Sonata Arctica - Closer To An Animal Lyrics

I am a man
You fell down from that apple tree
The other day with me

We had already forgotten
We one day crawled up
From the sea

Imagine now
If we one day could build
A flying contraption and see the world

What if we could somehow
Store knowledge in a cloud
Draw a smiling face on the moon
Find the meaning of life

Riding the crest of our time
With bravado, soon complete
Will we see a new one rise behind us
A new chance, a new world

Our wave
It's about to break
And we're about to dive in the void
It echoes our fall
Our paean to avarice

I think we're closer to an animal
Every day, till we fall...

Can you believe
We have all those eyes high in the sky
And we can now see the world

One thing truly makes me blind
The wisdom of hindsight
The eye in my own hand

Riding the crest of our time
With bravado, soon complete
Will we see a new one rise behind us
A new chance, a new world

I think I'm closer to an animal
Every day, till I fall...

If you want it all
You can have it all
But greed raises oceans too

When the glacier of
Our broken dreams
Melts in your champagne glass

Someone knocks on your door
Four times...
Sand in your hour glass

Every grain is a day falling
Finding it's rightful place

If you want it all
You can have it all
But greed raises oceans too

When the glacier of
Your broken dreams
Melts in your champagne glass

Do we need it all
We can have it all
Our greed will raise oceans soon

And the glacier of
Our human dream
Gone with the champagne glass
In the sea

"I am a man
In the grand scheme of things
Only minutes have passed
Since I crawled up from the sea
But already
I've built a flying contraption
And seen the world
I've drawn a smiley face on the moon
And stored knowledge in a cloud
...What a wonderful gift our mind is
But why am I using it
To destroy this beautiful planet...
My only home
If it defines me, if it makes me a human
I need to get closer to my inner animal"

  5. R.... M....

    Where is the button "Epic"?

  6. I.... G....

    I really like this track

  7. C.... N....

I can't find other bands like Sonata Arctica. Everybody talks about their early releases, but I think Pariah and this one are their top! I get bored of all those double bass hyper-speed power metal albums, I prefer this mid paced tempo with great melody, great arrangements and superb vocals!

  8. A.... C....

This song is about hegelian dialects, and nobody can change my mind about it.

  9. S.... ....

I'm here just to leave a positive comment: i love this song and the ninth hour album. Sonata Arctica never disappoints me

  10. .... ....

The problem with the song is that it's sang with a weakass voice. From 1:08 to 1:44 and 2:27 to 3:05 are sang like Tony has no heart or feelings.

  11. c.... f....

    叙情的でとてもメロディアスな素晴らしい曲だー!!
    デビュー当時からのファンだけどこの路線も悪くない

  12. S.... S....

SonataArctica mellowed out ,I want to go to sleep,

  13. T.... O....

Why do I feel a Perfect Circle vibe? Am I the only one? Its subtle

  14. 0.... ....

Anybody else feel as though tony didn't have the passion in this album as he has had in the past?

  15. C.... B....

I'm wondering this every single day. And every single day I love Sonata Arctica more

  16. a.... ....

just found this song, and I'm not a Sonata Arctica fan, I've listened to 2 of their songs so far. But this is a really good, catchy song, I don't really understand the hatred towards it.

  17. m.... ....

    I love this song.

