Sparks - Amateur Hour Lyrics
Lawns grow plush in the hinterlands
It's the perfect little setting for the one night stands
Now the drapes are drawn and the lights are out
It's the time to put in practice what you've dreamed about
To be more like people better than you
[Chorus:]
Amateur Hour goes on and on
When you turn pro you know she'll lets you know
Amateur Hour goes on and on
When you turn pro you know
She tells you so
Girls grow tops to go topless in
Our voices change at a rapid pace
I could start a song a tenor and then end as bass
Choose your partners everyone
If you hesitate, the good ones are gone
[Chorus]
Dance, laugh, wine, dine, talk and sing
But those cannot replace what is the real thing
It's a lot like playing the violin
You cannot start off to be Yehudi Menuhin
[Chorus]

Sparks Amateur Hour Comments
I found this single amongst the family record collection when I was child (about the time of it's release), I played it and asked my brother, something on the lines of 'why have I not been told about this brilliant song'?
Lawns grow plush in the hinterlands, it's the perfect little setting for the one night stands, the drapes are drawn and the lights are out, it's the time to put in practise what you've dreamed about. Genius lyrics.
Great song, hard to choose between this and never turn your back on Mother Earth, both genius songs,1974 the year I left school and also lost my virginity, brill times!
a excellent song and a fantastic album.
fantastic tune
Bien agréable à écouter .🙋💐💐💐💐💐💐💐
Very eclectic, atonal arrangements.....Sparks were eons ahead of their time. I NEVER get tired of listening to this lovely album.
Reminds me of early Roxy Music.. 2 Great groups..
Happy sound .
This song slaps
Love Sparks, and was lucky enough to go on the 'Kimono my House' tour, after meeting Adrian Fisher, at Leeds Town Hall, backstage.
RIP my beloved Adrian💕
le meilleur
i was only six when sparks were big thanks to my sister she taught me much still have the album we all saw them in leeds last year they were ace.
They probably used some very simple technique for it, but I love the echo effect on the vocals during the chorus.
It really is something that reverb I agree. When the band stops and it's just the vocals (1.57) it seems to be an early reflections reverb but yeah definitely something special. Edit..actually it's gated at that part?
Anyone here because of Dallon Weekes’ insta story?
The geisha with the fan gets the other is shocked I love it I'm with fan girl
My all-time favorite Sparks song...Amateur Hour encapsulates everything about a great Sparks song...eclectic style, great lyrics, and catchy as hell!
Brings back so many memories of nights of lost memories with the band I worked for back then. This made it onto the turntable every night.
2019 !!!!! f***** bright song .
THAT FELLA WITH THE HITLER MOUSTACHE SCARRF THE CRAP OUT OF ME
Brilliant
Ca 'riff'sec et dru!
...like The Blockheads, startlingly superior musicianship.
This song is a masterpiece
Only these guys would be able to put "Yehudi Menuen" in a rock song !
have your own dance troop to avoid lyrics
As addictive as hell, and clever too. A new discovery for me, but Sparks are the gift that keeps on giving.
God how I love Sparks
I still got my vinyl of this an other albums of Sparks. Funny, ironic and speedy rhytms
This record is all around everything related to Sparks.
listening tonight again and earlier today in afternoon car. Mammoth anthem.
oh! 💘
Pure Brilliance at its best !!!
autism hour goes on and on
HEY THAT IS OFFENSIVE
one of the greatest songs about adolescence and loss of virginity
The original Kimono my House line up....nothing can beat this.
Sympa💗🎶🎵🎶
こりゃいい曲💘
Sampled recently by scooter both great songs.
When she turns pro she lets you know of course ;-)

I love this, its like a goofy Rush!
Scooter - In Rave We Trust https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwGgBYI-Ku4
Who's here because of Scooter!?
I absolutely love this song so much!!!!!!
I'm a Chihuahua chicken goujon..... when you tickle your nose
アンコールえがった~~♪
Like Björk my best album in childhood!
What amateurs are disliking this video?!
Love it !!!
echos of DEATH IN VENICE by Visconti...SPARKS were likeable to be in LIDO with dirk Bogarde and Thomas Mann
What else!
Moving out of LA to London was the right move for these guys in 72/73. Check out Martin Gordon's band JET for some more Sparks influence. Fantastic album!
Funny that Queen used to open shows for Sparks..!!!! Then Queen just took off to another level of fame and popularity..!!! This album is just amazing, also recomend the No. 1 in Heaven is a gem..!!!
Way bettah than that Mercury fellah...
Brian May was asked to play with them before Queen.....i guess we all know what happened
@JANXDPDX We do ?
My favorite album cover from the 70's!!!!
Thanks Dallon for recording this to me :'))))
Lyrics are world class.
