Spektor, Regina - Laughing With Lyrics
No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one’s laughing at God
When they’re starving or freezing or so very poor
When the doctor calls after some routine tests
No one’s laughing at God
When it’s gotten real late
And their kid’s not back from the party yet
No one laughs at God
When their airplane start to uncontrollably shake
No one’s laughing at God
When they see the one they love, hand in hand with someone else
And they hope that they’re mistaken
No one laughs at God
When the cops knock on their door
And they say we got some bad news, sir
No one’s laughing at God
When there’s a famine or fire or flood
But God can be funny
At a cocktail party when listening to a good God-themed joke, or
Or when the crazies say He hates us
And they get so red in the head you think they’re ‘bout to choke
God can be funny,
When told he’ll give you money if you just pray the right way
And when presented like a genie who does magic like Houdini
Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket and Santa Claus
God can be so hilarious
Ha ha
Ha ha
No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one’s laughing at God
When they’ve lost all they’ve got
And they don’t know what for
No one laughs at God on the day they realize
That the last sight they’ll ever see is a pair of hateful eyes
No one’s laughing at God when they’re saying their goodbyes
But God can be funny
At a cocktail party when listening to a good God-themed joke, or
Or when the crazies say He hates us
And they get so red in the head you think they’re ‘bout to choke
God can be funny,
When told he’ll give you money if you just pray the right way
And when presented like a genie who does magic like Houdini
Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket and Santa Claus
God can be so hilarious
No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one laughing at God in hospital
No one’s laughing at God in a war
No one’s laughing at God when they’re starving or freezing or so very poor
No one’s laughing at God
No one’s laughing at God
No one’s laughing at God
We’re all laughing with God

whose still listening to this in 2019?
no one's laughing after your high ends
Listening 2010-2012
Hi! Wonderful song, sounds like an amazing worship! I came here after see this music in a brazilian Christian channel, Teologueiros.
This song makes me really sad, but triggers good memories of my Grandpa.
Found out about her today.. I'm in love and I've never heard anything like her
This song has haunted me for many years now. The overall message seems pretty simple, I believe. Basically that's it's easy to laugh at god (or life, or whatever) when you're doing well, but not so much when you're not or tragedy strikes. But the last line is what puzzles me. "We are all laughing with god". So god is laughing too. But what is god laughing at? At our jokes? At us? At our struggles and misery?
OMG I just heard this on 101.9 wdet Detroit public radio station. I can't believe this was 10 yrs ago. I listened to Regina on repeat. I owned some of her music but I've never heard this! 🎶
I have some legitimate frustration towards Christianity and I figured that YouTube comment section of the song is a good place to put it I don't understand how people can stand to show faith in something that has no physical form I don't get how people can look up and smile at an all-powerful the allow senseless Slaughter violence poverty disease suffering in all of its forms to plague us I don't understand how people believe in something that routinely steals innocence from tiny children not even old enough to experience puberty how can people look me in the eyes and tell me that this all-powerful Creator loves me when my entire life I've been 100% alone and then for people to say it's in a big plan what is that supposed to mean I was supposed to get my rib broken in Middle School because I was white my mom was supposed to die of cancer and my family was supposed to blame me for it I can't ever see the light and the way you people do for that reason and because my entire life I've survived On My Own Strength and nobody else's and if somebody was folding my deck while I wasn't looking I don't want to and if somebody was folding my deck while I wasn't looking how humiliating is that
All religions believe in "god" or a higher power. Not just christianity. Why hate on the christians over the muslims, buddists, jews, etc. BTW christians generally believe in "free will" not a "big plan". I think her message is "when desperate, you start to question your significance, your life and appreciate what you have". Don't hate...love.
@xy xy no no no i just dont like faith in god in general and i chose Christianity bc it was my personal struggle with it bc i grew up around them so at my moms funeral i was told "she is in a better place" "she is meant to be there" but that was still my mother who is in the ground and i know she wanted to be with her family no fall to a illness
And i hate the ideal not the people
Her hair is so pretty
Regina Spektor is 1 beautiful & romantic girl with avant garde fashion! I still wish I could invite to go jogging/racing & play arcade/video games! >>>>
When things go tough or out of place, tragedies happen, people are dying from serious illnesses, women are being raped, poor are becoming poorer, innocent children are being beaten and abused, etc.... Everything you think a (loving ,perfect) god would not allow to happen to his "creations".Only, these things keep happening anyway, but nobody dares to question and takes time to reassess the situation, like maybe we're on our own and we should just be all in this together.
