Sonic Youth - Death Valley '69 Lyrics

[Thurston]

Groooooahhh!

You're right

You're right

And now in the canyon
Out in the yonder
She started to holler

So I had to hit it

I got sand in my mouth
And you got sun in your eyes
Blind
And you wanted to get there
But I couldn't go faster

So I started to hit it
So I started to hit it
I started to hit it

[both]

Coming down
Sadie, I love it
Now now now
Death valley '69

You're right
You're right
You're right

I was on the wrong track
We're deep in the valley
How deep in the gulley

She started to holler
I didn't wanna
I didn't wanna
I didn't wanna
I didn't wanna
But she started to holler

Hit it
Hit it
Hit it
Deep in the valley
In the trunk of an old car
In the back of a chevvy

But you couldn't go faster

Hit it
Hit it
Hit it
Hit it
Hit it
Hit it
Hit it
Hit it

Coming down
Sadie, I love it
Now now now
Death valley '69
Death valley '69
Death valley '69
Death valley '69

[Lydia Lunch]

You were right

And now in the canyon
Way out in the yonder

You got sand in your mouth
I got sun in your eyes
Blinded

I wanted to get there

You couldn't go faster

Hit it

Ieieieioooooaoaoaieeih!

@Flinchey Then it just got *even better*

It’s about nothing. Or maybe something erotic. Nothing Manson-y in the lyrics except a mention of a Sadie (Manson Family member) but nothing about murder...

The video for this gives the impression it's about the Tate / La Bianca murders, the band all appear in a mockup of the Tate murder scene.

The song is about the Manson Murders. For a time in 1969 the Manson Family lived in Death Valley, CA. Kim Gordon, Sonic Youth member, stated explicitly that this song was about Manson. See the book Our Band Could Be Your Life by Michael Azzerrad

Can you imagine how cool this was in the 80's? Lung Leg was a star.

    Chris Francz

I remember hearing this song for the first time in early 1986 on a late night punk rock radio show in East Stroudsburg, PA. (WESS 90.3 FM Rat's Alley hosted by Dave MacLaughlin). It still creeps me out. Read the book, Helter Skelter about the Manson Family murders. This album is a concept album based on those events in 1969.

    Michael Szymanski

Chris Francz Read it. I totally get them. Richard Kern was the master. I bought 2 movies from him and I still have the canceled check he signed in pencil.

    Sri Kumar

I had this vinyl in 1985, I was thirteen. I still have no idea who exactly Lung Leg was, so I have to dispute your claim. Also, this is Lydia Lunch on vocals. Lung Leg was the cover model for EVOL. But was that an alias of Lydia Lunch? I don't know, maybe you do. Lydia Lunch wasn't really a star either, nobody knew who she was either. That's the truth.

    MrBardoTube

@Sri Kumar lung leg appear in the video but she's another person

  8. Ian-John Coughlan

I get a very Virgin Prunes vibe from this track. A little 'Caucasian Walk'.