  18. D.... M....

you guys say what you want. but this is my favorite (and ive listened to (about) all of their songs) song by sonata arctica. and I feel that, for me, its their best lyrics and music and most powerful message theyve ever written about. I argue that, the song is NOT whatsoever THE best song of Sonata arctica, but that, “real” Sonata arctica or not, it is musically among their prime nonetheless while, to many chagrins, in that service it is blindingly mistook.
I dont understand what some people are complaining about in terms of its music. its boring?... bland? do you not hear the passion? and if you do hear it...is passion bland? the bridge.. do you not hear the spinechilling mixing of instruments there? no? am I just muscially deaf? power metal is not only fast strumming with A E G G • A E G G • G F E D C | it is an art that SA definitely as a band travels beyond throughout their career. expression is not tied to and influenced by a genre. genre is tied to and influened by expression.
alot of people here are also saying it takes more than one listen to truly get to like it. am I the only one who listened to it ONE time and who, afterwards, liked it immediately? I also was listenigg to it with low, bad sound and couldnt hear it in all its musical grandness. no headphones, etc. just my phone up to my ear. In fact, it was the first and only time so far that I immediately SMACK FIRST enjoyed a SA song 100% and with no negative belief that it was bland, boring, or any thing of the sort.
To make it more like fact and not opinion, in consideration of my two points above, I am no ordinary music listener. I listen to a range of music. good enough music. ones you can listen to without having to question if its music or not within the first 40 seconds. I make music. I write music. I write lyrics to them. and i even listen to music sometimes solely to study/focus on the musical arrangment in execution for a particular song. I can analyze music and pick out each instrument/noise’s function in the music. and compare and contrast it to the meaning. jazz is the primary teacher for creativity: it dictates that beauty CAN be generated from chaos.
do I, still, seem off my rocker in my argument, my argument which contends, not that closer to an animal IS in fact their best song, but that it truly carries a strikingly superb substance that is only acknowledgeable to those capable of withdrawing it? Or am I just a boasting blabberer? The answer to such a “subjective Vs objective” question only serves that person who actively seeks an answer. What is music? Does it need to take 4 tries, 100 tries?, before complete listening ecstacy to the ears? does one listening time with a slap in the face that it is great constitute the “best” song?
sometimes I force myself to like a song. with closer to an animal, I did not force it. Both ways constitute that music is subjective. Objective, however, resides in the collective consiousness. use your mind, soul, when you hear a song. instead of your actual brain, or mouth. this is not the “old” sonata arctica? do you expect life to stay the same? You miss the old times, dont you? You PREFER ancient pasts? well, take a step to the side where all the chaos occurs. and find where the creative abilities shine with different brightnesses and strengths. thats what music is. life is music.

  19. A.... v....

Sonata Arctica is not just music , it is poetry.

  20. S.... M....

I 'll always wait the old Unia Days.... i like this band but... naah... most of their new songs aren't intresting even to finish listening them for me :/

  21. S.... P....

this song is about human being self conciousness and lack of ability to be themselves. we mold ourselves to fit in. and survive.

"you fell down from the apple tree"
adam and eve. they became selfaware after biting the apple. no longer able to be ourselves (be in paradise)

true humans are animals. or at leas people who are themselves. "every day til i fall". yeah being self conscious and not acting on instincts keeps us alive, but at what cost? we walk around like zombies.

  22. J.... A....

I don't like comparing a band's older songs to their new ones. I just love this, and I love the 'classics' as well. The band has clearly changed during the last years, which, in my opinion, doesn't keep them from being great. Well, yeah, you can argue about the production of this song, the sound itself is probably better live.

  23. T.... ....

Am I the only one who thinks this song is pretty epic? I'm in love.

  24. M.... ....

I was hoping that after Pariah we would see a great album, but this just feels like an hour of Tony whining

  25. t.... ....

Before there was autotune, there was Tony Kakko

  26. H.... ....

I hate this album. Sonata Arctica made profound songs that had catchy tunes and deep, dark meanings that really made us shivery. These songs are nice... but they're not Sonata Arctica.

  27. V.... C....

This is a good song, I like the message. Sonata Arctica is still a great band, I mostly like them for their melody and lyrics and most of all is because they sing about something, unlike many American songs. Now before the Roast, I know that not all American songs are like that, there are many good ones, but many recent popular songs sing about nothing, no real or interesting topic, im sure u can think of a few like that.

Also for people criticizing the band from changing, yes they have changed from their 1st Album back in 1999, they are artists they need to try new things, but most of all they also have to mature its been 18 years (man, I'm getting old) since that album im sure many don't like the same thing they did 18 years ago. Plus if they didn't change and were still the same, im sure people be criticizing that its more of the same crap and such.

  28. A.... ....

This is as epic as The Power of One

  29. P.... C....

Sinceramente me da igual si Sonata Arctica cambio, aún escuchó su música, al igual que la nueva y la antigua y sigue siendo muy buena.

    P.... C....