2019?✋
I personally knew people who laughed to the face of death when they found out they had a disease,
there you go, this song isn't true !
802 didn't get a joke
I feel she is saying we look to God in times of 'need' but don't see God in everyday experiences, happy or sad. We turn to God when we personally need help, otherwise, not so much.
GOD IS GOOD
😯🥺Her videos, her voice, even herself, reminds me of the only little good souvenirs of my childhood...😭, just like a lullaby🥺😔❤
This song makes me happy but sad at the same time
"No one laughs at God", because there is no God. As simple as that. It is a myth, well preserved through the millennia due to an arrogance and ignorance of human population, fortunately it is on a steep decline in the recent years.
sublime! me encanta la simplicidad de su talento!
Matt Jamison , god bless the leftovers
First heard this one on cartoon network like 10 years ago. This gives me lots of good memories

"We're not laughing at you, we're laughing WITH you!" That's what you say to someone when you talked smack about them and regret them hearing it.
This hit home too hard.
fat old whore
anyone just started to cry and needed the cry for a bit?
This song always brings deep sobs. Loss & grief written into music.
So noble
WHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA MVR SCHAMPAERT
I think that the message that Regina Spektor is trying to get across is that our opinion of God seems to change willy nilly depending on the situation we are in. The constant mention that "No one's laughing with God" whenever she is stating a depressing or sorrowful scenario highlights the fact that sometimes people believe God is evil and playing some sort of cruel trick on them when something bad happens. The phrase "But God can be funny..." tells of how, when life is good, people go back to thinking that God is just and good. The song shows that most of the time, people just want to blame god for any sorrowful event, and praise him when things are going good.
No one laughs at god when after going to help in a small town and your long-time paralyzed wife briefly wakes up and gets pregnant gets you accused of raping her and after trying to help a man you and your wife get kicked out of the town without everything you own except a wheelchair and you have to find yourself a way in because your wife won't make it on the outside, only to get there to keep her safe and go back after questioning your morality and take someone else's pain yourself so that no one else needs to suffer from it.
Matt was a hero.
Religion is your choice, but you believe in God. It is in you, but so many do not even know themselves..let alone God.
But way to many people are extremely arrogant, and think they have control, until they lose it. When the privileges of illusion are lost.
So beautiful

The instance where one would explore every option in a dire situation or in emotional distress, like praying to a god or refrain from "tempting the fates" does not actually prove anything other than that most of us let go of our inhibitions and have a decent amount of humility if pushed far enough. To me this song is about seizing the time we do have and just open ourselves up in everyday life instead of closing ourselves off. Connecting to your emotional self and letting go of pretences and facades can be fun.
Man plans... God laughs
Pure Magritte and Escher! Awesome video!
Memories from a kid
So beautiful

regina has the softest most sweetest voice i have ever heard she is my idol.
dad- who do you you want to listen to?
me-RAGINA SPECKTOR she is the beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeest
Satan is doing all the laughing...laughing at people who thought Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton were better than Trump, laughing at people who voted for Trump, laughing at the empty headed hop head Libertarian Gary Johnson, laughing at all the other ridiculous candidates, laughing at all the all the "Democratic Socialists" after the example of the 20th century and 250 million murdered directly for Socialism sake....yup, Satan has had a terribly good laugh at Americans...that have been allowed to let themselves be played, have allowed their frustrations, anger, and fears provoke them to suicidal narcissism.
God...on the other hand, is crying, watching his children fight each other...when there is barely a difference between them, allowing themselves to be tricked, fooled, and choose to blindly follow hatred. God surrenders the sinner to his sin...because once they are enraged by their sin, there is no saving them...they do evil in the name of their "Good", and that is the one sin that is unforgivable.
my interpretation of this song is that it is someone who is caught in a position where they are stepping away from everyone else and because they are distraught at something, they wonder why when had things happen, they don't laugh at and mock god for doing this/not stopping this, and wondering why they all depend on God and think it's not his fault when bad things happen, even though we're told that he controls these things and that he loves us, and at the end, when it says, "we're all laughing with god" it means that God is upset with himself for not stopping these things because we all depend on him (most of us) and that he's guilty for not at least trying to stop it. and then, well, it's that we all laugh and cry with him. how's that for a non religion related interpretation, you don't have to be religious to believe in god. (don't know why I felt like I had to add that very last part)
edit: in a nutshell, the viewing point is someone asking why nobody mocks and laughs at god for these things.
