Sparks - Girl From Germany Lyrics

How I wished my folks were gracious hosts and not dismayed
But wit and wisdom take a backseat girl when you're that afraid
Oh no, bring her home and the folks look ill
My word, they can't forget, they never will
They can hear the storm troops on our lawn when I show her in
And the F? is alive and well in our panelled den
Oh no, bring her home and the folks look ill
My word, they can't forget that war, what a war

My word, she's from Germany
Well, it's the same old country but the people have changed
My word... Germany
With its splendid castles and its fine cuisine

Well, the car I drive is parked outside, it's German-made
They resent that less than the people who are German-made
Oh no, bring her home and the folks look ill
My word, they can't forget that war, what a war, some war

My word... Germany
Well, it's the same old country but the people have changed
My word... Germany
With its splendid castles and its fine cuisine, its lovely German women
And its wonderful rivers that do flow from her hills

My word, she's from Germany
Well, it's the same old country but the people have changed
My word, she's from Germany
With its splendid castles and its fine cuisine

My word, she's from Germany
Well, it's the same old country but the people have changed
My word, she's from Germany
With its splendid castles and its fine cuisine

My word, she's from Germany
Well, it's the same old country but the people have changed
My word, she's from Germany
With its splendid castles, its fine cuisine, its lovely German women and you and me!

Just last night come across a spectacular example of "Girl From Germany".. i was told about two elderly parents who were visiting their only son and his German wife in Germany.. the subject came up of where he would be buried when he died.. his wife immediately tried to reassure his parents that everything was already taken care of - that he would be buried in her family plot with her family where she herself would be buried..
His wife then took his parents there to show them how nice it all was.. but what freaked them out was the grave of his wife's already dead father complete with all SS regalia commensurate with his position in that institution..

The funny thing is SPARKS sounded British better than the Brits themselves, they also had a little bit of German at that time ,,,
rather than that they've sparked exquisite European influence ----- But of course they're better than any American Band

    W.... Z....

Wowee Zowee So they're better than themselves? Because they're an American band so... But I wouldn't put down American bands, not to say Sparks aren't on an upper echelon of Rock. But so are American bands such as The Velvet Underground, Talking Heads, Ramones, and The Replacements.

Most original band of all time, amazing songs for over years

How can one unironically like this?

    G.... ....

Too bad the Hitler mustache was never 86ed

    @Rasta Lique make a splash

@frank zappa's pussy These bands are all from the same stock. Look into Laurel Canyon. Anyway, Zappa has nothing on these guys. I'm a fan of Zappa, but this band is cut and polished. I don't care for Russ Mael's falsetto, but his vocal chops are just flat out incredible. Sparks does all of this with half the effort of any Zappa work.

@RagbagMcShag If you know presentation, and I'm not talking about showmanship, the presentation of Sparks is about as good as it gets. Yes, the vocalist's timbre is 'irritating' and there is no real pop culture cliche to draw you in, but the subtleties of this performance are among the best. You have to appreciate musicianship and the production qualities that this work encompasses. It is definitely not for the casual listeners.

this song for me started Sparks journey of amazing music I love every album they have done and there is 22 truly amazing band

I find myself listening more to Sparks than anyone else these days, however I am more critical. I often compare Sparks to my other 70's fav David Bowie who had periods of greatness and then periods of mediocrity. I LOVED 'Space Oddity' and then his greatest 'Hunky Dory' but then IMHO he got soft during the overrated glitter rock era which I did not like so much ('Queen Bitch' being real glam rock). In fact it was Sparks masterpiece 'Kimono my House' and Eno that became my favs at that point. However they never repeated that greatness again until 'Gratuitous sax and senseless Violins' while Bowie's Eno period was his greatest from 'Station to Station' to 'Ashes to ashes'. The 80's sucked for both of them but they came back in the 90's with much of their best work.

Ron Mael is simply a singular composer; incomparable! Who else would write a song like this?

  17. M.... H....

  18. J.... ....

They would open with this song at the Whiskey A-Go Go in '72

    J.... ....

I suppose you don't remember a complete setlist or own a live recording from that era, Justine? I envy you for having been there. Didn't get to know them until 1974.

    J.... ....

I saw them 6 times there.....songs they did from the 3rd LP (that never was) 1. They Make Great Pets2. She's Getting Funnier...they did most of Woofer and about half of the Halfnelson Lp…..they also opened a couple of times with I Like Girls.....I've seen 100's of bands live and this line up is still my favorite band I've ever seen......

  19. G.... ....

    Brilliant!!

  20. J.... F....
