the lyrics are very most often meaningless. But this is far from the case with many bands in progressive, metal, avant-garde, indie, anti-folk, and many other less popular genres.

  31. J.... R....

Actually, you know, not every song is literal. Sure, the Beatles lyrics usually were, or they were just nonsense, but Regina Spektor is a very metaphorical person. Why COULDN'T lyrics have deep meaning? They're just poems that have been set to music. Look at a band like Pink Floyd - their album The Wall dealt with WWII, drug abuse, insanity, domestic abuse, emotional isolation, and many other "deep" subjects, and usually not in a literal way. I could list many other bands who do the same thing.

  32. t.... J....

That's awesome lol. I always thought it was just about coming home. However it still proves my point.

  33. J.... R....

Actually, "A Hard Day's Night" came from Ringo accidentally saying that phrase. He was notorious for using the wrong words when speaking. Same with "Tomorrow Never Knows."

  34. T.... K....

When she- the gasping, I swear, it tears something from me. It's so raw and unfiltered and real and it just rips my chest open again and again every time.

  35. X.... K....

holy shit that scared the shit out of me

  36. C.... K....

Real music, real words, real life.

  37. t.... J....

Hate to breaks it to you dudes. A song usually doesn't go that deep. It's a subject with detail being the lyrics. "Phew!, honey I'm home" became hard days night.

  38. d.... s....

Not at all glad I can help interpret the song for someone else its just what the song meant to me I would have went on and on if it wasn't for the character limit!

  39. 4.... O....

This is the most agonizingly deep, true, and humanizing description of any song I've ever read. Beautifully explained and orchestrated perfectly with wonderful imagery. Your words truly rip and move something deep inside of me.
    Was that an over reaction?

  40. d.... s....

This is a beautifully written song. I see it as someone who is closed of from others, stuck in their own mind. Waiting in vain for someone to pull them out, holding lovely potential if they are set free but perpetually forced to be themselves. Feeling suspended and helpless in their vast mind. They are past the woods holding their bad memories. Scrubbing out the reminders of their past. They are trapped in their own mind, slowly suffocating, hence the gasps. Being finally set free at the end.

  41. J.... S....

    She's been skipping days
Spilling her drinks in the sink

  42. J.... S....

Wow. Regina. This is one of her best songs. She has a lot of good songs. Regina. That's why we love her.

  43. m.... ....

This is a masterpiece of a song.

  44. I.... K....

I am not so impressed with this CD. Regina don't start slowing down!

  45. L.... S....

    The gasps scared 13 people

  46. l.... ....

the first time I heard the gasps i fell out of my chair. lol

  47. J.... S....

If y'all had listened to Regina all these years, you'd know the grunts were part of her music. It's her thing and it's a good thing. I guess y'all call them grasps. I expect her to do that to give emphasis to certain vocals. Listen to the part when she does it. Four Walls. It gives meaning to the song. Think about it and listen to it. She is so good. Better than you know.

  48. M.... ....

wouldn't be same without the gasps..

  49. c.... ....

    beautiful song

  50. H.... I....

The gasps are like she's suffocating in her room. Maybe experiencing claustrophobia. It's pretty creative... I mean of course it is. It's Regina.

    H.... I....

To me it sounds like coming up for air from underwater. They really pushed it in the mix. It was too much for me at first, but now Iove it. Reminds me of coming up from underwater while surfing.

  51. C.... ....

Every time the gasps come along I gasp along. Always a bit light-headed by the end of them, but I don't care that much. X) They just feel perfect to me, although admittedly it took some time for me to get to that point.

  52. F.... F....

its gonna start in a minute you just have to wait.

  53. T.... ....

I'm ready for the video now... Regina?... Regina???

  54. k.... ....

    Gasps? My body is ready.

Okay, so they're kinda silly... okay more than silly wow those were pretty interesting i don't really know what to put here.

  55. E.... C....

Personally, I love the gasps in this song. This is the song I'm performing to in winter guard and they really do make a difference

  56. A.... R....

Not to be foul, but who gives a rat's ass about how "crazy" the gasps are? Are you even LISTENING to the song?! Are you not feeling the emotional resonance every single second that her voice is lilting, crooning, crying, triumphing? Are you not feeling the rise and fall of the orchestrated landscape illuminating the vocals? This song is not just gasps. This song is a story, an ode, a life. Soak in the whole thing, or risk missing out on something beautiful.

  57. a.... d....

