Sonic Youth - Mote Lyrics

[Lee]
When you see the spiral turning through alone
And you feel so heavy that you just can't stop it
When this sea of madness turns you into stone
Picture of your life shoots like a rocket
All the time

Put 'me' in the equation it's alright
I've seen you moving in and out of sight
My friends tell me it's all cut through you (?)
From nowhere - to nowhere
Cut together - cutting through

I'm island-bound, a mote inside my eye
I can't see you breathing as before
I am airless - a vacuum child
I can't stand to reason at your door
In this time

Put 'me' in the equation it's alright
I've seen you moving in and out of sight
My friends tell me it's all cut through you (?)
From nowhere - to nowhere
Come together

I'm down in the daytime out of sight
Comin' in from dreamland I'm on fire
I can see it's all been here before
Dream a dream that lies right at your door

When the seasons circle sideways out of turn
And words don't speak just fall across the carpet
You're just in time to watch the fires burn
It seems a crime but yr. face is bright you love it
All the time...

Sonic Youth Mote Comments

I don't know how many ways I can put this. The information age DOES NOT EXIST. If you count the worthwhile contributions to the printed word since the dawn of radio and film, there is NO INFORMATION AGE TO ANY VALIDITY. Most of the worthwhile contributions are re-hash of the prior with banal scientific addition. They are fiefs to the Council of Lyons, and forever smiths to unseen Greek arguments! I decree, temporarily, the fall of the Holy Roman Empire due to an increase in crop availability, the introduction of pre-Christian information due to the invention of the printing press, the rise of Napoleon, and civil outbursts due to the inventive nature of many, thus not in the nature of blame or criminal pursuit, but due to circumstance beyond the general control. Other than that, it's all a blur of unmatched opinion and weak testimony...they are the assarting ritters non-caveat in a wave of free will and chaos!

I had depression in high school 1992 ( like most other kids) and use to put this on to max the shit out of my depression- it would get so dark it would become more of a natural high...it was a strange ride.

Not the easiest music to like, but those guitars are otherworldly.

  15. Structure

Great song but holy crap is it miserable. It's like Skinny Puppy miserable.

  16. SummerOfGeorge

I love sonic youth since a decade and listened to this song many times before, but it just hit me harder than ever before. Always thought this song was kinda cool, nothing more. This now was an experience on a spiritual level 😄 amazing how a band can do that with you.

  17. Zachary Smith

  20. Et Fées Mère

    Oh love this

  21. Marty Cray

Love seeing the Lee Ranaldo love fest in these comments. Definitely agree it's a shame he didn't get more songs, especially during the 90s era. Seemed like he got way more songs in the 80s. Would be a shame if Kim and Thurston refused to let him have more songs on the albums. But regardless, it's undeniable that his songs always stood out.

  22. Will McDaniel

I love Kim Gordon and Lee’s voice the best

  26. sonofbra

This song happens to blend melodic soothing vocals and a punk riff progression in a strange marriage, and it works so well. Throw in the noise and it is unbelievable.

  27. Rodrigo Lobo

    Muito bom!

  28. rensq

    thank you.

  29. Ramon Kalkschneider

That´ll always be my song for skateboarding (Someone had Toy Machine´s "Jump Off a Building" & the first 3 mins of that song were in Ed Templeton´s part. Around 1998.).

  51. Paul Murphy

I fucking Love Sonic Youth! And always will, The alternative Beatles! They should never be forgotten

  52. Postmortem Ritual

Get this picture : in my room trying to follow the bass line using an acoustic guitar with an small speaker taped to it , speaker from broken boombox, the speaker connected to the playhead entrance of the same boombox ( yeah I quit the head and use that input to connect the wires of the speaker, so you have a kind of saturated / distorted) sound. Primitive poor bastard with a bit of imaginatioin. I hated the acoustic guitar, so I needed electricity. Hahaha.
Sonic Youth, some nirvana and other bands all in k7s.
I was 14, my teen years, in total pleasure and extasis by discovering the magic of the noise of music. Not the music itself, just the noise. How I can express what Sonic Youth means to me? I have no words 'cause Its beyond words.

  60. Animal Mother

I first heard this song on Toy Machine's Jump Off A Building skate video when I was ten or eleven. I think it played over Ed Templeton's scene. It's the reason I got into Sonic Youth years later and is still one of my favorites. Lee has some bangers, I love Wish Fulfillment and Karen Revisited.

Everybody is talking about Lee's voice, and I agree, but J's voice is also super cool (I am speaking about J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr., he is on backvocals, you can hear him very well in the beginning of the third verse at 2:20)
Overall, very good song, love it!

    Pete Shylenko

I knew this one has something in common with Little Fury Things! I can't even think of two other songs that I like this much

Lee Ranaldo is my favorite beatle

    monsieur boeuf de tête

    yoko broke sonic youth!

    Johnny Trash

@monsieur boeuf de tête You can not be serious? japan is not new york. and the beatles don't have a catalogue of such great influence as sonic you do. i grew up listening to the Beatles but they would not be in my top one hundred. the best music has come out of the US for such a long time. punk and no wave started here. John lennon had a few songs that are considered influential, but for me the beatles were a cash spinner, quite dull frankly

    monsieur boeuf de tête

calm down and take your meds, kid. it was a joke. ask you mom about one - she can tell you about your dad.

    Evan Stanley

@monsieur boeuf de tête Johnny Trash is my favorite beatle
