This woman leaves me absolutely speechless and bewildered. I don't if she really even exists or not, or maybe she is jazz legend from the 1920's or 30's who has been reincarnated. All I know is that Esperanza Spalding is too great to be true, and she is also a dream come true, Hands Down!!!

because it has the feel of an older song i wondered about it, but every thing i've seen credits her as the composer. who wrote it if she didn't ?

i think this is one of 3-4 songs she's written that could be future standards. if she has a decently long career and stays at least this proficient, she'll have a songbook like some of the past greats.

But music isn't responsible for the war in iraq, the rise and fall of the economy, or even how well baseball tickets sell. These are all parts of a whole. Hell, if les paul hadn't invented the electric guitar there would be NO ROCK AND ROLL! (Rock and roll was like the daddy to most american music genres. Pop/Rap/etc

You know... I will agree with some things @geocool has to say. I don't think music shaped any culture. I think culture shapes music. The Big Band era died because of WW2. As polka and other european musicians traveled to america when it was first discovered, they brought thier talents that helped to for some of what American music will come to be. The History of the blues (which can be argued is one predecessor of jazz) is IN FACT started from field hollers during the days of slavery.

@JamesErvin100 @JamesErvin100 If u want I can write a whole essay for u about how jazz shaped america's society and culture. But u can do it on ur own..open a book once in a while, learn something. Miners strikes, civil wars, legislation ALSO shaped America. One country can't be shaped by only one thing. And I'm sure I'm not an idiot, u don't know shit about my education. The "2nd rate" uni is the 3rd best uni in student polls and top 12 for music. I even had American classmates, imagine that!

@JamesErvin100 AND if I remember correctly from the American Studies part of my degree, coz I also did courses on American studies from Americans who are from America and teach things about America, slavery was a huge part in shaping the American society and culture. Cuba was my dissertation topic and I wrote about the Nueva Trova music which influenced the world because it introduced (along with Nueva Trova from other latin American countries) the revolutionary song. JAZZ WAS INCLUDED.

@JamesErvin100 Vaudeville was the 1st type of entertainment in the US that combined theater, singing and dancing and it was jazz and swing!(you know something like opera if u ever heard about it). At my university which is in the top 12 for music in the UK we learned about european jazz too...i mean u most probably know that the origins of jazz come from the Africans who were slaves in America and in other countries in the world and brought their influence in music everywhere.

Or you could also read how jazz changed other countries, e.g. Cuba with nueva trova music. Yeah i don't go out..that's why I went 3000 miles away from my home to one of the best music universities in the UK to learn about it and get a degree. Maybe YOU should sit down and learn something about jazz.
