the complex time signature work in this song is actually a really clever effect; It makes the emotional changes much harder to predict, complicating the overall memorization of the track, which yields higher replay value (every time you're kind of stabbing in the dark for the next chord change). key thing is that its beatless; if there was a beat it'd strangely juxtapose the rhythm of the chords/arps, immediately highlighting their odd time signatures thus making the whole thing a much more jarring listen.

@Ard s I think I know what you mean, but I wouldn't call the track beatless. It is hyper-metrically very regular, which is a part of why the two build-ups make you expect a drop that never comes (is that the drop of the protagonist into the water they are looking at??). I think what you are hearing is the layering over of the triplet interpretation of the measure (in the high synths), the four-four interpretation syncopated (of the lower synths), and the larger—metrically regular—bass and voice (with a microtiming effect distinguishing the voice). It is a rather complex kind of hemiolic situation, and, while you can attend to the different layers individually relatively easily, the whole effect is pretty remarkable. Both weightless and overwhelming at the same time.

@palms159 That 'beat decoded' thing does clarify the main beat, but doesn't really help clarify the complexities of the metric situation, hemiolic character, and grouping dissonances themselves. I could also definitely attend to other placements of the beat, but that video does have the main beat where I hear it in regular listening.