This song almost change my views about God..
Sarah.. pure happy. Deborah queen bee.. If Christians love because god first loved them. Then is it god who creates faith or man. who can demand faith other than god? If the jews believe and served Babylon then is no a easy thing to see that i should serve for i am no called to judge men but discern my own actions? My own actions right from wrong? When i am perfect then i can judge right? For people are worried your will force me to convert or judge me or both?
This an old posting but I can validate the song. The most meaningful religious service I ever saw was a priest saying a mass off the engine deck of an M-1 Abrams at sundown on 23 February 1991. I never knew so many last minute Catholics in my life. The priest broke tradition and wore gold robes on that day and hundreds of us showed up ... many were atheists and every other denomination, but they were all there. G-11. No one was laughing at god then. Almost 30 years ago and I still remember the glitter off the gold like it was yesterday. It's weird what you remember. A dusty bit of desert in the middle of nowhere ... nobody was laughing at god.
È un capolavoro
Everyone see: Human of the Year https://youtu.be/RYTnk6_DCqU
throw back to 2009 at OHA with my maroon asus laptop with my headphones on doing an essay. this song was on repeat
To me, It sounds like shes angry at God. I always saw it as that ever since I first started listening to it. She acts so sarcastic when she says "Ha ha " After saying the God can be funny and explaining why. And shes explaining all the thing that happens with people who get hurt and shes sees it as God is laughing at her meaning God letted this happen Blaming him. And so the song is more of song of her angry at God. I mean everyone gets angry at God at one point of their life when someone dies or something happens. But I hate to see the song as that interpretation. I would rather see it as if from the other comments of how people make God as a joke and take death not seriously,
and misread religon and
making excuses of why they do stuff with religon.
Как же хорошо ,что ты есть.
Here in 2019??
this songs so cool
Saw this once in a cartoon network section I think I was call boombox back in 2009. Couldn't remembered the name of the singer or song, all I could remember was the "sky piano" and the peaceful voice of Regina. I become obsessed to find this song again, even were days I didn't slept well. Searching in every page google showed me, changing words in the browser I even used the Yahoo! Answers to see if somebody saw that song in CN because they only showed the video ONCE!
A month past and I was losing my mind when I had this idea, "Well if the normal google doesn't help maybe if i search blue piano with clouds in google images..." and then saw the same exact piano (well, the one in the album cover of this song) from a blog ironically ranting on Regina for changing her style in the album... but I felt some of the greatest releases in my life yet. I was 13 back then, can you imagine if I just said something like "o well i guess i'll never heard that marvelous voice again" oh boy...😂
Thank you Regina
For causing us to
Ponder the definition of GOD
If GOD is LOVE and if we are all connected
on one planet and it is the Planet sustaining our Lives
Seems to me
God is Nature
Mother Nature?
Once you have heard this song you will NEVER FORGET THE WORDS ( if you can see and read) and if you are able to both see and hear ,it will be even more meaningful
I always get the feeling this woman is just smarter than the rest of us... in the best of ways.
My favorite Regina Spector song. I’m surprised I still know all these lyrics too lol
I work in a hospital literally and in the most dificul times when all hope is lost no one, no one laughs at god. Not even us the people working there.
I heard this song for the first time tonight while listening to" Live from here" on public radio.Chris Theile(spl.?) Sang it with Sara Watkins and I was so moved by the Beautiful Words and Melody, I couldn't wait to get home on my bike and find who owned the incredible mind that thought of this song.

Oh, my! How accurate, powerful + potent! blessings!
My father, who was never told once by his mother that he was loved.
I have hated what he's done, I questioned him, I doubted him, I have feared for him as much as I have feared him. Been rejected by him, and have been misunderstood by him, as deeply and deeper as everyone else ever has.
But I've known him. Seen his best intentions. And for all he's put me through, through his own anger, and depression and trauma and hate,
I still love him like God.
That good the world hadn't completely taken from him, I still aspire towards.
And if God is indeed that celestial father,
he still deserves the respect of being seen just the same.
Without excusing his faults nor denying his intent.