Por fin, alguien que si es un verdadero fan de sonata

  30. T.... O....

I only wish this was one of many

  31. J.... S....

This is such a good Song!

  32. S.... ....

kakko killed an amazing band, fuck that dick.
    RIP Sonata Arctica 1995 - 2007
Flag in the ground was an AMAZZZZING TRACK!!! so freaking great!! In my eyes you're a giant was awesome as well!! gosh even The Wolves Die Young was way better than this crap!!!! why can't we have amazing tracks like those instead of this Kakko's mental break down?!! GET THE FUCK OVER IT already gooosh!

  33. k.... ....

Sounds so much better live. This is so tinny. No oomph, no depth.

  34. E.... P....

    This is great.

  35. V.... u....

    Is this metal?..

  36. S.... ....

Best album in my opinion is Winterheart's Guild and the worst is Stones Grow Her Name.

  37. S.... ....

I've been a fan of Sonata Arctica since 2006 and I love the new album, so there. I also like songs about saving the planet so that's why I love it I guess :)

  38. K.... v....

I like this song so much, you can't describe it with words. So Don't Say a Word!!!

  39. N.... U....

    No solo.. bye

  40. j.... ....

    Very Nice,..

  41. S.... S....

    Meaningful lyrics.

  42. K.... ....

I love the song but it's too damn LOUD!

  43. N.... O....

Why so much hate toward this song? One of their best songs...

  44. G.... ....

Do these guys ever rhyme or have a sense of rhythm? So far their best song is probably San Sebastian

  45. R.... B....

🤘 Sonata Arctica 🤘 1 of the most underrated bands, but stil 1 of my favorite bands !

  46. T.... M....

SA are fantastic musicians and singer is awesome. I like how they added pop feeling in their compositions which make them unique.

  47. R.... I....

00:09. What kind of editing is that? they hired an engineer or a dj?

  48. V.... ....

The desperate need for conservation of our precious planet. Such a beautiful, powerful, and grim message. Between this song and Wildfire, Part: III - Wildfire, Town, Population: 0, they've masterfully hit it home yet again.

  49. a.... ....

I'm curious though.. what is the spoken words from. Is it a quotation?

  50. B.... B....

god damn i love this song

reminds me of stuff on Unia

fuckkkkkkkkk that chorus is so cool! and the monologue at the end is awesome!

  51. N.... H....

I like the song, but the sound is strange... I mean, drums and keyboard sound louder than Tony's voice.

  52. Z.... M....

Jsou stále perfektní. Hudba jiný a přesto stejný. Je to jen Sonata Arctica.

  53. A.... F....

Judging from the views I believe they are a very good band.

  54. C.... S....

The fanbase growing up with Sonata Arctica over years used to accept the way they try to make us thinking about our human beeing in this world. It will be a important milestone for this band. If we keep thinking about their Lyrics for us all.

  55. M.... F....

    LinkinPark pls...

I hope this isn't your best song on your new album

  56. V.... U....

Say what you will, but the monologue at the end.. MM. When it starts... "I am a man." Just. Wow. Loved it.

  57. Y.... G....

I just think of les miserable when listening to the vocals

  58. R.... G....

I'm in love with their beautiful melodies...

  59. M.... E....

We are an animal, but we also have the potential to rise to something greater together and united we will stand.

We just need to stop the virus of evil that spread among us and build a better world. It it is possible and we can find the cure together even if it may hurt along the way.

The cure is suffering as it open our minds up. We need to not fear little pain, but embrace in it to a degree.

  60. C.... H....

I really wish this band would return to the sound they had on Silence. That was a great album.

  61. E.... G....

me encantó muy muy buena canción puedo decir que la amo

  62. t.... ....

Sonata Boringtica..........i was fcuking dissapointed with this album

  63. B.... O....

I don't really like ... Elias is playing some easy simple shit here, he can do more, even Tony :(

  64. i.... f....

    wow daddy

  65. T.... B....

I have never heard sonata artica but I see a bunch of people complaining that this isn't like the old them. I personally love this song but I would understand.

    T.... B....

I mean it's not BAD, but when you listen to an album like Reckoning Night you can understand why a lot of fans are tired of their newer songs.