    The gasps are perfect.

  58. J.... ....

    It´s a really beautiful song

  59. D.... N....

While musically the gasps are ugly, when you listen to the lyrics they're very powerful. The song is about the perseverance of the human spirit, and the gasps could represent an anxiety attack brought on by stress or the oppression of the "room she built herself", which is perhaps the source of her anxieties, or even an issue she's created within her own mind.

There's also a strong possibility that the song is about a concentration camp (Anne Frank?) and the gasping is from a gas chamber.

  60. E.... T....

    Those gasps scared mee!! Omgg

  61. E.... T....

    What time are the gasps?

  62. T.... C....

I was waiting for the gasp everyone was talking about, halfway through the song, I was like 'where' is it? Then as I looked up *GASP scared the shit outta me

  63. g.... ....

The gasps make me feel like I'm gasping...

  64. A.... L....

The gasps aren't a joke. Personally, I feel like this song is something to do with an anxiety attack the gasps express that.

  65. A.... ....

those gasps got me laughing, bwahahahahahaha it's just so ridicilously funny

  66. K.... ....

    THAT GASP

  67. A.... F....

Oh my god.. those gasps! That's what I love about Regina she doesn't represses about doing rare sounds and stuffs... I love her.. she's so versatile.

  68. N.... P....

those are some interesting gasps. At first I thought she was gaging. But I still love her :p.

  69. J.... N....

Ok...maybe the comments weren't exaggerating about the gasping...

  70. v.... d....

the gasp part added the beauty of this song!!! =)

  71. J.... ....

omg, after listening, now i understand how killer this gasp is.

  72. w.... ....

When she started gasping I freaked and nearly spat out what I was eating

  73. R.... S....

I read the comments when this song first started so i knew about the gasps but i thought they were just going to be little gasps.. I was really wrong.

  74. M.... S....

Gasping scared the crap out of me!!! but I love this song

  75. M.... D....

lady gaga shit..still an awesome song but ._.

  76. M.... D....

    the fuck ._.

  77. L.... E....

omg the gasps freaked me out xD

  78. J.... R....

    My thoughts exactly! :)))

  79. R.... L....

This belongs in a Tim Burton Film! I can see a Jack Skelington type character searching for something while this song plays in the background!

  80. R.... L....

Ok good, not all the songs are like "Don't Leave Me". I Don't like that song. This is more like her old stuff ^-^

  81. T.... ....

That gasping part really freaks me out. :'(

  82. K.... ....

I love the intentionally dropped beats and unexpected chord changes. It works on so many levels!

  83. L.... M....

officially the scariest regina song ever.

  84. l.... ....

This is such a hauntingly beautiful song.

  85. R.... ....

Regina is tied with Nina Simone as my favourite singer\song-writer.

  86. P.... I....

Regina's songs in every Album never fails to amaze me. Her album, in my perspective, is a piece of herself and something wonderful. I don't ever have time to expect amazing things from her 'cause every time I try, she produces something worth wild.

  87. T.... S....

I don't want to sound extreme, but this song's structure of the melody kind of reminds me of Chopin, the way dark sounds and bright sounds alter and give one into the other and then back again.

  88. b.... m....

I am going to her concert, and I am going to watch her and write a book called 'What I saw from the cheap seats'

  89. K.... ....

Not sure I like the gasps. They are probably wonderful live though

  90. M.... R....

i thought she was...having a heart attack....i saw the comments about gasps in the comments...but i didn't expect battle cry gasps XD

  91. F.... T....

I just go to some hidden places inside myself with this music. Regina is otherworldly.

  92. D.... ....

George Gershwin meets Tom Waits and has a bizarre and beautiful baby.

  93. b.... ....

the vomiting/gasp thing reminds me of kate bush

  94. M.... V....

honestly the most beautiful song i've ever heard. sobbing.

  95. C.... ....

...these gasps sound like vomitting. Still, she's incredible !

  96. e.... ....

We waited in front of the concert hall. I guess we were really lucky that she came out there (the bus was in front and they had loaded all the stuff before) but we didn't say anything, just waited till almost 1 ;) But sure worth it :) try it!

  97. S.... B....

Where did you wait? I've heard some people wait in the concert halls and stand there and beg the crew people to bring regina out. You are VERY lucky to meet her!

  98. e.... ....

I "met" her since I waited with others for 2 hours after the gig and it was lovely and strange :) I just quickly had her sign my poster because poor girl looked really tired