Guitar riff !!
hey I'm trying to find a song that I could have sworn was by Sparks, it's called "elastic man" or rubber band man or something like that
There's a song by The Fall called How I wrote Elastic Man but I doubt it's that you're thinking of?
Rubberbandman is performed by Yello.
<(/.○^-^○)> ,\|,,
Not many people know that Ron ( keyboards ) also wrote the lyrics as well as the music . Great song.
Everyone knows that.
Blimey! And here's me thinking that Martin Gordon wrote it all these years 😂😂😂 cheers Columbo.
I love their earlier works, but man it's so hard to make out those lyrics. Thanks for posting them.
This was the year when I lost my cherry - for want of a better term. Fantastic memories. Still 16 in my head, but abused body is knackered...
Happy memories,great time.
Your body is not a temple....it's a fun park. Enjoy it!
I came here because Björk's favorite album in her childhood was this... OMG.
Abiel Ticas I came here cos the song made me Cum
shame they went sort of disco shite! They were quite punky then! That's why I liked them!
Wasn't a disco album. Just disco producer georgio moroder. No.1 in heaven along with kimono is one of the most influential albums of all time.
Ron boxing hissel' on a screen a few years back in the O2 Gorbals. Easily one of my top 10 gigs. Trust me, that's a list.
love it . used to sing this at the top of my voice in the mid 70's
Seen Ron interviewed and he seems like a nice guy but in 1974 aged eight he scared the life out of me. He had a knack of staring down the camera straight at you with those piercing eyes. He's a marketing genius, once you saw him you never forgot him.
great one
brings back wonderful memories 7
Kimono my house is one of the greatest albums of all time ,its that good
Agreed!
good yes but for me Propaganda is far better, every track a gem
@Philip Lindsay I agree.
@Susan Leighton . A once in a life time experience.
@Urs Seiler they're still going. Their last album hippopotamus got to number 6 in the UK charts. ☺
Really top band !
Top song, great album.
Love it...
Fun album! Still have my original vinyl copy somewhere.
Quels souvenirs quand j'écoute ce fabuleux album! Je les avais vus en concert à l"'olympia, je devais avoir 14/15 ans . Ils m'avaient scotché, je m'en souviens comme si c'était hier... nostalgie
Fanbloodytastic☺☺☺☺☺
So choose your partners everyone; if you hesitate, the good ones are gone...and then its the ten to 2 dash! What a tremendous band these guys are.
I am looking forward to you playing this live in London in a few days time :)
I bought this single 39 years ago and NEVER worked out the lyric. Having just sat and read it through (not having heard it for about 30 years !!) it gives the song another dimension I never knew existed. Makes it more brilliant than it was. Fantastic. Thanks for the post :-)
this is just brilliant !!
Best ever sparks song is number one song in heaven it's so 1970's
So glad to buy the LP and see them live when I worked in Torquay 40 years ago.
I still have this LP. I wonder if its the stolen one that was put on ebay...j/k
this was the first Sparks album I ever heard when a friend let me borrow it. Then later when Pulling a Rabbit Out of Its Hat LP came out I thought how impressive how this band was still improving after putting so many albums out. Kimono My House LP was so original that I felt this is where it started separating itself from the rest.
I don't know why I love this song so much, but thank you TVTropes for enlightening me to it.
love the two models in the photo - wonder what became of them?
+Rentaghost 76 Yes, the one on the right that is winking? She did the Japanese language monologue on "It's No Game", which is the first song on Scary Monsters.
The one on the left is Russell Mael !
They eventually became "Bond Girls"!!!!!!
and if they didn´t die, then they still live today...
One of the top ten albums of all time, in my opinion, anyone who disagrees , hasn't really listened to it
Couldn't agree more absolutely innovative
One of the greatest and most influential albums of all time.
The whole album is full of brilliant , witty lyrics , eg, up here in heaven with out you, it is hell, knowing that your health, will keep you out of here, for many many years, Milliganesque
That's my favorite on Kimono! I don't think anything can beat that lyrics 😂😢😂😇
Every song on there is lyrically sublime. Amateur hour is lyrically one of the best songs I've ever heard.
lol proper lol - Can you believe how good this band have been? I still hum to myself Equator - I'll meet you there .....
なつかしくて、なみだがでそう。
Thank you.
1974 was a fab year for pop music.
late revenge ;-)
hahah literally laughed out loud
hershelmccoy - ha, your're right, completely ludicrous, but it works......
doylustheboy y
"It's a lot like playing the violin/
You cannot start off and be Yehudi Menuhin"
probably my favorite couplet in the entire sparks catalog
remembering hearing this on radio luxembourg chart late on a tuesday nite for the 1st time! fantastic song, class above the bubblegum pop of late 74 that was around same time!
i always liked their song "Cool Places" with Jane Weiden.
