The problem with music videos is that, once you see it, it's difficult to hear the song and disassociate it from the video, which pretty much ruins this song for me because anytime I hear it I'll be visualizing a disturbing freak show.

I was 16 the summer this came out and those were great days to be a teenager. Life wasn't about selfies and instagram likes. It was about being with friends and having fun. Most of my friends dressed like hippies from 1960, like the blind melon video "no rain". There was so much great music being made, even bands like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd had a massive resurgence. I miss all my old friends and the child versions of ourselves we played back then. I always said the 90's were the 60's turned upside down.

I've always heard this song as someone going through a melancholy who is wishing they could just shut down and stop feeling. With the sun symbolizing warmth and safety (but also sometimes destruction by fire) a Black Hole Sun would be the warmth and safety of no longer having to feel the cold rain (tears).
Wanting a release from that cold depression even if the Black Hole Sun is destructive.