  66. L.... N....

You know, I just LOVE how people keep dictating what is good and what isn't based on their opinions. Instead of saying "I don't like it" they say "it's bad" without anything to support i just because they didn't like it. I don't like classical music, but I'd never say it's bad.

  67. E.... S....

faltou foi solo. até agora estou achando esse álbum fraco

  68. R.... W....

    Great Lyrics. And so true...

  69. L.... L....

3:09 and the melody really comes alive!
The whole melody feels so very familiar somehow.. :3

  70. M.... ....

I really like it, but am I the only one who was expecting a heavier song when hearing the intro?

  71. I.... S....

    muy bueno

  72. M.... ....

lol this song is so much better when you choose speed 1.25 xD

  73. M.... T....

The New Sonata Is So effing Boring!!!!!!!!!

  74. R.... A....

Great song, 100% agree with you

  75. M.... ....

Really how SA have made the power-prog sound their own! While tony includes some great messages about society

  76. 0.... ....

Sounds good except for the drums which sound like a poorly mixed flat mess.

  77. I.... I....

First time I listened this song, I didn't like, but now, I cant's stop listening again and again and again...

  78. J.... L....

  79. H.... ....

The worst thing in this vid is the lack of sync between the song and the lyrics but nice style ^^

  80. s.... ....

I think it's almost ideal song in this style! Great work!

  81. P.... H....

"What a piece of crap!" I thought the first time I heard this. However, the song has grown after a few listens and especially the spoken part in the end, no matter how cheesy, actually has some emotional effect on me. Everyone should stop and think about these things every once in a while.

  82. D.... l....

They have lost all the power

  83. d.... ....

As weird as it is, this is turning out to being my favourite track on the new album. It's basic power metal in it's core but hell so catchy, countless times I've found myself just humming this tune and thinking out the lyrics "aloud". Ultimately a catchy song. I still want to give credits to both Fairytale and BPWO pt2, but it's given how "short" track this is and not meant to be the "Epic" of the album, it's so, so surprisingly good, after all.

  84. C.... G....

This and Wildfire pt III. Damn.

  85. j.... 2....

The last album I find it bad, the songs are not strong, the verses are weak, the guitars do not stand out. I think they should find another producer, someone who takes your comfort zone and back to being the band that were or better.
    I'm a fan :)

  86. S.... ....

Someone needs to make Sonata Arctica great again! >:(

  87. M.... U....

THE NINTH HOUR - the worst album I've heard for 10 years, I'm sorry

  88. D.... A....

I actually really like this album and I hated the last 2, so that feels like a big thing for me. This song however is one of the few i didn't like. They should have promoted with "Rise A Night".

  89. N.... R....

Is this entire album mixed this poorly? It's pathetic.

  90. C.... L....

There's a big difference between NOT GREAT and HORRIBLE. I find "Closer to an animal" pretty good, instrumentally and harmonically speaking. It lacks something, this I can agree with. But I also feel people are always very negative about new releases, specially when step toward a new direction. Like some guys said here, there were a bunch of crazy folks that would point the finger to Reckoning Night, which is (in my humble opinion) the best release of melodic metal in, let's say, 10 years maybe.

Back to this new thing, well... Sounds ok. It's definitetly worse than Pariah's Child, that I like very much (not their best thing ever, but still pretty nice). Stones wasn't that good and Days are their worst album, I think. Considering their own SONATA ARCTICA SCALE OF QUALITY, this is what, 7/10? Can't ask for 9s or 10s everytime... At least this is how I feel.

  91. O.... T....

I have a copy of the Japanese import on the way, but this song just doesn't work for me. "Life" is much better in my opinion. I'm sure there'll be more songs on the album I like though.

  92. D.... ....

    FANTASTiC

  93. T.... ....

disappointing, this song is just boring and bland. what happened to old SA?

  94. M.... S....

I'm noticing a theme between some newer songs of protecting the earth. It makes me wonder what affect I have, and how my life will change the planet. for better or for worse, we'll find out

  95. L.... 4....

    I loved it

  96. W.... L....

This is probably the weakest song of the album, the rest is almost back to the roots.
