Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, Beck, Blur are some of the best samples of 90s sounds and looks. But Sonic Youth, boy they're on different level for me.

When this album "Dirty" came out I was only 14. It totally blew my mind, so much that I listened to it almost every day for an entire summer. I saw they were coming in concert near my town and I went nuts. SY was the first band I saw in concert. What an amazing experience it was.

When I was in my sophomore year, discovering noise pop, skateboarding, any angst activity you can think of: I shaved my hair into a buzz cut. My inspiration was Mark Renton from Trainspotting but when I saw this music video; I was in love. With myself. Like a burst of self love and confidence rushed in me, I was like her, a punk cool cat that does whatever she wants even if it breaks social norms. Now that it's grown back to its long length, I cry inside knowing I can't shave it again. Mom's orders.

lol, I'm listening to The End of Days (motion picture) soundtrack. It was the first CD I ever bought. I was probably 8 years old. This is the only song I still listen to from that album. Timeless music.

The first 15 seconds embodies the sound of Sonic Youth. That riff screams everything SY and it’s their signature.

03:40 The way they intentionally screw up this one chord in the progression, and how it makes it all much more nervous and exciting. Genius at work.

You want it to resolve, but it doesn't. Or at least not how you thought you wanted it to.

But in the end, you're better for it.


To me, that perfectly describes the essence of Sonic Youth.

I bought a music magazine in the 90's about Nirvana and learned about Sonic Youth. I was a teen and a twenty something back then. The music was cooler back then and I could get a pack of generic cigarettes for eight-nine cents. A woman I know said she could not believe I listened to this stuff. She said she could not believe I was ever young. I even had a skateboard. I conclude Sonic Youth was the 90's Velvet Underground. Sonic Youth even had their own blonde eye candy too. I am going to listen to Nico right now. Peace.

I remember this from when I was a teenager. Funny I listen to Sonic Youth still and Nirvana went by the wayside a long time ago. I am still haunted by Kurt Cobain though. I like the 90's. It was a period of discovery for me. I survived. Yeah!!!!!!

being a teenager in the 90s was fun..this gave me goosebumps its been so long..back when people actually hung out,played guitars,went to shows and lit garbage dumpsters on fire while waiting in the bush for cops to show up..actual fun,no stupid cell phones,no internet,the only drugs around was good weed and the occasional chunk of hash,a smoking section in a coffee shop and everyone seemed more creative...anybody remember that?

I remember this time. Travelling from Germany to Netherlands' coffee shops. Lots of fun. Iron Curtain hitten down. A time of creativeness and freedom.
As you say...internet is all around us now. No time anymore. No real creativity.

That's because you've gotten old. Teenagers today still do that stuff, just your reaction to it will be 'get off my lawn' rather than encouragement