You want to know the difference between a god fearing man and a god loving man?
God loving men still care enough about his demons to call them out while still looking up.
The first time I heard this song, I thought it was saying that god doesn’t always have to be taken seriously. Then I listened to it a few more times, and realized it was instead saying, that People don’t take him seriously unless they’re in a serious situation. (like the ones listed in the song.) also I know I phrased this weird, I do get the meaning of the song, im just really bad a describing things without actually talking.
Thanks Eminem for letting me know about this talented artist.
Música maravilhosa...
Omg this is almost ten years old. I feel old!!!!

The Leftovers brought me here
Chord progression sounds similair to Dido - Thank you lol
Regina addressed the meaning, or lack thereof. It was basically a conglomeration of thoughts and she said that she doesn't have any set belief, that's she's suspicious of people who do. lol She said she loves atheists and existentialists and that she writes based off random thoughts or experiences. I'll quote the interview below:
---
Some of your listeners have said that your latest album, Far, had too many religious undertones for their liking, and some have even called it “preachy”. As a listener myself, I feel your references are just drawn from your philosophies, maybe related to your background or to myths and stories that you enjoy. What are your thoughts on this?
*Spektor: Well, I mean, to tell you the truth I haven’t seen a lot of people saying that, but maybe you know more about it because you’re in the blog world. (Laughing) So I guess there’s a lot more talking there. Sometimes people treat records as if, “you sit down and now you write a record”, so they say stuff like that. I always hear people say, “Oh, Begin To Hope is such a more maturely written record than Soviet Kitsch,” or something like that. And to me it’s like, half of the songs on Begin To Hope are older than the songs on Soviet Kitsch!
Right! And it’s the same on Far, isn’t it? Some of those songs, you’ve been playing live for years, haven’t you?
*Spektor: Some songs on Far are older than both of them, because I included some of the songs from the time of my second record. I think the way a record comes together, it’s not really like, a reflection. Nothing is like, “and now I sit down and I write a preachy religious record”! I think I just end up… You know, I’m always thinking about philosophy, and religion, and spirituality; and how those things go together or how they really don’t go together, and where they help each other and where they really push on each other. And I love myths, and I love stories, and I love religion, and I love traditions, and I love atheism, and I love existentialism, and I love all kinds of things, you know, and my thoughts kind of fluctuate. So I think I’ve always written songs that are looking at it from all these different ways and so you know, it’s just like, it’s all over the place.
Your songs always have some sort of social commentary, whether it’s a criticism or just an observation. So what are your views on humanity and our society?
*Spektor: They’re all over the place! Just like my songs, you know? I mean, I think that’s why music is there, you know? In like one show, you could express 10 different viewpoints on the same thing because to me, I feel like I’m looking at it differently. In a show I’ll play “Laughing With”, and “Man Of A Thousand Faces”, and “Machine”. Those are three different ways to look at the world. You know, I don’t have, and I don’t really like-(pauses, probably to avoid offending). I don’t have any kind of set beliefs and I’m very suspicious of people who do.
To me it’s like, you know, there’s a lot of people that hijack religion, for example, and try and sell it-spiritual economics, I think there’s a name for it. I hate that shit! But I’m also really very interested in religion and really I think that some of it really… brings a lot of good, you know. It’s like one of those things, when you’re reading a book, and the first paragraph is really great and the second paragraph sucks, but it’s [neither evil nor] good.
I think music is just there for people to go into. So I will always write songs about anything that I think about. To look at a song as a thesis, is kind of silly to me. Then it’s just like, it’s what you were talking about, “being trapped in your art”. I think there are enough preachers out there; I’m not here to preach. I’m not telling people how to live, but I like thinking about how people live and looking at different things, and I will always do that.
Why are people getting so worked up about this song in the comment section? Someone says what they think the song is about and others release a 4 paragraph essay on how their belief is wrong. Everyone has their own personal opinions and interpretations on the song and what it means I personally don’t think that it’s about religion (and I’m a religious person) but it’s a song and is supposed to be perceived in anyway you want.
That was kinda hypocritical of me cuz I wrote a long paragraph arguing w people but I don’t really care cuz this is YouTube and u can give ur opinion! Just don’t make it a toxic place
I love how the last line of the song changes the whole song from being anti-atheist to anti-God, by saying God is laughing at us when we are suffering and if we laugh too we are laughing with him.
